Description

F. l... BAM'FORD LAMP CATCH Filed Sept. 30. 1925 Patented May 3, 1927.
UNITE-n lEIRAlIIl1 L. BAMFORD, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO C. M. HALL LAMP COM- PANY, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN,
`A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
LAMP CATCH.
Application ledseptember 30, 1925. Serial No. 59,659.
The invention relates to vehicle lamps and has more particular reference to the means for holding the lens ring in closed position and the invention consists in the novel construction of such retaining means as hereinafter rset forth. v
.In the drawings:
Figure 1 isa longitudinal section through a portion of a lamp housing and ring showing my improved catch applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of one of the loops.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of a portion of Figure 1.
Avis a -lamp housing of any suitable construction which is provided with a reinforcement B to which the securing shank C is attached. D is a lens holding ring containing the lens D having suitable engagement with the forward edge of the housing A, such as the shoulder bearing E, forwardly extending flange F and inwardly extending flange G on the housing, with which parts the ring is telescopically engaged. His a sealing gasket which is arranged between the flange G formed on the reector G and the lens D forming a yielding bearing for the latter, the flange G having a bearing on the flange Gr formed on the housing.
The lens ring is preferably provided with a yieldable hinge engagement with the housing which, as shown, comprises a. loop spring member I having at one end a hook I for engaging an aperture in the flange G. The opposite end Iz'of this spring passes through a slotted aperture J in the'member F and engages a slotted bearing K in the ring member,- while the intermediate portion of the spring has a bearing on a portion of the housing whereby outward movement of the loop is prevented. Thus, when the ring is angularly inclined, the slotted bearing K may be engaged with the projecting end I2 of the spring which latter will yield as the lens D enga-ges the sealing ring H.
, To retain the opposite side .of the lens ring I have provided a loop spring L having one end anchored to the housing and its opposite end extending outward through a slot therein and pivotally connected t0 a hook member M. This hook member is engageable with an aperture in the ring D and because of the resiliency of the loop, is yieldably adjustable. Thus the rin D is free to seat itself against the gasket and ing having a slot and a lens ring engagen able with the casing, of means for yieldably retaining said lens ring in position on the casing, said means including a loop spring having one end detachably anchored to the casing and its other end extending through the slot in the casing for engagement with the said lens ring, said loop 'spring being provided With means for `bracing the end extendingl through the slot against movement in any direction except a direction parallel to the axis of the said lamp. y, i
2. Ina lamp, the combinationwith ra slotted casing having a flange at its forward end and a lens ring engageable with said casing,-'of means for yieldably retaining saidl lens ring m position comprising a loop spring having a portion detachably anchored to the said flange, a second portion extending through the slot in the said casing for engagement with the lens ring and a third portion bearing against the said casing for bracing the portion extending `through the slot against movement in any direction except va direction parallel tothe axis of the said lamp. p 3. In a lamp, the combination with a casing having a ange and a slot at its for- Ward end and a lens ring engageable with said casing, of means for yieldably retaining said lens ring in position comprising a loop spring having one end detachabl57 anchored to the said ange, its other end extending through the slot vin'gthe said casing for engagement with the lens ring and its intermediate portion offset for abutting engagement with the said casing to `brace the end extending through the said slot against movement in any direction except a direction parallel to the axis ofthe Said lamp.
. 4. In a vehicle lamp, the combination with an apertured housing and a lens holding ring engageable therewith, of yieldableretaining means for ysaid ring `'comprising a y pair of loopr Sp1-ings each having one endv de- 'en-ably anchored-to said housing and the opposite end projecting outwardv through an y aperture therein means on ring :forvenfv geg-ing the; end: ofronefofeaid springsto` T lfornite jvieldahle hinge connection and a hook -egiteh pivotally Vsecured, to vthe .end of the other of saidv springe for hooked engagement with the opposite Side of said ring. 1n i 5; in a. iainpethe. eoinbineition withy a lens fing' Je `tforW-'fi-i?d1yA projecting 'portion lfor y teleseopioaliy engaging said ring and proe videdwith an inwardly extending'ange and i V.upperan'dflower Slots, a sealing gasket he `lens, find menne-for yieldably retaining Said tweenSfiidinwiirdiy extending flange and the ring ycomprising :i loop spring having yone end detachalolyv` anchored to the inwardlyex tending lizinge' of said housingand its 0pt posite .end projecting outward through the upper slot therein to engage the slot in said e pirotzdly' eonnected to the outer 'vend of said lastA mentioned spring member for hooked engagement with theopposite `side of rsaid ring.v Y
