A CORPORATION or MISSOURI.
SCOT-BLOWING APPARATUS FOR WATER-TUBE BOILERS.
Application filed July 24,
This invention relates to soot blowers for water tube boilers of the type that comprise steam jet nozzles that project towards or into the tube bank through hollow stay bolts in the water legs and which are connected by means of pipe reducers to headers that are attached to a part of the boiler, the headers usually being held in place byclamps on the hand hole plates.
In conventional soot blowers of the type mentioned the pipe reducers that carry the nozzles are arranged in such a way as to act as closures for the outer ends. of the stay bolts so as to prevent the entrance of air through the stay bolts, but, on account of the variations in the stay bolts and nozzles, the pipe reducers seldom engage the stay bolts tightly enough to form satisfactory closures for the stay bolts. Accordingly, it is necessary to wrap asbestos wicking around the nozzles so as to prevent air from leaking in through the annular spaces between the steam jet nozzles and the stay bolts in which the nozzles are positioned, thereby adding considerably to the cost of installing the soot blowing apparatus, and moreover, resulting in a structure that is. crude and imperfect from a mechanical standpoint.
The object of our invention is to provide a soot blowing apparatus for water tube boilers which is equipped with stay bolt closures that can be easily adjusted and moved into sufiiciently snug engagement with the outer ends of the stay bolts through which the .steam jet nozzles project to prevent the entrance of air through said stay bolts.
' Figure lof the drawings is a longitudinal sectional view of a water tube boiler equipped with a soot blowing apparatus constructed in accordance with our invention;
and I 1 Figure 2 is a detail View illustrating one of the steam jet nozzles and the adjustable device that serves as a closure for the outer end of the stay bolt through which said nozzle projects.
In the drawings, A designates one of the I water legs of a water tube boiler, B designates hollow stay bolts arranged in said water leg and C designates steamjet nozzles that project through said stay bolts and which are used to dislodge and remove soot 1924. Serial No. 727,918.
and the like that collects on the watertubes of the boiler, Each group of nozzles C is connected to a steam supply header D, thus 5 forming a structure, which, as an entirety, is retained in position by any suitable means,
such, for example, as a clamp E fastened tov a part of the water leg A. Following the usual practice, each of the nozzles G is oined' to its co-operating header by a pipe reducer F, as shown in Figure 2. Instead of using the pipe reducers as closures for the outer ends of the stay bolts, and then wrapping asbestos wicking around the nozzles so as to prevent the entrance of air through the stay bolts, as has heretofore been the usual practice, we provide our improved soot blowing apparatus with adjustable stay'bolt closures' Gr that are adapted to be moved into engage ment with the outer ends of the stay bolts B, as shown in Figure 2, so as to close same,
after the complete structure consisting of the header D andtnozzles C, has been installed. After said structure has been arranged in operative position, but before the header D of said structure is secured to the water leg, the closures G are adjusted so as to move the same into engagement with the outer ends of the stay bolts; Thereafter, the header is clamped in operative position by means of the clamp E, and if the operation of clamping the header D in position. has re'sultedin some of the closures G pulling away from their co-operating stay bolts,
said closures are then adjusted so as to bring them into sufliciently snug engagement with their co-operating stay bolts to prevent the entrance of air through the stay bolts.
The particular form of the stay bolt closures G and the manner of adjusting same are immaterial, so far as our invention is concerned, and while we have hereinillustrated the stay boltclosures as consisting of collars adjustably mounted on externally screw-threaded portions 1 of the nozzles C closures might be formed by elements slidingly mounted on the nozzles or by elements adjustably mounted on the pipe reducers F that carry the nozzles.
Having thus desoribed'our invention, What We claim asneW and'desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
-l. Ina Water tube boiler, thecombination of alholloW stay bolt, a steam jet nozzle that projects inwardly through said stay bolt, a steam supply header, a pipe reducer that joins said nozzle to said header, means for preventing said header from moving with respect to the end of the stay bolt, and an adjustable closure for the stay bolt arranged between the pipe reducer and the stay bolt and adapted to be adjusted independently of said reducer and said'bolt so as to force-said projects inwardly through said stay bolt, a
steam supply header, means-for, preventing said header from moving with respect to the end of the stay bolt, a pipe redueer'tha t joins said nozzle to said header, and a tapered closure for the stay bolthadjustably mounted on anexternally screw-threaded portion of the nozzle and adapted to be adjusted into snug engagement With the outer end of the stay bolt.
