GUARDQRAIL STRUCTURE.
Application .sied May 15,
` The present invention relates to guard railsV for railways and has for its object to produce aV guard rail structure adapted` to be moreec'onomically manufactured and Y to possess other important advantages over the types of guard rail structures as at present employed.
A characteristic and important feature of my improved guard rail construction consists in an improved design thereof wherein the guard rail proper and its supporting base are formed as an integral structure of `a cross-section to allow of it being produced mainly by a rolling operation. The improved construction is further designed to obviate the lnecessity of employing` supplementary securing devices, such as the customarily used guard rail clamps whereby .the installationismaterially simplified and -other important advantages obtained.
The described and other features and advantages of my present invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying `drawing wherein like reference numerals are applied to corresponding parts in the several views.
"In the drawing:
Fig. 1.is a plan` view of a guard rail Vinstallation `made in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation showing the improved guard rail of Fig. 1 as rolled and prio-r to the ybending of the base p or-l tion into final position.
Fig. t is an end elevation of the structure of Fig. 1 as completed. and installed and taken on line 7 p In accordance with my present invention, the'guard rail is rolled as an integral or unitary structure having a base flange of sufficient width or` extension to underlie the track rail and provide a bearing therefor. To this end the guard rail may be rolled of a cross-section as best illustrated in Fig. 4f, wherein 20 indicates the track rail and 16 the guard railr to be secured in `the usual spaced relation thereto. The guard rail' of my improved form is rolled of the section as illustrated in Fig. 3 having the upper head portion 16, vertical web portion 17 and the base flange 19. The section as it comes from the rolls has the ange extension 19 in substantially parallel relation to the vertical axis of the rail section and the coinguard rail in its vrlhe end portions of the guard rail proper 1921i.l seriai No. 713.392.
pleted form, as shown in Fig. 4, is produced by bending or turning back of the vertical extended portion 19l of the base flange into a horizontal base 18. The bearing CoM- position underlying the raily extension flange is of such length as to underlie and receivey thereon the track'rail 2O and may furthermore and as illustrated be stamped out interinediate of the ties to lighten the struc! ture. Suitable punching is provided at 21-22 to receive the track rail securing spikes which likewise function to secure the proper spaced relation.
are suitably deformed from the rail section to provide in the finished structure outwardly iiared ends 23 having their upper' surfaces downwardly inclined; this being accomplished by a forging or pressing operation subsequent tothe rolling of the section to the form illustrated.
The guard rail thus produced is relatively inexpensive from the standpoint of commercial manufacture in that it is adapted to be produced mainly by a rolling operation and is further particularly advantageous in that its method of securing is such as to more effectively resist longitudinal pressures whereby the creeping tendency is more elfectively resisted. The provision of the guard rail and the securing and supporting plate as an integral structureoifers the important advantage of ample from the standpoint of strength and in the installation has a relative permanency which contributes largely to economy by reducingV maintenance costs.
Having described my invention I claim:
security 1. As anew article of manufacture a rolled steel guard rail section having head, web and base portions7 said base portion having aA horizontal flange extension bent nwardly into horizontal position to underlie the guard rail to provide a base supportfor the track ruil, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture a rolled steel guard rail section having head, web and base portions, said base portion having a. horizontal flangel extension bent inwardlyV into horizontal position to underlie the guard rail section and at its outer end to provide a base support for the track rail, said iiange extension having punched out portions spaced with relation to the section and at its outer end Y fl ed 1,0m
ties, and said guard rail Section having iis upper'portion deformed to have outwardly flared and downwardly inclined end portions.
3. The herein described method of producing a guard rail Structure which consists in rolling a guard rail section having head, web and base portions with the base portion having a lange extension substantially in parallel relation to the web and to eompleie sai-d Structure by bending said flange extension into horizontal position to underlie the hase portion and deioiining the upper portion of the rolled section by forging to provide outwardly flared and downwardly inclined end portions, substantially as described.
