Description

UNITE TTES SAMUEL It. KROUSE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,830, dated May 4, 1875; application filed March 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. Kaonsn, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in the Manufacture of Overalls, Blouses, and other clothing; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention 01' experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in the manufacture of clothing, such as overalls, blouses, and jumpers, and all that class of goods which are worn during manual labor, and are subjected to heavy strain at difi'erent points. These goods are very liable to rip and wear rapidly; and my invention consists in a novel construction, and the use of strengthening-pieces of peculiar construction at various points, so that I am enabled to counteract the greatest strain and overcome the tendency to rip.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a view of a pair of overalls made with my improvements. Figs. 2, 3, show the application to other garments.
A represents a pair of overalls, to which I have shown my invention as applied. B is the band around the top, to which suspenderbuttons are sewed; and C C are various pockets. Across the tops of these pockets 1 form a stay, D, which is turned down and stitched to the upper part of the pocket, and resembles a flap or pocket-cover, without the use of the separate piece. The ends of this stay are carried out a short distance beyond the edge of the pocket. running to a point, and are firmly stitched, as shown at E.
By this construction I tie together the angle or juncture re-enforces, thus re-enforcing the re-enforces themselves, and at the same time protect the whole line of the pocket, and avoid the necessity of the ordinary pocketflap. a
in order to make a button-stay, and at the same time secure the band and pocket-opening, I make a piece, F, which is stitched with its upper end at the upper edge of the band B. The button G is sewed through this piece, and also the band, thus preventing it from being torn out. The strip F extends across the lower edge of the band, which is thusfirmly secured. From this point it is tapered and crosses the corner of the pocket-opening, being firmly stitched, and forming a stay at this corner.
The back'strap H is so formed that it passes along from the point of stitching I, and its upper part beneath the lower edge of the band, as at J, and is there stitched in. From this point the strap extends downward and across the side or hip seam K, and the lower corner of the pocket C, thus serving as a pocket-stay and a powerful re-enforce to the hip-seam, which is thus prevented from ever ripping.
By m y construction and method of strengthening the re-enforcing pieces I succeed in resisting the greatest strains. 7
I am aware that the angles or points of juncture of pockets in pants have been re-enforced and prevented from tearing by means of'rlvets, as shown in the patent granted to J. W. Davis, May 20, 1873; reissued March 16,1875; and I am also aware that pockets of overalls have been re-enforced by small pieces-of textile fabric sewed across the corners of such pockets, as shown in the patent to Greenbaum, August 25, 1874, and numbered 154,473; but such means I do not claim broadly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. The stay D, stitched across the pockettop to resemble a flap, and having its ends extended over and beyond the pocket-corners, to form the re-enforces E E, as and for the purpose herein described.
2. In combination with the'waistband B, the compound re-enforce or stay F, when constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The back-strap H, constructed as de scribed, in combination with the waistband B, hip-seam K, and pocket-corner, substantially as herein set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
SAMUEL R. KROUSE. LL. s.]
