. Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which is operable from the insideonly, and thus will function to prevent persons from having access through the window for entrance pur- )oses. A still further very important object of the invention is to provide a window screen of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, str ng,durable, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate efficient and reliable, and otherwise well adapt- Figure 1 is an outslde elevation of the device,
- Figure Figure taken substantially .on the line of Figure 2, i a
Figure device showing a portion in section,
Figure 5 is a section through the portion of the screen proper, and
Figure 6 is a detail'perspective view of oneof the shutter ,panels. i Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 5 designates generally the frame which has i one end reduced 'as at 6 for the reception of the reduced portion 7 of an adjustable extensionB. The adjust ble extension 8 has its reduced portion 7 rovided with slots 9 for receiving bolts 10. uts 11 are associated with the bolts 10, and
, are preferably of the 2 is' an inside elevation thereof, v 3 is a vertical section therethrough.
4 is an edge view ofone end of the wing type. Slots 12 are provided reduced end 6 in registry with the slots 9, and rec'eivethe, bolts 10.
Thegwing nuts 11 are adapted to be dispo sed 1n countersunk recesses 13 in the end 6. It
willfthus be seen that the widthsioflthe,
frame may ,be adjust'edto fit the window frame snugly, and when thesenuts 11 are securely tightened, the frame is prevented from accidental removal, and, also; from ,un-
authorized removal from the outside, The frame in .its front portion; [has] hingedly I mounted ,th'erein a plurality .ofjjpanel s 14 forming a shutter structure. Each v. 4 is provided at its lower edge with-pintles15 nel ii extending beyond its ends for rotatable engagement in the sidesor ends of the frame.
The lower and upper edges of the panels are reduced as is indicated at'16 and 17 respectively, .so that the shutters may be placed in overlapping coplanar association as shown in Figure 3, at, which time, of course, the shutter structure is closed. An eye 18 is fixed in one of the free corners of each panel, and a link 19 is pivotally engaged therewith. Apertured lugs 20 are provided at'the top and bottom of the frame, and .slidably re ceive the ends of a rod 21. A spring 22 has its upper end attached to the upper portion of the frame, and its lower end attached to the upper .end of the rod 21, and normally holds this rod 21 lifted so that the links 19 which are ivoted to the rod hold the panels 14 of the sl iutter structure closed. An opening 24 is provided in one end of the frame and has ratchet teeth 25 formed along one edge thereof; An arm 26 projects from an intermediate portion of the rod 21 and is en-,
gageable with-the ratchet teeth 25 so that the rod 21 may be held in different adjusted positions for holding thepanel 14 in different adjusted open positions.
A sheet of foraminous material indicated at 28 has a channel frame'29 disposed thereabout. This frame 29 is receiva le in a seat 30 formed in the framefso as, to be flush with the adjacent face thereofl The lower" portion of the frame 29, is held in place by suitable lugs 32 while the upper side thereof is held in place by a screw 33 or in any other suitable manner. V
From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a very efficient and reliable structure which may be placed in a window frame, andcontrolled from the inside of the house, to prevent the entrance Ofunauthorized persons, and also to prevent the entrance of rain, and of course the device may be fully closed to keep out cold weather when so desired.
It will further be seen that the panels of the shutters are very easily adjusted to the desired angle when ventilation is needed.
The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will. be apparent, however, that numerous changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what I claimasnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a structure of the class described a frame, a. plurality of shutter panels hingedly mounted in the frame, links ivotally engaged with the panels, a rod shdable in the rame, said links pivotally engaged ,.with said rod, a spring fixed to said rod and said frame to maintain the shutters normally closed, said frame being provided with an opening, an arm fixed to the rod and extending through the opening, and ratchet teeth provided on one side of theopening with which the arm .is engageable, said spring normally holding said arm in en-.
gagement with the ratchet teeth through the intermediacy of said rod whereby the shutters may be maintained in different adjusted open positions.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
WILLIS B. KINNEAR.
