OILER FOR SPINNING MACHINES.
Application led January This invention relates to an improved construction of oiling device morefparticula'rly adapted for cap spinning machines; and has for its object to provide simple and effective means for oiling the bearing portion of the package carrying tube, as it is rapidly rotated on the spindle, from the oil reservoir which is carried on the lift rail. i i
A further object of this invention is to mount one or more oil pads in the reservoir, one of the pads being in contact with the spindle, and to also provide a lid for the reservoir having an oil-measi'iring recess in .its face and air and oil holes through it communicating with the reservoir below for supplying vboth oil and air to this reservoir to conduct the oil thereto when applied and also to prevent the forming of a vacuum in the reservoir to permit the rapid rotation of the tube to lift the oil from the reservoir and lubricate the spindle and tube throughout the length thereof when it bears upon the spindle.
A still further object of this invention is to concave the under surface of the lower flanged portion on the tube-driving whirl, which portion is arrangedA to extend down into the oil-measuring recess of the lid and cover the oil and vent holes therein to create by its rapid rotation an air pressure and direct the same downwardly through the oil holes to act upon the oil held m the pads 'in the reservoir and assist the rapidly rotating tube to lift the oil upwardly through the pads to lubricate the spindle and the tube during the reciprocating travel of the latter.
lVth these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 6 is a side elevation showing a portion of the end of the lift rail with a stop or lug formed on the reservoir cup to prevent relative rotation of the reservoir on the rail.
It is found in the practical operation of cap spinning` machines, very difficult to oil the rapidly ruiming package carrying tube while traversing vertically on its spindle, sufliciently to prevent undue wear even though oil be applied to this old style spindle two or three times a day, and even then portions of the tube become drywhich greatly limits the working life thereof, but by the use of my improved fountain type of oiler the attendant needs only lto apply oil to the reservoir but once in two weeks instead of twice a day, as by the old method, and instead of leaving a portion of the tube dry by this old hand-oiling method any desired amount of oil may be forced up inside the tube to keep the same fully lubricated, which is accomplished by simply changing the shape of that portion of the lower flange of the whirl that sets into the oil recess in the lid member and also by adjusting its vertical position in the recess; also by the 'use ofniy improved oiling device which provides perfect lubrication for the tube, the power required for driving the package carrying whirl is greatly reduced, the wearing life of this mechanism is greatly increased and the tube being so properly oiled will run at a more uniform speed thereby setting a more uniform twistin the yarn and so produce a yarn of a much higher quality and of greater value; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of my invention and showing one construction of voiling device by which these advantageous results may be accomplished y With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the bolster rail of the usual cap spinllil lou

The package is carried on the tube 15 to which tube is connected the whirl 16 that driven by a belt (not sho-wn) to rotate the saine at a high velocity durinsoil the bobbin winding operation.

This lid nieinber 19 is provided with onel or more holes 26 through its tace communiatingj with and permitting the oil `trono the recess above to drop down and saturate the pads in the reservoir below. The upper central portion of this lid is provided with an 1ip1-stainiiiig shoulder 2T presenting a suitable bt-:arinnl l'or the support of the whirl 28 thereon. which shoulder has a central opening; 32) through which the spindle extends.
The lower portion ot this whirl 28 is provided with an annular iiang'e 29 which eX tends slightly downwardly to project into the oil recess 22 but to run clear ot the bottom thereof and the under side of this flange is concavcd as at whereby a rapid rotation et' thc whirl has a tendency to give the air pressure created in the concaved space beneath, a downward direction so as to force the air with slight pressure through the oil holes 2li to act upon the oil in the pads and torce the saine upward into the pad 2.5 in contact with the spindle to cooperate with and assist the action ot the rapidly rotatingV tube to 'further act upon the oil in this pad 25 and litt the saine up through the tube to the very top thereot and so thoroughly luln'icate the spindle and the tube throughout the entire length ot the latter. ln other words. the traverse of the. tubo on the spindle may be -.t1/ while the length ot the tubo may be t5 and the oil by my improved method will travel to the very top of the `tube and `tully lubricate the saine throughout its entire length.
lt will be noted that by my in'lproved construction the lubricating pad that contacts with the spindle sets up inside ot the lower edge oi the whirl, in close j noxiniity to the point ot' greater-'t strain and greatest triction due to the tension ot' the driving hand on the whirl.
My improved oiling device is extremely simple in cinistruction and is etl'ective in its operation and by its use the spindle and the tube are conipletely lubricated.
It found :in practice by changing the shape oit the concavity ot the under side ot the` flange, and the distance the flange extends into the recess in the lid will vary to ccnisiderable `extent theJ amount ol lubricatinp; oil which will flow up through the tube.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that l reserve the privilege oli resorting to all the nuchanical changes to which the device is sua'eptiblc. the invention being' detined and limited only by the terms o'l the appended claims.

2. In a spinning machine, the combination with the spindle and package carrying tube and driving whirl, of an oiling device for the tube and spindle, comprising an oil reservoir supported on the lift rail of the machine, an oil pad in the reservoir, the bottom wall of said reservoir having a spindle receiving opening, an oil retaining upturned flange about said opening, a lid member on the reservoir having combined oil and air holes communicating with the reservoir below, said whirl having a flange of a size to cover said holes and having a bottom surface formed to adapt it to force air downwardly thru the holes upon rapid rotation of said spool, the rapid rotation of the whirl and` tube serving to cause the oil in the reservoir to move upwardly to lubricate the contacting surface of the tube and spindle.
3. In a spinning machine, the combination with the spindle and package carrying tube and .driving whirl, of an oiling device for the a downwardly directed air pressure through said holes to assist in directing the oil upwardly through said pad and tube.
5. In a spinning machine, the combination with the spindle and package carrying tube and its driving whirl, of an oiling device for the tube and spindle comprising an oil reservoir carried by the lift rail of the machine, an oil pad .supplied with oil from the reservoir in contact with the spindle, a lid niember on the reservoir having an annular recess in its upper face, a raised central bearing member for the whirl and tube having a central spindle receiving opening and having air and oil holes communicating with the reservoir below, the whirl said whirl having an annular belt guiding flange eX- tending downwardly into said recess in the lid but clear of the bottom wall thereof, the under surface of said flange being concaved to direct a current of air downwardly lthrough said holesn to act-upon the oil be-
