UNITEDSTATES PATENT OFFICE,
CHARLES B. RICKEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GARRY M. KETCHAM, JR., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.4
ADJUSTABLE DOOR JAMB.
Application lcd .Tune 9,
This Iinvention relates to adjustable door jambs, composed of metallic material, adapted for use with shower bath doors and otherwise where means of adjustment have to be resorted to for obtaining such water tight closures as are desirable or necessary, and my improvements are directed to means for simplifying the construction of these devices, besides rendering them more convenient in operation.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the provision of a female screw element, revolubly engaged with a slidable jamb element, and a male screw element in fixed relation to a stationary jamb element,
said jamb elements having interfitting relation that is adjustable through the operation of turning the female screw element upon the male screw element.
Other features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of my improved adjustable door jamb, shown in association with the wall at'one side of a door opening, and also showing a portion of a door, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In said views let 1 indicate a wall at one side of a door opening, and let 2 indicate the fixed portion of my improved door jamb.
Said fixed portion 2 is in the form of a channel having the base 3 and side walls 4, 4, and may be secured to the wall in any suitable manner, and for example as by the screws 5.
Entered within the channel 2 are a number of screws 6 whose heads 7 are countersunk in thev rear surface 8 of base 3, said screws 6, which are firmly secured to said base, projecting forwardly within the channel.
rlhe other, or adjustable member of the jamb, which is to co-act with a door, is also in the nature of a channel, co-extensive with the fixed channel 2, and is composed of the base 9 and side walls 10, 11, said walls being adapted to fit or nest slidably between the walls 4, 4. The wall 11 however is 'shown as continued forwardly beyond the base 9 to provide the flange 12, which forms an adjustable closure element or stop in co-action with a door, as will presently appear.
, respectively 1926. Serial No. 114,728.
Revolubly engaging base 9 of the slidable channel are a number of studs 13, each provided with a slotted, screw like head 14 so that it can be rotated by a screw driver. These studs are each entered and secured in a wall or flange 15 of a small channel section that has an opposite wall or flange 16 and a connecting base or web 17. For convenience the studs 13 may be threaded and thereby screwed into walls 15, but their ends may be upset or said studs otherwise prevented from withdrawal, it being my purpose that the walls 15 of the small channel sections shall be held in close revoluble relation with the base 9.
The opposite walls 16 of the small channel sections are provided with threaded apertures 18 that are axially aligned respectively witli the fixed screws 6, to have screw relation therewith.
Now it will be apparent that the extent of the forward projection of door stop or flange 12 is to be determined by the degree to which walls 16 of the small channel sections are screwed upon the fixed screws 6, because thereby the adjustable jamb element is moved either toward or from the stationary jamb element, in accordance with the extent of rotation communicated to studs 13.
Obviously it is not material as to which wall side of the door opening supports the adjustable jamb, and in the drawing it has been shown at that side where hinge connection is provided for the door.
Thus a hinge composed of pivotal leaves 19, 2O is shown as connected, by said leaves, to the base 9 of the adjustable jamb portion, and to the frame 21 of a door having the panel 22.
The studs 13 are here shown as penetrating the hinge leaf 19, thus serving to vattach the hinge to the Aadjustable element of the jamb, in addition to their other function of revolubly holding the small channel sections in their operative positions for adjustable engagement with the fixed screws 6.
Variations within the spirit and scope of my invention are equally comprehended by the foregoing disclosure.
I claim:
An adjustable jamb for doors comprising a fixed -channel element, a number of screws secured to and projected within said element, a slidable channel element in opposed interfitting relation with said fixed channelelement.,a` number of smaller ebannel sedtons each having a Webfnd opposed, spaced neiges, said flanges provided respectively with aligned orifices, one flange of each olisinel'se'otion being in'elose abuttin` 'reletion to said slidable channel element, studs' revolubly connecting the abutting llangesl of the channel Sections to said slidable ebannel, :ind'the other flangs'pf tl'ie'ehginnel sections being' tlifead'ed foi adjst'ao'l'e 'engage- Inent with the Screws projected Within the xed channel element. i; L A Executed this 4th day of June, 1926.
CHARLES B. RCKEU.
