I This invention relates to chip deflectors for skiving machines and is herein illustrated as embodied in a skiving machine of theAmazeen type.
1n machines of this general type the work is fed by a cooperating feed disk and feed roll beneath a pr'esser-foot, which holds the work on theroll, to a rotary disk knife. The finished work passes under the knife while the waste skivings or chips pass over it. These chips have a tendency to curl back over the presser-foot in such manner that their free ends, are liable to be carried beneath the presser-foot and thus to be fed forward with the work. WVhen this occurs, the work is not pressed uniformly against the roll with the result that the work is liable to be damaged by the knife.
According to the present invention, novel and improved means are provided for preventing such curling back of the chips. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention a chip deflector having a stem adapted to be fastened to a bearing of the feed disk shaft has an operative portion extending above the presser-foot in position to intercept and deflect such of the chips as tend to curl back over the presser-foot. And in-' asmuch as it is desirable that the operators view shall not be obstructed, the deflector comprises, in the illustrated embodiment of the invention, a frame by which a piece of transparent sheet material is carried. 7
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, the figure shows in perspective a portion of an Amazeen skiving machine equipped with a chip deflector according to the invention, a piece of work being shown in process of being skived.
The machine comprises a rotary disk knife 1 to which the work is fed by a rotary roll 3 and a cooperating rotary feed disk 5, said disk being carried at the lower end of a shaft whichis rotatably mounted in r aligned bearings 7,- 9 which are rigid with the frame of the machine; and, in order to press the work firmly against the roll, there is provided a presser-foot 11, the stem of which is adjustably held by aplate 13 pivoted at 15 to a stationary member 17, the plate being held in the position shown by a thumb nut 19, threaded upon the free end of a bolt which is pivoted to the member 17 and extends between two lugs, one of which is shown at 21, on the plate 13. When the thumb nut has been loosened and-the pivoted bolt swung up from between the lugs, the plate 13, and with it the presser-foot, may be swung awayfrom the knife into inoperative position for replacement or repair. The con:. struction thus briefly ,indicated is substantiall the same as that shown and described in nited States Letters Patent No. 1,180,- 222, granted April 18, 1916, upon an application filedin the name of Alexander to which reference is made for a detailed description. It will be understood that, as the work (commonly upper leather) is fedthroughi the machine by the combinedaction of the rotary disk 5 and roll 3 to the rotary knife 1, the
margin of the work is beveled by removing from said margin a skiving 200 which is sub stantially triangular in cross-section, the
finished work passing under the knife and the skiving passing over the knife.
It is essential to the proper operation of the machine that the Work should be pressed down uniformly upon the roll in the locality of the cutting edge of the knife, this being the function of the presser-foot 11. pe ns frequently, however, that a chip or skivlng curls back over the Presser-foot in such manner and to such extent that the free end of the skiving is caught beneath the Presser-foot and fed forward with the work. The extra thickness thus present beneath the presser-foot renders it impossible for the foot to exert the desired uniform pressureupon the work with the result that the work is liable to be cut unevenly, the knife frequently making an unsightly gouge III the Work under these conditions,
In order to prevent such undesirable occurrences, there is provided a chip deflector the major portion of Which comprises a rectangular shield in the form of a frame 23 having mounted therein a piece of transparent sheet material 25, such as celluloid, said frame extending above the presser-foot in position to intercept such chips as tend to curl back over the presser-foot and prevent them from curling back far enough to be caught beneath said foot. In order to hold the deflector firmly in place, it is provided with a stem 27 having a portion curved to fit over the cylindrical bearing 9 of the feed disk shaft, a thumb-screw 29.and a suitably shaped washer 30 serving to fasten the stem to the bearing.

It should be noted, too, that the deflector is entirely independent of the 'pres'ser-foot and that consequently said foot may be adjusted or swung toinoperative position at any time Without disturbing the chip deflector.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. For a skiving machine having a rotary knife, a feed roll and a feed disk for ad v'ancing the Work to the knife, a presserfoot for holding the Work on the roll, a rotary shaft upon which the feed disk is mounted and a bearing for said shaft, a
