EZRA A. PERRY, JR., AND GEORGE M. DWIGHT, OF OREGON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-BLOCKS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,897, dated April 13, 1875; application led September 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EZRA A. PERRY, Jr., and GEORGE M. DWIGHT, of Oregon, Ogle county, State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buggies or Oarriages; and We do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication, in Which- Figure represents the axle, tongue, fifthwheel, or circular bearings of the metallic head-block, the brace and the metallic headblock in two pieces, divided angularly at the center. Fig. 2 represents the center part of the head-block, with its center groove half surrounding the standard. Fig. 3 represents the angular movable part of the head-block, showing the other half of the groove, in which the standard its and works. Fig. 4 represents the brace that secures the tongue with the lower part of the axle, where it is fastened by a set-screw.
The nature of my invention consists in the metallic head block in two pieces, with a groove in the center to fit closely around the standard. Y
A A represent the metallic head-block at the top of the front axle H of a carriage or buggy, having an angular piece, A, at the center, itting against the rear side or back of the head-block, thus forming two pieces,AA, connected by screw-bolts B B, and having a T-shaped groove, J in the center, corresponding with the form ot' the T-shaped standard D., in which the standard D works closely, yet easily and regularly, With the direction of the axle H. The T-shaped standard D is permanently fastened into the axle H, and has a collar, K, at its center, for the head-block A to rest and turn upon, the standard being in lieu of a coupling bolt or pin, for greater security, as the ordinary loose coupling-pins frequently wear and drop outthe cause of numerous accidents. The brace G connects the lower part of the tongue L with the lower part of the axle H. It is fastened to tongue L by tWo screws, and supports the fth-wheel or bea-rings M, a-nd is attached tothe lower part of the axle by a set-screw, E, to hold the brace.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The metallic head -block made in two pieces, AA, held together by screws B B, having a recess, O, for the spring-bolt to rest in, and having in the center a groove, J, in cornbination with the standard D, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The T-shaped standard D, fitted to and working in the corresponding groove J in the head-block A, and in combination therewith, as set forth.
EZRA A. PERRY, JR.
