UNITED STATES PATENT QFF ICE.
THEOPHIELD D. OAKLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOE, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO DEFIANCE SALES CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
ran REST.
Application filed. Ju1y'10, 1922. :Serial ivo. 57i.,'0a1.
My invention has reference more particularly to a rest or support for use in connection with desk or calendar pad stands to hold the open leaves in an upraised position, said rest being designed particularly for use in connection with a desk pad and stand such as shown and. described in my application, Serial No. 552,799, filed April 14, 1922, although it is not necessarily limited to such use.
In desk or calendar pad stands wherein the leaves are arranged to turn over endwise, it is sometimes desirable that the open leaves lie down fiat, particularly when the stand is used on a double desk, and at other times it is desirable that the open leaves may be held upraised so as to be in View of a person at the front of the stand.
The principal objects of my invention are to provide a rest or support whereby the open leaves of a desk or calendar pad may be optionally laid down flat on the supporting base or held in an upraised position thereon; to provide a rest of this character which is detachable or otherwise arranged so that it is not in the way when the leaves of the pad are laid down flat; and in general, to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment for a pad holder whereby the latter may be easily adapted to support the leaves flat or in an upraised position.
On the drawings:
Fig. 1 shows a top view of a pad and stand with my invention applied thereto, and with parts broken away to disclose details of the construction;
Fig. 2, a side View of the stand and pad as shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, a perspective View of the pad rest, and
Fig. 4, a fragmentary top View of the stand showing the manner of applying the rest thereto.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numerals 1 and 2 indicate oppositely inclined sections of the stand which are arranged end to end and connected together by a pair of staples 3 which have their ends secured respectively in vertical apertures of the sections 1 and 2 and retained therein by a locking plate 4, in accordance Withthe invention of my pending application above referred to. The pad is shown partly open, the main portion 5 thereof being supported directlyionthe section 2-and theopen portion 6 supportedon the rest 7, which latter holds the open leaves in an,upraised position so as to be visible to and convenient to be written upon by a person at the front of the stand. The leaves 5 and 6 are apertured 1n the usual manner so as to be engaged upon the staples 3 and thereby held in place in both positions.
The rest 7 in the present form of the device is made detachable so that it may be removed and the open leaves laid down fiat upon the stand section 1 as indicated by dotted lines at 8, and comprises a plate bent to afford angular portions 9 and 10, the former of which serves as a rest for the leaves 6 and the latter of which serves as a brace to hold the plate portion 9 in the required upraised position. The plate 9 is preferably of a width slightly greater than the distance between the staples 3 and at the outer end is formed with notches 11 at the opposite sides to engage the staples 3 for holding the rest 7 in place.
To mount the rest on the stand it isetilted laterally as indicated in Fig. 4, so that the outer end which is somewhat wider than the distance between the staples 3 may be inserted therebetween, and as the notches 11 come in alignment with the staples 3 the rest is turned down, and the notches 11 thereby caused to engage and interlock with the staples, and the rest then drops down on to the section 1 into the position shown in Fig. 2.
The plate portion 9 of the rest may be slotted if desired as indicated at 12, to afford flexibility to the slotted end of the plate 9, and the rest may be constructed and mounted in place otherwise than as shown. For example, with the illustrated type of stand employing the detachable posts 3, the rest 7 may, if desired, be provided with apertures instead of the notches 11 through which the corresponding ends of the posts 3 may be inserted in assembling the stand.
While I have shown and described my invention in a preferred form, I am aware that various changes may be made without departing from the principles of my invention, the scope of which is to be determined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a pad stand having oppositely inclined sections with intermediate staples for holding pad leaves on one of the sections so that the leaves turn over on to the other section, of an attachment adapted to detachably interlock with the staples for holding the leaves in an up raised position above the latter section.
2. The combination with a pad holder having staples intermediate of the ends for holding a plurality of leaves in superposed relation on the portion of the stand at one side of the staples so that they are adapted to be turned over on to the portion of the stand at the other side of the staples, of a rest adapted to be mounted on the latter mentioned portion of the stand and having a detachable interlocking connection with the staples for supporting the leaves in an elevated position on the latter mentioned portion of the stand. a
3. The combinationwith a pad holder having staples intermediate of the ends for holding a plurality of leaves in superposed relation on the portion of thestand at one side of the staples so that they are adapted to be turned over on to the portion of the stand at the other side of the staples, of an angular member having notches at opposite sides thereof adjacent one end adapted to be detachably engaged and interlockedwith u the staples so as to be maintained thereby in position to support the leaves on the latter mentioned portion of the stand in an 1113- raised position.
