HAND ROLLER Filed NOV. 12, 1925 %u m, W
Patented Aug. 2, 1927.
UNITED STATES] PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK H. MARTIN, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE 13.1. 'GOODRICH COM- PANY, OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
HAND ROLLER.
Application filed November This invention relates to hand-rollers suitable for pressing tacky sheets of material the device to the hand.
as in the building of rubber footwear, where ni'imerous brief rolling operations are alternated with stock-manipulating operations requiring the use. of the fingers. 'I-Ieretofore, so far as I am aware, the practice has been to employ a hand-roller provided with a handle requiring to be grasped by the hand and consequently the frequent laying aside of the roller topermit the fingers to be employed in stock-manipulating operations. a I
My general object is to provide an im: proved hand-roller adapted 'for rapid work.
Further objects are to avoid weariness and discomfort of the operator by providing a roller by which strong pressure may be applied without great muscular exertion, and
particularly of thefingers. a
, Of the accompanying drawings: a I Fig. 1 1s a perspective view 0t a'handroller embodying my invention, together withthe work and the hand of the operator.
Fig. Qis a perspective view of the operators hand, inverted; with the roller .at-
tached thereto. 7
Referring to the drawings, the device comprises a roller mounting or 1 plate -10,'
preferably of metal, which is shaped tofit the palm of the hand, having'a substantially that portion 1O relatively near the fingers and a curved abutment or driving portion 10'? adapted to be engaged firmly by the nearer the wrist, to impel" base ofthe hand, the roller forward. r I I The plate is formedwitli an eye 11 at each end of the flat portion 10 for a strap 12 adapted to pass over the back of the hand and provided with a. buckle 13 forsecnring The plate is formed near its center with sections oftlie metal as shown.

a pairof ears 14:, 14 standing out from the palm of the hand, which may be provided by die-stamping and bending up triangular Between these cars 14 apresser roll 15 is journaled on an axle 16 mounted in the ears.
cupped to maintain a firm bearing against v the plate 10, and thus the device is passed over the work, 17, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
. The fingers and thumb are free, and may be employed for manipulation of the stock without laying aside the roller.
Tiring of thefingers is avoided since they are not required to grasp the device, and the position of the device in the hand, close to the wrist. is such that heavy pressure may be applied to the work without great strain upon any part of the hand. The roll 15 being journal-ed nearthe center of the plate and close ,to the hand gives stability in use,
so that the pressure against the work does not tend to displace the device on the hand. i The device may be modified in details of construction without departure from the? scope of my invention as claimed.
A hand roller comprising a roller-mounting having' a substantially fiat face adapted to fit the palm of the hand, and an abutment face curved out of the plane of said flat face and adapted to be'engaged by the portion of the hand nearer the wrist, means for securing said mount-ing to the hand, and a presser roll journaled on said mounting near the center thereof.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this-5th day of November, 1925.
