One form which 'my invention may take is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a side elevational view, showing, a portion of a two-body unit constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a view showingthe remaining portionofrsaid unit; F ig. 3 is a View taken on the line III-III of Fig. 1.; Fig. 4 is a view taken on the line IV-IV of F ig. 1; Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view, on an enlarged scale, of a portion of the apparatus of Fig 3; Fig. 6 is a. view taken on the line VI-VI of Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view of a portion of the car roof, showing the abutment plate for the side entrance doors of Figs. 1 and 2.
The car unitis composed of car bodies 10 and 11 that are provided with end trucks and an intermediate truck, indicated diagrammatically at 12 and 13, respectively. These trucks may be of any well known construction and serve to support the car bodies. The end trucks. 12 may have the usual center pin connection with the body sections. The adjoining ends of the bodies 10 and .11 are provided with sills or plates 14 and 15, respectively, that overlap, as shown'more clearly in Fig. 4, to form a passage-way between the sections. One or both of the bodysections 10 and 11 has suitable swivel connection 16 with-the truck13,;throngh a truck bolster (not shown). A diaphragm 17, of any .wellxknown form, is connected to the body sections 10 and 11, so as'to form an enclosure through which passengers may walk when passing from one car body to the other. Suitable doors '18 are provided in the adjoinin ends of :the car bodies.

These doorsarc hinged at their remote edges and swing to open position, as indicated by the dotted lines 20 of Fig. 5, when it is desired to take on or discharge "passengers. In ordinary steam railway practice, a singled'oor is em ployedpinstead of :two doors ,.19,'1with the result that the permissible width of door space is greatly limited,.since the inner edge.
of the door must not be permitted to extend, when open, to a point too-near the center line ofthe car body, because door space must be left in the end of the car-to permit access to the platform thereof.
Inside doors are represented at -21, .and it will be seen thatthesedoors can be made muchwider thanthe end doors commonly found in railway cars',,.because the outer or side doors 19 do not extend inwardly a great distance when open! This is an important feature of my invention, since {the passengers have greater freedom of movement, and groups thereof can be more rapidly taken on and discharged. This is a particularly advantageous feature where, as Shown in the drawing, passengers in leaving the car move from each end of the car body toward its central portion. It will be seen that doors 19, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 will 4 be provided at each side of the car bodies.
A trap door 23, that is hinged at 24, in the usual manner, .is provided for closing the space which would otherwise be present between the'central platform 25 and the doors 19 when closed, and which serves as an extension to the platform 25 over which passengers may walk when entering or leaving the car at a station platform that is high, it being understood that the doors 19 are swung back when the train stops at a station.
If the station platform is low, the latch 26 of the trap door is moved to permit the door to be swung upward about its pivot 52%. The passengers then enter and leave the car by the steps 27.
The doors 19, when closed, abut against a plate 28 (Fig. 7) that is secured to a chan nel iron 29 and a Z bar 30. which extend longitudinally of the car. The bar 30 supports the edge of the car roof 31, and a moisture deflecting plate is interposed between the outer sheet of the roof and the plate 28. Rivets 33 serve to tie the Various parts together, openings 34 being provided in the inner flange of the channel 29 to permit of conveniently placing the rivets.v
The doors 21, as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 5 are slidably mounted in suitable guides (not shown).
I claim as my invention:
1. A railway passenger car body having a platform at its mid portion, steps extending downwardly from one edge of the platform, toward one side of the car, a trap door movable into horizontal position over the steps, and vertically disposed half-door sections disposed above the trap door and movable in opposite directions to permit access to the platform from a point exteriorly of the car.
2. A railway passenger car body having a platform at its mid portion, steps leading downwardly and outwardly from each longitudinal edge of the platform, a trap door movable into horizontal position over each group of steps, a side entrance door mounted above each of said trap doors, and means for supporting each entrance door for inward movement.

A railway passenger car body provided with downwardly and outwardly extending steps, a trap door movable into horizontal position above said steps, a pair of vertically disposed, independently movable, entrance doors above said trap door, edges of said doors being movable in opposite directions, and hinges supporting the remote edges of the entrance doors.
6. A railway passenger car body provided at its mid portion with a side-entrance door, means at said door for permitting discharge of passengers to a high-level station platform, and means for permitting discharge of passengers to low platforms.
7. A railway passenger car body provided with downwardly and outwardly extending steps, a trap door movable into horizontal position above said steps, a pair of vertically disposed entrance doors above said trap door, and means for supporting each of said doors for inward movement.
8. A railway passenger car body provided with downwardly and outwardly extending steps, a trap door movable into horizontal position above said steps, a pair of vertically disposed entrance doors above said trap door, the adjacent edges of said doors being movable in opposite directions, and hinges supporting the remote edges of said doors.
