Description

1,635,969 y 12 1927' J. F. WINKLER INFLATABLE To:
Original Filed April 11. 1924 Patented July 12, 1927.
UNITED STATES 1,635,969 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. WINKLEB, OI PAINESVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE WOOBTEB RUBBER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
INFLATABLE TOY.
Application filed April 11, 1924, Serial No. 706,085. Renewed Kay 25, 1827.
My invention relates to inflatable toys, and particularly to such as are constructed of elastic rubber, and includes the method of constructing such toys, and its principal objccts are first, to construct toy objects, such as dolls and the like, by the inflation of an elastic substance in more or less grotesque form, and, second, to provide novel means for supporting the structure automatically in a variety of attitudes and (positions, in grotesque forms of objects, an in a novel method of producing such forms and causing them to stand erect, and for preventing deflation of the several parts after their inflation.
It consists of the novel combination of parts and method of producing the same in such grotesque formation of toy creatures by the inflation of rubber or the like, as may be desired, as hereinafter set forth and stated in the a pended claims.
My invention is ilustrated by the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an inflated toy embodying my invention in one form of construction, ready for use. Fig. 2 shows the toy in the initial stage of production; Fig. 3 illustrates the next movement in its formation; Fig. 4 shows the toy in process of completion. Fig. 5, is a detail plan. view of the supporting means for the inflated structure, and Fig. 6 is a side sectional view of such supporting means, cut apart for better illustration of the means for securing the body in erect position and preventing its deflation, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of a collar or neck-band such as I use in constructin and shaping and re tainin the head of t e toy independently of the b0 y thereof.
In the drawings, A is the head, B, the neck, and C, the body portion of the toy. D is the supporting member of the toy to which the body is removably secured as follows- The supporting member -D, which, in the present and preferred form, comprises a pair ofwooden shoes united to ether a short distance apart as shown at a in- Fi 5 and 6; after inflation the lower end 0 the body portion is drawn out, as at E, until long enough to pass around underneath the connection G, as at H, thru the slot E, andthence is drawn upward thru the oppositeslot F, as shown at F in Fig. 6 w 10b is the ribbed terminus of the body, such as is usually formed in the construction of mv and thru the slot E (Fig. 9
flated balloons and the like, secured u on the shoes D as aforesaid. In order to ormsthe head A independently of the body C the original deflated material is drawn part way thru the wooden or hard rubber or the like neck band B, as shown in Fig. 2, and the head portion is inflated by blowing air thru the body portion 0 while the latter is held b the hand L to prevent its inflation until t e head is formed above the collar B, when 'the head is twisted around a couple of times by the hand M to prevent its deflation. The hand N, Fi 4, holds the head and neck in position wh' e the body portion G is inflated, and then the lower end of the body is held together to prevent its deflation while it is drawn out 5), and under-' neath the connecting link and thence thru the slot F, leaving its ribbed end F fast therein, as shown in Fig. 6 as aforesaid, and
ihereppon the toy is completed, as shown in The wooden shoes D with their turned up toes, when fastened to the body portion as aforesaid, causes the latter to take a standing position automatically.
am aware it is not new ures with similar means standing attitude automatically, and such I do not broadly claim. Other forms of feet for the toy may be employed for the same purpose, and the different members of. the toy may be enlarged or diminished relatively as may be desired. The different members may be ornamented with displays of any desired appearance to suit the taste, and t e shoes and neck-band may be of any suitable material for the purpose, and the head and body of any sultable elastic material.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A toy device of the character described, comprising, in combination, head and body members of elastic material in one piece a circular band adjustable longitudinally etween said members to limit their respective diameters, said body member tapering downwardly and terminating with an orifice, and a pair of supporting members spaced apart to form a slot adapted to engage and hold said tapered lower end when drawn therein, substantially as set forth.
and is thereby to construct figfor assuming a lower end; means, including a neck-band adjustable between said mein ers, for inflating the head member independently of the body member, and means for supporting the body, comprising foot members having a slot therein adapted to engage and enclose thelower end of said body member when stretched out and drawn therein after inflation of said member, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand this 5th day of April, A. D. 1924.
JOHN F. VVINKLER.
