AQUARIUM.
Application filedJuneZG, 1826. serial No. 118,755.
This inventionrelates to householdaquariums of the drum or barrel type, in which the annular shell or body member receives and holds in a water tight manner the flat transparent heads or end members in parallel and separated relation. And the present improvement has for its object To provide a structural formation and association of parts of the annular plate metal body of an aquarium, whereby the fiat and transparent end heads or members are received and secured in place in a water tight condition and in a ready and substantial manner, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of an aquarium of the drum type, embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section on line 33, Fig. 2. Y
Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal section on line 4- 1, Fig. 2.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
The annular shell or body member 1 of the aquarium is formed as a split ring of plate metal, with each of its ends formed with an annular receiving channel for the reception of the marginal portion of one of the transparent end heads or members 2 of the aquarium, and with each of such channels formed by a split bead formation comprising a split out turned annular web 3, a like split annu lar intermediate web l, and a like split in turned web 5, with such parts integrally formed on the respective ends of the annular shell or body member 1, by the usual metal rolling or beading operations.
The receiving channels formed as above described, are of a size a degree larger than the size of the marginal portions of the transparent heads 2 which they are intended to receive, and so that an intermediate filling 6 of elastic packing or composition can be used as a setting for the heads 2 in the at tainment of an efiective water tight joint be tween the parts or elements.
In the described construction the annular split shell 1 is initially expanded or spread to the required diameter, to permit the mtroduction of the transparent heads 2 into aligned relation with the channels of said shell, after which the shell is allowed to contract and engage the margins of the transparent heads 2 in the receiving channels aforesaid.
In such assemblage of parts, the elastic packing 6, may be in place during the above described assembly operation, or subsequently applied as found most desirable by the manufacturer. In this connection a material feature of the invention involves means for securing the split shell or bodv member 1 in its proper contracted condition upon the transparent end heads 2. In the construction shown, such means comprises a coupling plate 7 spanning the split or parting in the split shell 1 and secured to said shell adjacent to said split by screw bolts 8 passing through orifices in both parts, with the orifice in one part adapted to register with its complementary orifice in the other part when the annular shell or body member 1, is in its properly contracted condition.
In this improvement the coupling plate 7 is formed with an orifice 9 to constitute the entry passage to the interior of the aquarium and to such end is of an open and preferably approximately elliptical ring form as shown, having any desired ornamental configuration, with its respective ends formed with pivot eyes 10 for the attachment of loop shaped rings or handles 11 for convenient handling of the aquarium.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An J aquarium comprising in combination, an annular split shell of plate metal formed with receiving channels at its respective ends, end walls of transparent material having marginal engagement in said chan-' nels, and means for securing the split shell in a contracted condition on said end walls, the same comprising a coupling plate spanning the split of the split shell and secured to the adjacent ends thereof by screw bolts, said coupling plate having an orifice constituting the entry passage to the aquarium chamber.
2. An aquarium comprising in combination, an annular split shell of plate metal formed with receiving channels at its respective ends, end walls of transparent material having marginal engagement in said channels, and means for securing the split shell in a contracted condition on said end walls, the same comprising a coupling plate of an open center and approximately elliptical form spanning the adjacent ends of the split shell with the parts secured together by screw bolts, the open center of the coupling plate constituting an entry passage to the aquarium chamber.
3. An aquarium comprising in combination, an annular split shell of plate metal formed with recelving channels at its respective ends, end walls of transparent material having marginal engagement in said chan nels, and means for securing the split shell in a contracted condition on said end Walls,
the same comprising a coupling plate of an open center and approximately elliptical form spanning the adjacent ends of the split shell with the parts secured together by screw bolts, the open center of the coupling plate constituting an entry passage to the aquarium chamber, said coupling piece having pivot ears at its opposite ends for the reception of loop shaped handles for the convenient handling of the aquarium.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 24th day of June, 1926.
