tools such as trowels and hand-cultivators wherein pressure on the handle-end is frequently the tool.

The object of the invention is to provide a hand tool of the trowel or cultivator type with an integrally-formed tubular handle and to provide that tubular handle with an end guard flap of a novel form and against which the hand may seat with comfort when applying end-thrust or pressure to the tool.

As the invention resides mainly in the formation of the tubular handle it is immaterial just what form the tool proper may have except that the utility of the invention lies in the fact that when the hand of the manipulator applies end-thrust to the tool the pressure of the hand at the end of the tool may be applied without discomfort.

In the structure disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive in the drawin I have shown a tool having the form 0 a hand trowel wherein the body-part 6 of the tool proper is somewhat of a scoop-shape in that it is concave in cross-section.

The blank from which this trowel-form of tool is roduced is shown in Fig. 2, wherein the too portion 7 of the blank is located at one end while the handle-portion 8 of the blank is located at the opposite end of said blank,the limits of said two portions being determined by the side notches 9, which produces a narrowed neck 10, between said two portions.

the form of a tube that tapers and enlarges slightly from the neck to the end 12 of the handle. The handle obviously is formed integrally with the tool and has a longitudinal butt-seam 13 along its under side.

By preference, I also provide the opposite edges of the handle-portion 8 of the blank with slight semi-circular notches 14, so that when the tubular handle is formed those notches will register at the butt-seam and produce a circular opening 15, in the completed handle by which the tool may be I hung upon a nail or hoo y reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing it Wlll be noted that the handle-end of the blank has a central elongation or projection 16 which, when said end is rolled into tubular form, as in Fig. 1, makes that side of the handle longer than the opposite side so that the longer portion may be bent and worked over the end of the handle to form a convex guard flap. This convex guard flap therefore will project over but will be spaced from the open large end of the tubular handle and, being rounded, will seat in the palm of the hand so that the pressure of the hand may be directed against it when end-thrust is desirable in the manipulation of the tool.

The end guard flap is therefore formed integrally with the handle portion of the tool and curves over but is spaced from said end and it is particularly to be noted that the guard is joined to or projects from that circumferential side of the tubular handle which will be exposed from the upper side of the tool during the manipulation of the latter. In other words, when the tool is being operated the concave side of the bodypart 6, will be the front or upper side and the guard flap 17 curves from that same front or upper side of the handle so that its free edge 18, will project or face toward the rear or under side where the seam 13 is located.

In the structure disclosed in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the handle end. 19 is precisely the same as in the structures of Figs. 1 and 3 but the body part 20, has a series of claws 21 formed thereon to produce a hand cultivator tool instead of a trowel.

Having described my invention, I claim,-

1. A hand tool having a tool-portion with a tubular handle extending laterally thererom said tubular handle having a longitudinal seam extendin to the outer end and at a point diametrical y opposite the scam the extreme end of said tubular handle being made longer than the remainder thereof so as to provide material to form an end flap, -said end flap extending over the open end and across the axis of the tubular handle and lying in ar erosswise position spaced beend the outer end of the longitudinal andle-seam and also spaced beyond the rear edge of the shorter end portion of the handle-end.

2. A hand tool having a tool portion w1th a tubular handle which at its outer end is shorter around a portion of its circumferential end edge than the remaining portion thereof,the tubular handle having a side seam whose outer end terminates at the shorter end-edge portion and the longer portion at the said end being bent laterally 1n a plane spaced from and beyond the shorter edge-portion and forming a single guard flap beyond the said shorter circumferential edge portion.
