Description

Patented June 7, 1927.
n e STAT-ES 1 BENCH Application filed- May 17,
This invention relates to work holding devices and the primary object is to provide a practical, efiicientand comparatively simple and easily operated bench clamp, which has a wide variety of uses but is especially adapted for use by carpenters, cabinet makers and other wood workers; Further and more specific'objects will be disclosed in the course of the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein: p
Fig. 1 is a plan view offa bench equipped withmy' improved benchclamp.
I Fig. is a front elevationof the bench and clamp as shownin Fig. 1. v
Fig. is a sectional elevation as. on the line -3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail view as on the line 4-- 1 in Fig. 1. Referring to'the drawing more particularly and by reference characters, A'designates the top of any suitable benchor table having legs 5.; The clamp comprises two separate and indel'iendently secured units C and D, which maybe respectively described as follows:
The unit U consists of a casting 5 which is clamped upon the bench or table A, and against the front edge thereof, by a screw 6 having a handle '7. The casting is provided vrith a lug S, the endface of which is preferably provided with a leather or fabric fac ing 9,,adapted to abut the piece to be clamped and thus prevent marring of the work. This may be considered as a secondary jaw, how-- ever, while the primary jaw comprises the corrugated or roughened end face 10 of .ahead ll which has a shank l2 slidably car- I ried in a vertical recess 13 in the lug 8. The shank 1.2 is provided with spring member 14 for frictional engagement against an inner wall of the recess 13,to hold the member 11-12 in any vertical position to which it may be adjusted.- It may here be noted that theshank 12 may be reversed in the lug S, sothat the smooth end ofthe head 11 may be substituted for the rough end lO, to
prevent marring offthe work, and that the member 11 .12 may be entirely removed when it is desired to use the fabric faced jaw 9 only. This is also true of the corresponding elements of'the clamping'unit D.
The unit D consists of a casting 16 which 'is secured to the bench by a-clamp screw 17 A 132 s. 'SerialNo. 109302,
having a handlelSf l he casting: pro.-
vided with a horizontal longitudinal slotlin' which is reciprocally.carried.aislide bar 19 i having ahead- 20-.which is faced: asat 21 and is directly opposed to andin clamping relation with'respect to the faced boss or lug 8 of the unit C. The head 20 is provided with a vertical slot in which is carried a is provided, in its back "side, with anotch 26 V i which 'slidably receives the outer flange 27 of a cam 28 which is rotatably carried on a bolt 29 (rigid in the casting) and which' has anoperating handle 30. The gripping action is obviously imparted by the cam to position by a lock nut 31 which screwson the slide bar by operatingthe handle 30, and v 1 the clamp islocked or set in its tightened V the bolt 29 and ismanipulated by a handle 32, It may here be noted that the top or,
inner end of the flange 27 is provided with a notch 33, the object of which is to permit the bar 19 to be slid into operative engagement with the flange, and thus renders. it possible to niakethe bar of one piece of material', while if it had to be passed over the flange it will beseenthatthe cam end would no doubt have to be releasable :or detachable to effect the movement. A further object of the notch 33 is to permit a quick and easy i removal of the member-s19 and 22 to render the entire device inoperable and consequent ly useless. Such a contingency might arise where a workman has taken the device toa 30b where he wishes to use it for several days.
but does not desire to carry it back each evening to prevent it from being stolen. Instead of doing this he-may-merely remove with him until he returns. There will thus be no incentive fora thief tosteal the i115 during the ,workmans absence.
The use and operation ofthe device may the bolt 19 and either conceal it or carry it be briefly described as follows: The clamp unit D is first secured to thebench or similar 1 support and near the right end of the. same; The unit C is then placed upon the support and is moved to theproper position, which position is determined by the size of the piece to be clamped,.and is there securely fastened I sure is exerted, at which time the handle 32 is turned to lock the cam 28 against reverse rotation.
- It is understood that suitable modifications may be made in the general design and structural details of the invention assherein shown and described, provided, however, that said modifications come within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Havingnow "therefore fully shown and described my invention, what I claim to be normally stationary clamp member, a horiv zonta'l'ly movable bar carried by the other unit and having a complementing clamp member, a cam member having a flange "for -venga;gement with and to actuate the bar; said flange having a notch which when registered with the bar Will-permit the removal of the same from the unit.
In testimony whereof I aflix my si 'nature;
MARTIN EVALD 'oLison.
