U NETE ST f S PATENT OFFICE.
AUTOMATIC ENGINE STOP.
Application filed November In water elevating means and particularly where a motor driven pump is employed to lift water and supply the same to a tank, it is usually necessary to keep watch on the operation when the pump is working to prevent overflow of the tank and this necessitates attention and is frequently attendant with inconvenience and discomfort especially in inclement weather when the tank and pump are located some distance from the house.
The present invention obviates the objectionable features aforesaid and provides means for automatically stopping the pump when the tank has received the required amount of water, so that it is only necessary to start the pump and when the tank has received the predetermined supply of water, the pump is automatically thrown out of action.
While the drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements the design may be varied, and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached, in which,-
Figure 1 is an elevational view of part of the tank showing a guide and stop means associated therewith embodying the invention, and
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic view, the pump and guide being in section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in both views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 10 designates a tank which is adapted to be supplied with water from a suitable source by means of a pump 11, which may be of any make so long as it is electrically operated. A float 12 is disposed within the tank 10 and rises and falls according to the change of level of the water 18, 1925. Serial No.'69,907.
therein. A cord 13, or other suitable flexible connection, is attached at one end to the float 12 and passes over guide pulleys 14 and 15 and is attached at its other end to a weight 16 which is mounted in a suitable guide 17, conveniently positioned and preferably attached to the side of the tank 10. When the float 12 rises with the level of the water in the tank 10, the weight 16 correspondingly lowers and when the float 12 descends, as the level of the water in the tank 10 recedes, the weight 16 is correspondingly elevated by the superior weight of the float 12.
As herein before stated, the pump 11 is of the type to be electrically operated and leads 18 and 19 extend from the motor and provide for short circuiting, or grounding of the motor, whereby the pump is automatically stopped when the level of the water in the tank 10 reaches the predetermined point. The weight 16 may be of metal, such as brass or copper, and the lead 18 is connected thereto for movement therewith and the lead 19 is connected to a metal plate 20, of brass or copper, located at the lower end of the guide 17. A pointed pin or bolt 21 is fitted to the weight 16 and when the latter reaches the limit of its downward movement, the point of the pin or bolt 21 makes contact with the plate 20, thereby short-circuiting or grounding the motor of the pump 11 and causing the latter to stop.
From the foregoing it will be readily understood that the invention provides means for automatically stopping the pump after the latter has supplied the required amount of water to the tank, thereby obviating the annoyance, inconvenience and discomfort attendant upon keeping watch upon the tank and pump to prevent the tank from overflowing.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
In combination, a tank, an electrically operated pump for supplying water thereto, a guide upon the outer side of the tank, a weight directed in its movement by said guide, a float within the tank and actuated by the change of level of the water therein,
a flexible connection between the float and the pointed element of the weight, and a weight to cause both to move in unison, lead connecting said plate with the pump 10 guide pulleys receiving the flexible connecmotor, whereby upon descent of the weight, tion, the one at the top of the guide and the the motor is short-circnited or grounded otheiflat the top of the tank, a pointed ele and the pump automatically stopped.
