UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,

FILING CABI ET.
' Application filed September 29;1925. Serial No. 59,272. i
provide a cabinet of the above mentioned type which may be manipulated for placing any filing space, with its book or unit, in a convenient position in respect to a person working at a fixed object, such as a desk or table.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanyin drawings forming a part of this specificatlon and in which numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, partly broken away, of the filing cabinet embodying this invention, and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the cabinet shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawing, of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of this invention, the numeral 5 designates a base of any desired form which is centrally recessed at 6 and has communicating with said recess an axially extending bore 7. Secured to the top face of the base is the bottom flange 8 of a cylindrical block 9 which is provided with a bore 10 adapted to register with the bore 7 in the base 5. This block 9 has formed on its upper end a circular ball race 11 adapted for receiving the anti-friction balls 12 which separate the upper end of the block 9 from the inner end of an inverted, cup-shaped block 13. The side 13 of the cup-shaped block 13 is positioned to surround the upper end portion of the cylindrical block 9 for aiding in maintaining the cup-shaped block 13 upon the block 9.
Suitably secured to the upper end of the cup-shaped block 13, as by the screws 14- passing through the flange 15 of the member 13, are a pair of superimposed disks 16. These disks and the inverted cup-shaped block 13 are all provided with registering bores 17. The central portion of the upper disk 16 is recessed at 18 for receiving the reduced end of the post 19 which has its wherein for the purpose upper reduced end received within therecess 20 of the disk-like plate 21. Secured to the top face of the disk-like plate 21 are the disks 22 which are of the same diameter as the disks 16. It will be seen thatthe post 19, disk-like plate21, and lower'one of the two disks 22 are provided with bores 23, 24: and 25resp ectively with the bore 25 being of increased diameter tothe remaining bores. Positioned within the bores 7, 10, 17,
23, 24 and 25 is a journal rod 26which has its head received within the bore 25 of the lower one of the disks 22 and its nut portion located in the recess 6 of the base 5. It will be noted that the failure to form a bore in the top disk 22 will cause the head of the pivot rod 26 to be concealed from view.
Located at equi-spacedpoint-s around the peripheries of the disks 16 and 22 are the vertically extending rods 29 which are secured at their oppositeends to, the disks 16 and 22 and pass therethrough as shown to receive retaining nut-s upon the projecting ends thereof. These rods 29 are intended to divide the cabinet into a plurality of filing spaces and they may be provided in any desired number.- Figure 1 clearly shows in section and in side elevation, means for spacing the peripheries of the disks 16 and 22, which means includes a spacing tube 28 inclosing a rod 29 between the disks 16 and 22. Interposed between the ends of the spacing tube 28 and the adjacent faces of the inner disks 16 and 22 are washers 30 which will prevent the end edges of the spacing tube 28 from being forced into the said disks 16 and 22 and provide end metallic bearings therefor.
To enable the filing cabinet to be easily manipulated, an operating ring 31 is fastened to the under side of the lower disk 16 by the downwardly and outwardly extending brackets 32 which are secured to the lower disk 16 by the screws 33 and are connected to the operating ring 31 by having extremities rolled around the said ring, as at 34.
To designate the various filing spaces 35, formed between the vertical rods 29, the peripheries of the upper disks 22 are provided with reference numerals 36. These reference numerals 36 are clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 as being carried by a band 37 which is secured to the edges of the disks 22, however, it being understood that this band may be dispensed with and the numerals printed or stamped directly upon the edges of the disks.
It is to be understood that the form of this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described the invention, I claim In a rotatable filing cabinet, a central supporting structure comprising a base stand, a bearing block secured to the stand, an in vertcd cup shaped block rotatable on the bearing block and having a depending annular flange inclosing tlie upper end of the bearing block, a relatively large disk member axially secured to the upper side of the rotatable block with a central depression therein, a vertical post having a lower end extension seated in the disk depression, a head plate having a depression in its lower face, an end extension on the upper end of the post received in the head plate depression, a relatively large disk member axially secured to the upper side of the head plate, circumferentially spaced guide rods connecting the outer edges of the disk l'UQH'llJGl'S, said upper disk member having a central socket in the lower side thereof, there being ren'is tering bores in the central supporting struc ture, a vertical rod extending through said bores with the lower end anchored in the base stand and the upper end extending into the upper disk member socket and means carried by opposite ends of the rod cooperat ing with the base stand and head plate to retain the superstructtn'e on the base stand.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
FRANK J. DUNN.
