This invention relates to new anduseiul imrnovementsV in locomotive driving boxes.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a loco-'motive drive boX of such a construction that the act of renewing wearable parts thereof may be classed with the light work repairs insteadgot being in the heavy work yclass as heretofore. y

hans-ers 1o which has lili) Illustrated in detail in Figs. 7 and 8 is the substantially inverted U-shaped removable outer liange 22 which has formed on its inner edge an inverted U-shaped rib 23 which extends the entire length of the said edge and is of a suitable size to be snugly received within the groove 15 formed in the reduced end portion of the body 13 of the driving box. This removable outer flange 22 is further provided with a laterally projecting, lateral wearing face 24 which conforms in shape generally with the shape of the flange 22 and rib 23. Carried by the upper portion of the inner face of this liange 22 is a horizontally elongated boss 25 which has formed in its upper face a longitudinally extending saddle 26.
l/Vhen the various parts are assembled, it will be noted that the wear shoes 12 are received upon the pedestal frame legs 5a and the body portion 13 of the driving box is arranged therebetween and 'in engagement therewith, the length of the space 6 between the legs 5a permitting, however, vertical sliding movement of the box between the upper portion of the pedestal frame 5 and the pedestal binder 7. The inner, integral flange 14 on the box body 13 will prevent outward removal of the box from the pedestal frame, and the positioning of the outer flange 22 with its rib 23 received within the groove 15 will prevent the inward movement of the driving box in respect to the pedestal frame. The bearing brass 19 is properly arranged between the inner face of the body of the box and the lubricant cellar 21 may then be properly located. To retain the vcellar 21 in position and to prevent unintentional removal of the flange 22, a transversely extending locking pin or bolt 27 is passed through suitable openings formed in the lower ends of the flange 22, and the body portion 13 of the driving box and also through the lower portion of the lubricant cellar 21 and is retained in place by any suitable means, such as a cotter vpin 28.
It will be noted that when the removable flange 22 is assembled in respect to the body portion 13 of the driving box, the rib 23 will be received within the flange 15 of the box and the horizontal elongated boss 25 will snugly lit within the horizontally elongated pocket 18 formed in the body portion 13. In Figs. 3 and 5, the lower ends of the spring saddle are illustrated as respectively resting in the saddle seats 16 and 26 of the body portion 13 and boss 25. The weight of the locomotive, not illustrated, upon the spring saddle 8 will further aid in preventing unintentional removal of the flange 22 in view of the fact that the saddle 8 rests `directly upon the boss 25 of this flange.
The manner of renewing the various wearable'parts of the driving box embodying this invention will now be described. When it becomes necessary to renew a bearing brass or Wear shoes, the weight of the locomotive upon the spring 9 and saddle 8 should be removed and the said spring and saddle shifted to free the saddle from its position upon the driving box and liange boss 25. 'Ihe locking pin or bolt 27 should then be removed which will permit the withdrawal downwardly of the lubricant cellar,
21. The outer removable flange 22 should then be withdrawn vertically after which the driving box may be shifted laterally inwardly along the driving axle 20, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The box may then be easily disconnected from the axle 2O by merely lifting the same vertically. In Fig. 4 the simple manner of removing the wear shoes 12 is clearly illustrated and is made possible after the drivebox has been shifted laterally inwardly along the axle 20. The manner of assembling these various elements to return the locomotive to an operative condition will, of course, be clearly understood from the drawings and above detail description.
The removable flange 22 has been described as possessing an integrally formed laterally extending, lateral wearing face 24.
'This wearing face is intended to receive the lateral thrust and wear caused by the engagement therewith of the drive wheel 29. The wearing away of this face 24 will of course make necessary the renewal of the same. Such renewal may be easily accomplished by merely withdrawing the locking pin or bolt 27, after the weight of the locomotive has been removed from the spring 9 and saddle 8, and the flange 22 with the said surface 24 removed for permitting metal to be deposited, as by a welding operation or the like, upon the surface 24 for building up the same to a proper thickness. The said surface may then be-planed and the flange is ready to be replaced.
It is now believed that the construction and manner of assembling the various elements embodying this invention and the advantages derived from constructing and assembling the same in the manner described will be readily understood and appreciated from the above detail description. It is to be understood, however, that the form of this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the. subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. In a device of the type described, a drive box, an integral flange at one end thereof, the remaining end of the box being of reduced inverted U-shape and having an unbroken groove formed across the top and down the full length of both sides thereof, the top of the main portion of the box having a horizontally elongated pocket provided therein with the intermediate portion of its vbottom Wall formed as an extension of the bottom Wall of the top part of said groove and with the ends projecting laterally of these registering Walls, and a removable flange carried by the reduced end of the box, said removable flange having a continuous rib received in the groove and a horizontally elongated boss received in said pocket and extending the full length of the same, the tops of the drive box and the horizontally elongated boss having spring saddle receiving seats formed therein.
2. In a device of the type described, a Nl drive box, an integral flange at one end thereof, the remaining end of the box being of reduced inverted U-shape and having an unbroken groove formed across the top and` down both sides thereof, the top of the main portion of the box having a horizontal pocket provided therein with its bottom Wall formed as an extension of the bottom Wall of the top part of said groove, and a removable fiange carried by the reduced end of the box, said removable fiange having a continuous rib received in the groove and a horizontal boss received in said pocket, the top of the boss having a spring saddle receiving seat formed therein.
