rolls. These knives are sometimes made of a. single piece of toolsteel and sometimes of a blade of tool steel welded to abody, portion of low-grade steel. In either case the finished knife is rigid throughout and is really a one-piece construction. After knives of this kind have become sufficiently Worn away by successive sharpenings, they are discarded and replaced by new ones. Moreover, such knives, particularly when made entirely of tool steel, tend to become slightly distorted if allowed to stand in the stock room for afew weeks, this distortion being probably dueto the slots formed in'them for *thepassage of the bolts bywhich they are adjustably clamped to the knife support.
l Vith a view to overcoming these disadvan tages, the present invention provides a novel two-part knlfe compr sing a body portion {and a replaceable blade. In the illustrative :construction the body portion and-blade are ,held together by a snap fastener so that the {two-part knife can be handled just as in ,the old form; and, in order to clamp the two parts firmly in place upon the knife support,

be removed and replaced when )blade can tact and the blades being of small extent and unslotted donot cause trouble by war ingr 1 1 T iis and other features of the invention, including certain details of construction and combinations of parts, will be described as pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings,
Fi gure. 1 is a vertical longitudinal, sectional view of a portion of a leather skiving machine in which the present invention is embodied;
. Figure 2 is a plan of the two-part knife, and I Figure 3 isa detail in perspective showing more particularly the means for holdin g the two parts of the knifetogether. i The machine chosen for illustration is a counter skiving machine of the general type i of that shown in Patent N0.-1,17;3,359, grant ed Feb. 29, 1916, upon an application filed 1n the name of Lane. It comprises afeed roll 1, a matrix roll 3,2; series of presserfingers 5 and a knife sup ort 7, which is part i of the frame of the mac' line and has afflat upper surface upon which the knife rests. and over which the knife is adjustable. It
will be understood that the rolls are rotated in a direction to cause the leather bla nk-to be fed to the knife Whichskives ofi that portionofthe blank which projects above the matrix 9 of the roll 3. No; further 'description of the construction andmode of operation of the machine will be given, ref erence being made to the patent; Moreover, it should be understood that the particular type of machine which has been'shown has been chosen merely for illustrative purposes form of an open ring 210i spring steel which I I is inserted in av circular groove 23, said. groove being formed partly in the blade 13 and partly in the body, portion 1 5. The spring ring holds the two parts of the knife together quite firmly so that the knife can be adjusted toward and from the rolls as may be required. v i
The knife rests, as shown in Fig. 1, upon the flat upper surface of the support 7. It is necessary to .clampthe knife firmlyin place, and it is especially zdesirable that the blade be clamped to the support as nearthe cutting edge of the blade as possible so that the edge shall not give or spring during the cuttingoperation. To this end as well as to ensure that the body portion 15 shall also be firmly clampedto the support? irrespective of any slight variation in thickness of the blade and body portion, there is provided a clamping member 25 in the form of a plate which is slightly hollowed out on its underside, as shown in Fig. 1. .The rear portion of this plate engages the body portion of the knife somewhat to the rear of its middle, while the forward portion of the plate engages the blade along a locality adjacent to its outing edge. Cap screws 27 pass through suitable holes in the clamping plate and are threaded into the knife support. The clamping plate thus holds the knife in adjusted position on the knife support in such manner that the tendency of the knife edge to spring during the cutting operation is counteracted. In order to provide for accurate adjustment of the knife toward the rolls, two adjusting screws 29 are threaded into the knife support and engage suitable shoulders on the body portion 15 as shown.
Although the invention has been set forth as embodied in a particular construction, it should be understood that the invention is not limited in the scope of its application to the particular construction which has been shown and described.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A two-part knife comprising a body portion having a flat under surface, a blade of substantially the same thickness as that of the knife and also having a fiat under surface, said blade being located in front of the body portion with the rear edge of the blade abutting the front edge of the body portion, and a member for holding the parts together, said member being capable of manual manipulation from operative to inoperative position whereby the blade and body portion may be readily detached from eachother at any time.
2. A two-part knife for a splitting machine, said knife comprising a body portion, a blade and a resilient member for holding the two parts detachably together, said body portlon and blade having surfaces located in the same plane and adapted to rest upon a flat supporting surface of the machine.
3. A two-part knife adapted to rest upon a support, said knife comprising a body portion and a blade, means detachable from the blade and body portion for holding the two parts detachably together, and means for engaging the two pars and clamping them to the support.
4. two-part knife adapted to rest upon a support, said knife comprising a body portion and a detachable blade, means for holding the two parts detachably together, and means for clamping the two parts directly to the support, said clamping means including a plate hollowed out on its knifecontacting face and contacting at its ends respectively with the body portion and. with the blade.
5. A two-part knife for leather splitting machines comprising a body portion, and a replaceable blade, a resilient member adapt ed to hold them together, and means for clamping the parts to the support.
6. A two-part knife for leather splitting machines adapted to rest with both parts upon a support comprising a body portion, and a replaceable blade, a resilient member adapted to hold them together, and means for clamping the parts to the support, said means comprising a plate hollowed out on its knife-contacting face and adapted to engage the blade along a locality near the cutting edge thereof.
7. A two-part knife for leather cutting machines comprising a body portion and a replaceable blade adapted to rest upon a support and means for clamping the parts directly to the support, said clamping means comprising a'plate hollowed out on that face which contacts with the parts of the knife.
8. A two-part knife for leather cutting machines comprising a body portion and a replaceable blade adapted to rest upon a sup port, the contacting edges of the two parts being straight, and means for clamping the parts directly to the support, said clamping means comprising a plate hollowed out on that face which contacts with the parts of the knife.
9. A two-part knife for splitting machines comprising a .body portion and a detachableblade adapted to rest upon asupport with the rear edge of the blade abutting the front edge 'of the body portion, means whereby the two parts may be adjusted in unison over the support, and means for clamping them both directly to the support.
