STEAM TRAP.
. Application filed March 5, 1925. Serial No. 13,257.
Thisinvention relates to an improvement 1 -Another important feature of the -inven-' tion resides inthe feature of a noveltrap structure of such a character as to permit the trap to be taken apartand'cleaned without disconnecting-the pipes which lead to and from the trap.
Another object resides in the provision of a steam trap having a novel form and arrangement of valve operating means and which is in general of simple and durable construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and easyand comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. V
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a steam trap constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a view thereof in longitudinal central vertical section, and
Figure 3 is a group view in perspective of the parts of the valve and valve operating mechanism prior to assembly.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the steam trap embodying the present invention includes a hollow and generally cylindrical body portion 1 having an integral bottom 2 closing its lower end and forming a main float chamber. At one side of the body 1 an outlet or auxiliary chamber 3 is formed and is preferably cast integral. with the body portion 1. This chamber 3 is comparatively narrow and has a bottom wall 4rv which is continuous with the bottom 2 of the portion 1, vertical side walls 5 and an inclined top wall 6 which merges into the body portion 1. At its small lower end the chamber 3 is formed with an integrally threaded opening 7 with which a nipple 8 is threadedly engaged.
A cap or closure 10 is provided for the open upper end of the body portion 1, the cap 10 having a downwardly extending flange. 11 which is'a smooth fit in the upper end of the body portion 1 and an outwardly extending flange 12 which engages the upper edge of'the body portion. Means are provided for firmly securing the closure 10 to the body portion 1 in such manner as to permit of; the ready release of the parts. This means preferably inc'ludesa spider, designated generally at 13, and having a hub 1 1 1 and downwardly 'curved spider arms15 terminating in inturned endsj16. The inturned ends 16 are engageable with outwardly directed lugs 17 integrally formed with or suitably secured to the body, portion 1.
The hub 14 of. the'spider 13 isformed with a threaded bearing 18 in which a shank 19 of a screw 20 is threadedly engaged. The
lower end of the screw20 bears on a block 21 provided on the cap or closurelO. When the screw 20 is turned so as to cause its shank to advance downwardly through the threaded bearing 18 itengages the block and pulls the spider upwardly. Ifthe spideris so disposed annularly with' respect to the;
container that the inturned ends-160i its arms are engaged with the lugs 17in the body portion 1 the spider 13 will be held against upward movement and consequently the block 21 and closure 10 are formed downwardly on to the container. By releasing the screw 20 and turning the spider to disengage the inturned vends 16 of its arms from the lugs 17, the spider may beremoved and so also may be the cap or closure 10.
The nipple 8 is located adjacent the bottom of the trap and this nipple provides the discharge outlet for the water of condensation. The steam and water enter the trap through a pipe 22 connected with the nipple 23 located adjacent the top of the trap.
The nipple 8 is provided with a vertically disposed ported partition 24 formed with a valve seat 25 with which a horizontallydisposed needle valve 26 co-acts, the needle valve being located within the outlet cham gages. A look nut is engagedwith the PATENT ornce,
shank 28 and with the needle valve. The
head of the bolt '29'is pivotally connected by a pivot pin 31 to a vertically and downwardly extending bifurcated arm 32 of a valve rod, designated generally at 33. The
valve rod 33 hasa bearing 34 which is pivotally mounted on a pivot rod 35 and 1 this valve rod also has a relatively long arm 36 side walls 50f the outlet chamber 3. Cotter pins 41' are employed for preventing accidental axial displacement of the pivot pin .31. V In the cap or closure member 10 a valve-controlled outlet or vent 45 may be provided. 7
VVith' this arrangement the movement of the valve may be readily adjusted by threading the shank 28 into the body portion 28 of the valve 26 or by unscrewing the shank 28 from this socket and then by securing the parts in adiustedpositi-on by means of the lock nut 30. When the trap is in operation the steam and .water flow into the body portion 1 through the pipe 22 and the valve 26 remains closed until the'Water has risen above the level of the port in the partition 24; When the water, has reached a predetermined level the valve 26 is opened and the water discharges until the desired level of Water is, had; This operaton is V practicallycontinuous. An important feature in. the effective operation of the trap isbelieved to reside in the novel form of valve operating means. 'The trap may be readily taken apart and repaired or cleaned by removing the closure 10 and disconnecting the bolts40and removing the pin 35.
I claim: 7 r 7 A steam trap comprising a main float chamber having an inlet near its'top and an auxiliary outlet chamber extending'laterally therefrom and having an outlet opening near its-bottom, a nipple threaded in.
said outlet and having a ported vertical pHItltlOIrpI'OVlClQCl wlth a valve seat and with valve guidingfingers extending rearwardly of said seat, a valve located in said trap and cooperating with said seat, said valve having ahead with athreaded socket,
a bolt adjustably engaging-said socket and having an apertured head, an L-shaped float carrying lever having its short arm bifurcated, extended downwardly, straddlin and pivotally connected "with said bolt head, the long arm of said lever being provided with a float located in said main chamber and ext-ending horizontally,a fulcrum forusaid lever extending through the inner end of said short armand arranged transversely of said auxiliary chamber, and socketed bolts extending through the side walls of said auxiliary chamber to receive'the ends of said fulcrum whereby thevalve may be assembled and adjusted from the exterior of the trap.
