l'li'his invention relates to the cylindrical platens of typewriting machines, which ordi-V made of Isoft rubber, that upon being struck 'by the type-bars it would be apt to yield with or bend bodily, the result that no im pression or a blurred one would be made on the work-sheet, and to overcome the objection due to the flexibility of the soft coreless platen', the constant use of which would tend to warp or distort it and render it in ethcient. These objections are taken care of in the present invention by providing the platen with a support which bears at a point against the platen opposite where the blows are` struclby the type-bars, vsaid support preferably in the form of a metal shield or shoe, thel curvature of which conforms to the curvature' of the platen and extends preferably the whole length thereof. rhe shielfdnniy encompass the plat-en for about one-third of its circumference; Said 'shield may be rigid'lyrsuspended'from the paperengaging' linger-guide-rod of the machine, and, although engaging the eXteriorrof the platen, will permit the platen to' rotate freely.
