Description

March 15,1927. 1,620,743 L. STUART PROTECTOR Filed Dec. 9, 19,25
I INVENTOR (/41. MN STU/4197 Maw.
' ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 15, 1927.
UNITED STATES LILLIAN STT J'ART, OF YORK, N. Y.
- rnornccron.
Application filed December 9, 1925. Serial No. 74,296.
My invention relates to an improvement I in foot and leg protectors and has for one of its objects the provision of a coveringwhich will extend from the foot to and above the knee, and yet which may be readily applied or removed.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a foot and leg covering or pro-' tector which when applied will be glove fitting, so as to .have the appearance of a stocking, as distinguished from gaiters and such devices now on the market.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device such as above described which will be waterproof, so as to protect .the feet and legs of the wearer against the elements, it being understood that my improved device is to be worn over tlge shoe. and stocking and not next to the s 1n. 1 1
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is constructedv of very thin extensible imaterial, 'such as the rubber from which surgeons gloves are made, so as to enable the device to be pulled over the shoe and about the le to snugly fit the same, the material pre erably being made up in different colors, so as tohave the appearance of a stocking.
A still further object of invention is the provision of a shoe and leg covering of very thin waterproof flexible material lined with cotton, wool, silk, or some other suitable materia'h'which will not only be waterproof but which will have a certain degree of warmth besides. 1
Another object of my invention is the provision of a shoe and leg covering made so as to fully cover'the shoe as well as the leg, the device being constructed inonepiece and opening down the side or other convenient location, so as to permit of the same being applied to the'shoe and leg, and provided with a quick closing or locking device .which when operated will draw the covering snugly about'the leg and retain it in such position.
In general,Ihave provided a new and novel device, extremely simple in construction,
neat in appearance, and yet at the same time practicable so far as the consumer is concernedf I Wish it to be distinctly understood that the present device is not to be confused with overshoes, goloshes, gaiters, spats, and such devices, which in some cases are not waterproof and, which in all cases areheavy, bulky, and more or less unsightly.-
The present device is intended to have the appearance of a stocking, although waterproof, and to extend above the knee, and to be of such a nature, so far as bulk is concerned, as to enable the same to be carried in a ladys bag, for instance, when not in use.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein my invention has been illustrated in practical form,
Fig. 1' shows my invention in elevation in use and in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, With the device partly open; and
Fig. 3 is anelevational fragmentary view showing a modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, and first of all-to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 designates a strip of very thin waterproof flexible material, such as the rubber or composition mate rial from which surgeons gloves are made, for example, shaped to provide a covering or protector for the shoe, ankle and leg to and above the knee, that portion of the pro tector covering the shoe and ankle being designated 2, the portion covering the leg between the ankle and knee being designated 3, and the portion covering the knee and above the knee being designated 4.
In this form of my device I provide a strap or stirrup 5 at the bottom of the protector and integral therewith, if desired, which when the device is in use lies beneath the shoe at the instep, as designated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The protector is lined as indicated at 6 with any suitable thin but flexible material,
such as cotton, wool or silk, or other material so woven or fabricated as to yield with the material 1 of the outside of the protector.
7 designates a fastening device of a well known character, attached alon the adjacent edges of the opening 8, w ich in the present instance has been shown down the side of the protector from top to bottom. This fastening device is provided, as is usual, with a cam member 9, slidable along the member 7, this member as it is drawn 105 from bottom to top drawing the edges of the protector about the shoe and leg and locking it in such position.
, At the top of the protector I provide a tie member 10, if desired, which may be threaded through a loop 11, also at the top of the device, as an auxiliary to the cam member 9.
The material of which my improved device is constructed may be made in any color desired,'so as to match the costume, for example, and being extensible, will providea glove fitting garment which when in use will bepractically indistinguishable from a stocking.
It will be seen, therefore, that I have provided a protector composed of extensible waterproof material which by reason of its extensibility Will conform snugly and neatly to the foot and leg, and hence present a neat appearance, in fact, have the appearance of a well fitting stocking.
It will be seen, also, that by providing the quick lockin the article may due slipped on and off instantly, and by reason of the extreme flexibility and pliability of the article, the same when not in use may be folded or rolled into a very small compact package, which may be slipped-into the pocket or carried in a ladys hand bag.
The article illustrated in Fig. is similar to the article above described, providing in addition, however, an integral sandal 12 deviceabove referred to made of the same material asthat composing the upper part of the protector. In all other respects this article is the same as the article of Figures 1 and 2.
lVhilc I have described a specific embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the details of construction may be varied by those skilled in this art withln the purview of my invention. For example,
the opening in the protector need not be down the side, as illustrated, butimay be otherwise located to suit the demands of the public. The fastening means may be changed also from that illustrated, although any type of fastener employed should be terial shaped to conform tothe leg, and an extensible liningfor said member.
This'specification signed this 8th day of December, 1925.
LILLIAN STUART.
