Description

March 8 1927 G. H. DONALDSON NIPPLE FOR NURSING BOTTLES Filed July 6. 1926 gwuentb'o side. This teathas the commonly approved Patented Mar. 8,1927.
GEORGE H. DONALDSON, OF WEST HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
\ NIPPLE FOR NURSING BOTTLES.
Application filed July 6, 1926. Serial No. 120,577.
This invention relates to those nipples which are attached to the mouths of bottles from which liquid food is served to babies,
and particularly such nipples as are adapted for attachment to wide mouth bottles, although of course it may be made in sizes which will fit small mouth bottles.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and readily cleaned nipple which can be easily applied to or removed from the bottle neck and which has a teat that is soft for and can be conveniently applied to the rubber, of a size that will tightly fit the neck of the bottle which is to beused, and extending the soft teat with the feeding hole obliquely with relation to the axis of the bottle from the top and near one side" of the body of the nipple. The body is also pro vided with. a protuberance having an air perforation, which protuberance extends angularly from the side ofthe body opposite the feeding teat near'the rim, which rim, adjacent to the protuberance, has a tab that facilitates the application to and removal from the bottle of the nipple.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 shows a section of a nipple that embodies the invention, applied to the upper end of a wide mouth nursing bottle. Fig. 2 shows an ele vation of the-same.
The cap-shaped body 1 of, the nipple which is generally circular in outline has an inwardly extending rib 2 around its rim which rib is of a size and shape to extend under and tightly grasp the bead 3 around the mouth of the bottle 4. The feeding teat 5 with a perforation 6 at its tip is arranged to project from the top of the body near one shape, and it maybe slightly thinner and I.
more flexible than the body of the nipple. The teat extending in this manner may be readily inserted into the 'mouth of the infant to be fed and being at the top and on one side and extending angular-1y with relation to the axis of the bottle, all of the food can be withdrawn from the bottle without inclining the bottom of the bottle to any substantial degree above horizontal.
Extending from the side of the body opposite the teat and near the rim is a rounded protuberance 7 having a perforation 8. This protuberanceis shown as extending substantially at right angles to the axis of the bot tle. If the bottle is filled practically full of liquid food, when it is turned over and the feeding teat presented to the infant the opening through the protuberance will be above the level of the liquid so that there will be no leakage, and as the food is withdrawn air will enter through the hole in the protuberance and permit the withdrawal of fluid without undue effort on the part of the infant. The entrance of air in this manner also eliminates the possibility ofany collapse of the nipple, consequently the nipple can be made of comparatively thin elastic or flexible material. Extending from the rim of the body adjacent to the protuberance there may be a tab 10 which affords means that can be easily grasped by the thumb and finger when the nipple is being applied to or removed from the bottle neck.
The invention claimed is A nipple formed of elastic material and adapted to be applied to the neck of a wide mouth bottle, which nipple comprises a capshaped body portion, a perforated feeding teat extending'obliquely with relation to the axis of the cap from the closed top near one edge of the body portion, a protuberance with a perforation in its end extending at right angles with relation to the axis of the cap from the body portion near the rim, at the open end on the side opposite from the feeding teat, and means extending from the edge of the body portion near the protuberance forfacilitating the application to and removal from a bottle of the nipple.
GEORGE H. DONALDSON.
