LIQUID METER.
Application filed July 12, 1923, Serial No. 651,144, and in France March 29, 1923.
The present invention relates to improvements in liquid meters of the type involving a known driving device actuating a shaft which is interrupted by a clutch device, a cam controlling the device for fastening the valve disposed in the supply conduit being keyed. to said shaft outwardly of the clutch device together with a pointer moving overa dial.
The present invention has for its ob ect to provide a liquid meter, in which the Zero point on the dial is made to coincide with the maximum number of litres which can be supplied; and the lever holding the feed cock open is provided with an arrangement comprising a roller normally moved laterally by a spring in one direction and adapted to be moved in the other direction by means of a lever actuated by the valve stem, whereby the said roller may be moved into and out of the plane of the cam.
Due to my improvements,' it is simply necessary to make a single adjustment in order to supply the maximum quantity of liquid in succession as may times as may be desired.
The appended drawings which are given by way of example illustrate a constructional form of meter according to my invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus, provided with the special device for fastening the valve.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary representation of the slide controlling the valve and the said cam.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the latter elements in their position immediately before the end of a feeding operation.
Fig. 4 is a like view of the elements after the said operation.
The motion of the driving device a is transmitted through the wheels 1, 2 and 3 to the axle 4 which has at the upper part a worm 4O co-operating with a worm wheel 7 41 keyed to the hollow shaft 9. This latter shaft, which is provided at its outer end with a radially toothed disc 8, rotatably receives the shaft 10 secured to a second toothed disc 12 which is held in engagement with the first-mentioned disc by means of the spring 16. The disc 12 is further provided with the pointer 14 for coaction with the graduations of a dial 15.
A cam disk 13 and a milled operating head 11 are further mounted upon the shaft 10. In the embodiment according to the invention, a cam is provided upon the said cam disk and is of such size as to occupy but one-half the width of said disk. A valve housing 19 is'connected with said pipe Z), said valve comprising a stem 22 carrying a valve 22 actuated by a spring 29 and adapted to engage a seat 30. he housing 19 is provided with a connection 26 and a conduit for the discharged liquid. In order to lock the valve 22 of the fuel feed tube 6 in its open position, the stem 22 of said valve has the shoulder D co-operating with a slide 61 horizontally movable by the action of said cam, the said slide being held in contact withthe cam.
For this purpose, the said slide is provided with a spring 62 retained by a guiding stop-piece 63; the opposite end of the slide is provided with a fork 66 supporting a shaft 64 upon which is mounted a slidable roller 65; -A- spring 67 disposed in the rear of said roller urges the same in the direction of the cam 60 whilst a sleeve-like extension integral with its other face which passes through the adjacent fork 66, permanently bears against the end of a lever 68. This latter which is movable on a vertical axle 69 is so arranged that its outer arm can be actuated by the circular shoulder D of the rod 22.
The operation of the said device is as follows:
lVhen it is desired to measure out the maximum number of litres (shown on the dial) various times in succession, at the start the parts will be in the position of Fig. 4. By pushing upon the stem 22 valve 22 is opened and the liquid flowing through the driving device a rotates the shaft 10 and disk 13 through the members 1, 3, 2, 4, 40, 41, 9, 8 and 12. Upon opening the valve the slide 61 is moved to the right by the spring 62 and-it engages below the shoulder D so as to fasten the stem 22 in the open position. As the disk completes a revolution, the cam 60 engages the roller 65 driving it to the left together with the slide 61 as shown in Fig. 3, which compresses the spring 62 and the stem 22 being released, the shoulder D comes into contact with the lever 68 which swings on the axle 69 so as to again bring said roller into the inoperative position of Fig. 4 wherein the spring 67 is compressed. The operations are thus pertormed in succession without requiring the cam 13 to be turned by hand, and the zero of the dial noiv coincides with the maximum number of litres to be supplied.
Should it be desired to supply a smaller number of litres than the maximum, it is simply necessary before each operation to pull the shaft 10 outwardly against the tension oil the spring; 16, and then turn it together with the disk 13 and cam (50 to bring the pointer ll ot the disc 12 by hand in the usual manner opposite the cone spoiidingnumber ot the dial 15. Thus when the valve 22 is opened the above-described o ration will be performed in an analogous manner, the liquid being permitted to how through the open valve 22 until, by the rotation of the disk 13, the cam 60 ell'ects dis placement of the slide (51 thus releasing the 2 and permitting the valve to close.

Obviously, the said apparatus is susceptihle at all desired modifications in detail Without departing from the spirit of the inv ntion. and in particular, the device may eonuniae a boss having); the same Width as the cam. and the roller is herein movable beyond the plane or the said cam.
I claim:
'1. In a liquid meter, a valve including a stem adapted to be manually actuated to open the valve, a slide eoacting with the valve stem to lock the latter in open position, a rotatable cam, a member on said lide adapted to be engaged and operated by said cam whereby to release the slide,
said member being displaeeable laterally to a position out ot the path of the cam, a member mounted on said slide actuated by the valve stem during the closing movement ot the latter and operating to displace the first mentioned member out of the path 01 the cam, and means normally tending to return the first mentioned member to cam engagingposition.
