I LIQUID-DISPENSING APPARATUS.

My invention relates to improvements in liquid dispensing apparatus, particularly adapted for outdoor use.
One object 01 the invention is to provide a complete measuring pump apparatus in a permanently closed casing, instead of a casing which must be opened before the pump can be used.
Another object of my invention is to utilize the enclosing casing as a mounting frame for the operating mechanism.
Another object of my invention is to provide a structure pleasing and ornamental in appearance without sacrificing utility or convenience. Am le advertising space is also provided on t e casing.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sturdy pump structure of minimum weight.
Another object of my invention is to provide a pumping apparatus the interior mechanism of which is readily accessible for adjustment or repair; and which it is very convenient to assemble and reassemble.
Another object of my invention is to protect purchasers of liquid therefrom against false measurement, by securely enclosing adjustable parts and ofiiclal seals against unauthorized persons, and by providing safeguards against authorized operators who would be inclined to dishonestly manipulate such pumps.
lVith these and other objects in mind, the invention consists in a tubular casing enclosing the pump cylinder, upon which rests the flanged top cylinder head; a rack-enclosing tubular casing resting upon and supported by the flanged cylinder head; a flanged gear plate resting upon and supported by the rack casing; a tubular light post and counter mechanism and meter housing resting upon and supported by said flanged gear plate, and the rack driving mechanism adapted to this design.
My invention is shown in the best form known to me, in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to the drawings, the casing of the liquid dispensing mechanism, or measuring pump, is formed of the lower section A, which encloses the pump cylinder, cylinder head, etc., an intermediate section A which encloses the rack, stop mechanism, driving mechanism, etc., another intermediate section A which encloses the counter and meter mechanism and forms the lamp post, and an upper section A which forms the lamp enclosure.
The section of the casing A has a door a to afford access to the electric conduit box 6' and the union p, hereinafter more fully described. This section of the casing is preferably cylindrical and made of suitable sheet metal, and rests upon and is secured to the base flange 0?. Upon its top rests the flange of the top cylinder head 0 and the pump cylinder C is securely held between this head 0 and the bottom cylinder head 0 by tie rods 0 in the usual manner; while the liquid supply pipe P is secured to the bottom cylinder head by the union p. The top cylinder head 0 is secured to the casing element A by tie-rods 0 A piston 0*, piston rod 0 stuffing box 0 and rack c are all of any usual or convenient type. A filter screen cup 0 may be supplied in the top cylinder head, preferably with a clean-out plate 0 and with the discharge pipe 0 provided with valve 0 leading to the overhead venting drain valve 0 A draw-off cock 0 is provided to drain ofl' waste liquid or solid matter kept back by the filter from the filter pocket in the top cylinder head.
The intermediate section A of the casing is preferably made of suitable sheet metal in the form of a flattened tube, and for appearance sake may have its edges rounded and its sides at the edges formed as a rounded bead. i rests upon the top cylinder head, and after the gear plate E is placed on the top of A said parts are held securely in position by tie rods 0.
Within the casing section A is a stop rod Dsubstantially parallel with the rack 0 with stops d, d, d (Z and a? thereon, and each of said stops is adapted to be rotated by apull-rod (Z so as to bring it in line with the lug c on the rack 0 in any usual or suitable manner for delivering the measured quantity of liquid desired. A washer 0 and set screw 0 limit the downward movement of the rack. A signal S is pivoted to-a stationary part of the pump mechanismso as to be adapted to be seen through the'window a in section A of the casing whenth lug c on the rack 0 engages the lever s, when the rack and piston are in their lowest position shown in Fig. 4. A cover plate a affords access to the stop mechanism and seals, (Z and a cover plate a affords access to the stuffing box 0 -On the underside of the gear plate E are webs 8, 6 in which are journalled the driving shaft F, and the driven shaft 7 of the driving mechanism. This mechanism for driving the rack c unpwardly for pumping, and downwardly to return the piston to pumping position again, may be of any usual orconvenient form. The one shown consists of a driving shaft F adapted to have axial movemen with loose gear f thereon always in mesh with rack c and gear f -rotatable with the shaft 7 and always in mesh with said rack; a loose gear f on shaft F always in mesh with gear 7 fixed to shaft 7; a handle for rotating the shaft F; a clutch f on the inner hub of gear 7, and another 7" on the inner hub of gear f adouble clutch member f fixed to the shaft Fbctween said clutches f and j and adapted to engage either of them, and a spacing sleeve 7 enclosing all said clutches. A roller 7 on pin 7, journalled in webs 011 gear plate E, holds the rack c in engagement with the gear f Thesection 2 of the casing, preferably made of suitable sheet metal, has on its lower part, preferably on either side thereof, a dial plate G, preferably held in position by screws, and a dial A pointer g for each dial is driven and controlled by any usual or suitable mechanism, the one shown herein being the subject of a separate patent application and is not herein described further than to state that it is driven from a pinion f -fixed to the end of the driven shaft 7.
Above the dials gg are reflectors an -a with electric lights b b adapted to keep tions A, A and A in which last, branches lead off to the lights b b and terminates in the globe section A for supplying current to the light N, which is also supplied with an encasing glass b.
All the mechanism in sections A and A 'of the casing are assembled, then the rackdriven mechanism is assembled on the under side and the meter and counter-driving mechanism on the upper side of the. gear plate E, which is then placed in position andsecured there by the nuts on thetie-rods 0. Then the section A of the'casing is placed in position and securely held there by cap-screws a. The upper or lampenclosing section A of the casing is seated upon and secured to the section A by thumb-screws al A lock L, seated in a stationarypart of the apparatus readily accessible to the operator, has a bolt Z adapted to seat in a hole f in a suitable part of the gear 7, preventingthe operation ofthe pump by securing the whole rack-driving mechanism against rotation.
Obviously many changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I claim as within the-scope of my invention any mechanism readable upon the claims finally allowed in this application.
I claim as my invention and desirevto secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A measuring pump having in combination, a pump cylinder, a closed tubular housfor said cylinder, a rack, stop mechanisln, a section of tubular housing for said rack and stop mechanism, driving mechanism, a substantially horizontal gear-plate to which the driving mechanism is secured seated upon the section of housing enclosing said rack and stop mechanism, and means for holding said housing sections and plate in fixed relation.
2. a measuring pump having in combination, a closed tubular housing composed of horizontally divided sections, and a substantially horizontal gear-plate to which the driving mechanism is secured, said plate iecured between two of said housing secions.
8. In a service pump, a pump section casing and two superposed enclosing casings aligned with and secured to the pump section casing, the last two casing sections being separated by a horizontal plate perforated to allow passage of the pump rack to the casing section, and means carried by the plate to actuate the rack.
4. In a measuring pump having a rackactuated piston, a casing for said pump 1 formed of a plurality of sections, a substantially horizontal plate between the two casing sections perforated to allow reciprocation of said pump rack, rack-actuating means carried by said plate, and means for rigidly securing together said casing sections and plate.
