J. W. HOFFMAN STEERING WHEEL HOLDING DEVICE Fild July 26. 1926 INVENTOR.
A TTORNE Y.
Patented Mar. 29, 1927.
JOHN W. HOFFMAN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
STEERING-WHEEL HOLDING DEVICE.
Application filed July 26,
This invention aims to provide a steering wheel holding device by which such articles as maps, strips of matches, order books and the like can be supported on a steering wheel in front of a driver.
It is an object of the invention to provide a steering wheel holding device which can, be cheaply made and easily applied without defacing the steering wheel in any way.
Another object of the invention is to p'ro vide a holding device consisting solelyof one substantially V-shaped piece having projecting margins adapted to be flexed around adjacent spokes of a steering wheel, and having inwardly bent members to hold the sides and bottom of the article to be supported thereby. Moreover an. outwardly projecting transverse strap substantially central of the device is also provided to receive the tab on the back of the article to be supported.
Having thus briefly outlined the major purposes of the invention I will now proceed to describe an embodiment thereof with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l illiistrates the invention in position on a steering wheel.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 are sections on the lines 1III,-IIIIII and IV-IV of Figure 1.
Figure 5 shows a view of the invention with a book mounted therein, and
Figure 6 depicts the invention being used to support a strip of matches. I
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the holding device which consists of a substantially V-shaped plate having sides 2 with rojecting portions 3. The latter must be su ciently pliable to be bent downwardly and inwardly around two adjacent spokes 4 of a steering wheel 5, and the lower end of the plate should be in proximity to the junction between these two spokes. The upper edge 6 of the plate is preferably curved to conform to the radius of the steering wheel and is spaced a suflicient .distance.
therefrom to allow room for the drivers fingers between it and the inner radius of the wheel. This outer edge is usually doubled over as shown in Figures 1 and 2 to 1926. Serial No. 124,825.
Towards the centre of the plate are two parallel transverse slots 11, and between them is a forwardly bent strap 12. This latter is provided to receive a tab 10 as shown on the back of the book 8 or the strip of matches 10 to afl'ord additional holding smaller articles as the strip of matches which is not wide enough to be held by the clips 7.
The central portion of the plate is genmeans, and is primarily intended for such.
erally slightly depressed, firstly to form a nest into which the article supported by the plate may sink so that it will not be so easily raised out of its place by wind, and, secondly, the depressed form provides downward surfaces 1 to bear against the opposed inner surfaces of the spokes 4: so that the plate will be more-readily and more securel held in position.
\Vhile in the foregoing the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and shown it is understood that the con- I struction is susceptible to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims. g
- What I claim as my invention and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described consisting of a substantially v shaped plate adapted to rest on two adjacent spokes of a steering wheel and having projecting portions adapted to be flexed around said spokes, said plate being de ressed centrally of its width so that said epressed portion is adapted to nest between said spokes, said plate having its outer edge in the form of an arc, inbent marginal projections integral with said plate between the outer edge and said projecting portions, and an inbent marginal projection between said projecting and said plate having two transverse slots portions. and an outwardly flexed strap between said 2. A device of the character described conslots, said strap being integral with said 10 sisting of a plate having flexible projections plate, said marginal projections and said adapted to be bent around adjacent spokes strap being adapted to hold an article on of a steering wheel, said plate having marsaid plate. ginal projections bent back over said plate, JOHN W. HOFFMAN.
