rlhe gage or pressure roll 23 also serves to retain the work in the smooth or flat condition in which it is put by the spreading cylinder 2O and presents the work in this condition to the knife 22, t-hereby preventing the work from being presented to the knife in a wrinkled condition and obviating the possibility of the work being cut up into strips or ribbons and consequently damaged.
The knife or cutter 22 may be reciprocated as shown, by means of an elbow lever 26 (see Figs. 4 and 5), which is operatively connected with a main or driving shaft 27 by a reciprocating member 28 and a link 29. The main shaft 27 is provided as shown with fast and loose pulleys 30, 31, (see Fig. 1) and is connected with the bladed cylinder to drive the latter by a link chain 32 and sprocket wheels 33, 34, whereby the cylinder 2O is rotated in the same direction as the drum so that their closely adjacent surfaces are moving in opposite-directions thus enabling the cylinder to spread out the work on the surface of the drum.
The bladed cylinder 2O is connected with the feed roll 23 by gears 36, 37, sprocket wheel 38, link chain 39 and sprocket wheel (see Fig. 3), which arrangement rotates the feed roll 23 in a direction opposite to that of the drum so that the roll co-operates with the drum in feeding` the work.
The drum 10 is rotated from the main shaft 27 through a counter shaft 42 (see F 1 and 2), which is connected with the main shaft 27 by a gear 43 and pinion 44, and the counter-shaft 42 provided with a pinion 45 shown in Fig. 3, which meshes with a gear 46 on the drum shaft 12 and is rendered fast and loose on the counter shaft 27 by a clutch of known construction, the movable member 5U of which is actuated bj a forked arm 51 on a, rock shaft 52 provided with a crank 523, which is connected by a link 54 with a crank on a shaft 56 provided with a foot treadle 57.
The clutch member is moved into its outposition by a spring 58 attached to an arm 59 on the treadle shaft 5G.
The drum 10 is rotated in one direction, indicated by the arrow 100, and is stopped at the end of each revolution by an automatic stop mechanism comprising an annular fiange or ring G() attached to the gear 4G and provided with a slot G1 into which is adapted to enter a projection 62 on an arm S3 fast on a rock shaft 64, which is provided with a segmental gear 65, which meshes with a segmental gear 6G on the rock shaft When the foot treadle 57 is depressed to throw in the clutch member 50, the projection 62 is withdrawn from the slot G1 and the drum is free to be turned one revolution. The projection 62 rides on the face of the ring or iiange 60 until the drum has made a revolution, whereupon the slot 61 is brought into position to be entered by the projection 62, which is moved therein by the spring 58.
As soon as the drum is started, the operator can remove his foot from the treadle. lVhen the drum is started, the clamping member 17 is closed by a spring 70, and at or about the time the drum has made arevolution, the clamping member 17 is automatically opened by a cam 71 on the framework, which cooperates with a roller 72 carried by one member 73 of a toggle, whose other member 74 is connected with the movable clamping member 17 (see Fig. lt will be understood that the clamping members 16, 17 are set in from the periphery of the drum so that there is no interference with the operation of the rolls or of the cutter 22. In introducing the work, the thinner portion is located for the operation of the clamping members so that the thicker portion cornes last and is dragged and fed to the cutter 22.
The bladed cylinder 2O is yieldingly pressed against the work by spring 75 whose pressure or tension may be adjusted by nuts 76 in a known manner, and the feed roll 23 may be acted upon in a similar manner by springs 77 whose pressure or tension is regulated by nuts 78.
The knife or cutter 22 is mounted in a suitable carrier, which is adjustable on the frame of the machine by means of screws 80 extended into slots 81, to position the knife with relation to the drum, and may be firmly secured in its adjusted position by screws 82, 83 or in any other suitable manner.
The clamping member 17 is moved away from the clamping member 16 a suilicient distance to afford a wide opening for the operator to insert one half of the hide or skin into the drum and to withdraw his hands while the claniping member 17 is stationary in its open position, thereby avoiding liability of the operator being injured by the clamping member 17.
Gne embodiment of the invention is shown, but it is not desired to limit the invention to the particular construction shown.
What I claim is:
1. In a machine for checking hides and other similar pieces of work, in combination, a rotatable drum to support the work, clamping mechanism carried by the said drum to secure the work thereto, a knife for operating on the work, a cylinder having helically arranged vanes to engage the Work on said drum and spread it out on the (lll thereon, a pressure roll arranged between the spreading cylinder and said knife and co--operating with the drum to feed the work to the knife, means for rotating said drum, means for automatically stopping the drum, and means for automatically operating said clamping mechanism to close and open the same.
3. In a machine for checking hides and other similar pieces of work, in combination, a rotatable support for the work, a
knife for operating on the work, means cooperating with the work support to spread and smooth out the work on the work support, and means interposed between the said spreading` means and said knife and co-operating with the rotatable work support for engaging the work with a firm uniform pressure to hold` it in its smooth, spread-out condition while it is being acted upon by said knife. n

In a machine for checking hides and other similar pieces of work, in combination, a drum to support the work, automatic clamping mechanism carried by said drum 'to secure the work thereto and to release the work at a predetermined' point 4in the operation of the machine, a non-rotary tool co operating with said drum to treat lthe work thereon, means co-operating with the drum to spread and smooth out the work on the drum prior to its being presented to said operating tool, and a roll interposed between the operating tool and said spreading means to press the Work on the drum and hold it in its smooth spread-out condition thereon while it is acted upon by said operating tool.
6. In a machine for cheeking hides and other similar pieces of work, a rotatable drum for supporting work, an automatic clamping member forfholding the work on the drum, a cutter movable to draw its cutting edge through the work, a member for spreading the work on the drum, and a roll located closely adjacent to the cutter and arranged to co-operate with the drum in presenting the work tothe cutter.
7. In a machine of the character described, a rotatable work support, a member for clamping the work on the support, spring means for closing the member yieldingly on the work, a toggle for opening the clamping member to release the work at a predetermined point in the rotation of the work support, a cutter movable to draw its cut ting edge through the work, and a roll located yclosely adjacent to the cutter and power driven to co-operate with the support in feeding the work to the cutter.
8. In a machine for cutting sheet material, a cutter, a rotatable work support, a member for spreading the work on the work support, and a pressure member between the spreading member and the cutter and having a roughened surface acting to press and to hold the work against the work support and rotatable in a direction Y the reverse of the work support to co-operate therewith in feeding the work to the cutter.
9. In a machine for cutting sheet material, a knife, a work support, a member for spreading and smoothing out the Work on the support, and a pressure member between the spreading member and the cutter and closely adjacent to the cutter, said pressure member operating to apply a firm pressure to the work uniform throughout its length to maintain the Work in the smoothed out condition effected by the spreading and smoothing member for presentation to the knife.

In a machine for cutting sheet material, a cutter, a rotatable work support, a member for clamping. work on the support, a member rotatable in the same direction as the work support for smoothing and spreading the work on the support, and a fluted roll rotatable in a direction the reverse of the work support and co-operating therewith in feeding the work to the cutter.
