HEATING DEVICE.

The improvements relate to heating devices, and particularly to devices adapted to be used in connection with a gas,o1l, or other burner, for the purpose of directing, regulatini, and distributing the combustion products thereof, and heated airnfor heating, drying, cooking and other similar purposes. 1t maiY also be used in connection with electric oi' other heating devices.
The objects of the improvements, among others, are to produce a simple, strong, and eflicient device of the character mentioned, which may be manufactured at a small cost for labor and materials, and may be used on ordinary burners or stoves and placed in position and adjusted for operation therewith` or removed therefrom without difficulty.
The improvements are illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end view of a heat regulatingand distributing device, embodying the improvements; Figure 2 is a side view of the same; Figure 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction mdicated bv the arrows in that figure; Figure si is a plan of the device with the top re moved.
rectangular frame or housing, comprising walls or sides 1, 2, 3, and 4l, composed of a single piece of sheet metal secured together by a lap-seam 5, forms the main frame of the device, and at the bottom of each of these sides is an air opening 6, through which air mavv enter or escape, as the case may be. The particular form of this heusingris not important, however, and while the preferred form of the openings G has a curved, scalloped upper edge, other forms may be employed.
.i base 7. on which the housing or drum is mounted, consists of a fiat piece of sheet metal with a large central opening 8, so that 1t mav be placed on the top plate of a gas or other burner and the flame, heat, and products of combustion permitted to pass therethrough into the interior of the drum. The upper edges of the walls 2 and 3 of the housing or drum also have cut-out portions 9 similar to those at the bottom, but wider and of greater area` forming openings for the egress of heat and combustion products. Recesses 10 and 11 are formed in the walls 1 and 4 and extend from a point near the bottom, to the top thereof providing air passages or flues through which air is admitted to the interior, and through which air may pass and escape under the roof or top near its open ends.
The top 12 consists of a piece of sheet metal bent into a form resembling a single gable roof, and is removably mounted on the top of the housing by means of small flanges 13 dep/ending therefrom and fitting over the upper edges of the latter. This top has an opening 14 from which extends a shield 15 opening outwardly, forming a duct through which heat products and air will pass in a lateral direction. This arrangement is particularly useful for drying purposes, as it directs heat laterally toward one side and sets up air currents which induce air passing from the open ends of the top to follow the same general direction.
A double deflector, comprising a sheet of metal having a narrow bottom 16 and upwardly and outwardly flaring curved sides 17 is positioned in the drum, the upper side edges of the deflector being in contact with the walls thereof, so that the deflector, which is of slightly greater diameter than the drum, will be held in position therein by frictional coaction due to the fact that when the defiector is pressed down inside the drum it is placed under compression. End deflectors 18 are secured to the deflector members 17 and may be removed and replaced therewith.
The sides of the flues 10 and 11 are cut out at the top, as shown at 19, and the drum is provided with feet which support it on the bottom plate 7.
1t will be seen that the top inner defiectors and drinn are separable, so that one or more of these parts may be used or omitted as desired, and that by removing the top the drum may be used with or without the deflectors, for heatingor cooking purposes, or both. @ther advantages of the construction will be apparent to those skilled in the art or familiar with the use of the device.
Vfhat I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a drum, an opening at the bottom of said drum for the admission of combustion products, a. deilector mounted in said drum above said opening and extending outwardly and inwardly therein, said drum having lateral openings therein above the bottom of said deflector and below the top of the drum. and also lateral openings below said detleotor, a Cover mounted on said drinn and extending` over said openings and deiecto-r, said device provided with openings between said Cover and drum.
2. In combination with the device specified in claim l, a detachable connection between the cover and the drum.
3. In combination with a device such as that specified in claim l, a detachable connection between the delector and the drum.
1i. ln the combination specified in claim l, said drinn having` a vertical flue member eX- tcndinp; from a point near the betteln of the drinn to a point near the top thereof below said cover.
5. In the combination sneciiied in claim l, a hood on the cover, said cover being' providedwvith an opening beneath said hood, and said hood extending laterally.
6. Tn a device of the character described,
a. drum, an opening at the bottom of said druln for the admission of combustion products, a deec-tor mounted in said drum above said opening` and extendingoutwardly and upwardly therein, said drum having,` lateral openings therein below the bottom ot said deflector and other openings therein above the bottom of said delector, and said de 'Hector being spaced at its upper part from said drum to provide passages 'for heat therebetween, a cover mounted on said drum and extending' thereover, the device being' provided with other openings for the exit ot heat passing above the spaces between the said deflector and drum.
