Description
1927. Jan M. MARTINOV CURTAIN FOR AUTOMOBILE TOPS Filed May 9. 1924 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 11, 1927.
EFNETED STATES MILIVOJ MARTINOV, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
CURTAIN FOR AUTOMOBILE TOPS.
Application filed may 9, 1924. Serial No. 712,001.
This invention relates to an improvement in curtains for the sides of automobile tops, and more especially to a curtain having a removable window therein whereby a screen or wire mesh may be used for the ventilation of the car when the curtains are applied thereto.
Another object of this invention is to provide a side curtain for automobile tops that is cheapin construction and durable in service and which has interchangeable windows therein, one of the windows being of wire screen cloth and the other being of celluloid or glass.
with these and other objects in view my invention consists of the following construction of parts.
Referring to the drawing, in which similar letters and numerals refer to like parts through the several views,
Figure 1 is a fragmental view of the automobile body showing the top thereon with my invention attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a view of outside curtain 1 of my invention with inside curtain or window 6 removed.
Fig. 3 is a side view of a four-panel window showing the panels which have wire screening therein.
Fig. & is a side view of a four-panel window showing the panels which have celluloid therein.
Fig. 5 is a view on line 5-5 in Fig. 6.
Fig. 6 is a. view of a one-panel window showing wire screening therein.
Fig. 7 is a view on line 7 7 in Fig. 2, showing a lap and means for securing the window Within said curtain.
Fig. 8 is a view on line 88 in Fig. l at the bottom of curtains 1 and 6 showing the overlapping of curtain 1 at its outer side by curtain 6.
The reference character A denotes the body of an automobile, B an automobile top, C a lap of the top, D a front support, E a center support, F a back support and G buttons by which the curtain 1 is secured to the automobile top.
My invention comprises a curtain 1 which has an opening therein, a removable curtain or window 6 which has wire screening in the panels thereof and another removable curtain or window 6 which has celluloid in the panels thereof.
' In constructing my invention I take ourtain 1 and cut button holes 2 adjacent to the outer edge thereof spacing them so they will fit over buttons on the automobile top to which the curtain is tobe applied. Then I cut an opening 3 and adjacent to the edge thereof I secure a lap 5 by sewing it thereto or by other means. Through the lap 5 are out button holes 4t which lit over buttons & that are secured to the curtain l under the lap 5. The lower edge of the lap 5 is cut at K in such a manner that the lower edge of the inner curtain 6 can be fastened on the outside of the lower edge of opening 3 by the buttons on curtain 1 passing through button holes in lap 5 and the button holes in the lower edge of curtain 6, which is done in stormy weather when the curtain which has celluloid panels therein is used to shed water from the curtain 1. In making an inner curtain or window, I take two layers of canvas cloth and sew them together. Then I cut openings 9 therein and place wire netting or celluloid between the layers and secure them therein. Adjacent to the outer edges thereof are cut button holes 8 to correspond with button holes 4 and buttons 4 in curtain 1 so that the curtain 6 can be secured between curtain 1 and lap 5 by placing the button holes over the buttons 4:.
In the construction of a window having only one panel therein, such as shown in Fig. 6, the edges of the screen wire are covered with a channel-shaped strip of metal 12, the screen being placed in the channel 15 of the strip and then the walls of the strip being pressed together. Then I cover the strip with canvas and make button holes 12 to correspond with buttons 1.
The curtain is secured to the automobile top in the usual manner, by placing the button holes over the buttons and then turning the buttons over the holes to secure the curtain to the top.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is:
1. In combination, a vehicle curtain having an opening therein and provided at its outer side with portions overlying the mar ginal edges of the opening, another curtain overlying the opening and the marginal edges thereof, and coacting means carried by said overlying portions and marginal edges whereby the second-mentioned curtain is detachably secured to the inner side of the overlying portions, the overlying portions having slits through the marginal edges of the opening adjacent to the lower corners thereof to permit the insertion of the lower part of the second-mentioned curtain through said slits whereby the lower overlying portion is overlapped on its outer side.
2. An automobile curtain having an open ing therein and providedwith laps secured to the outer side of the curtain so as to overlie the marginal edges of the opening, said marginal edges and laps being provided with coacting means adapted to secure detachably to the lirst-n'ientioned curtain another curtain which may be provided with a transparent or screen panel and the marginal edges of the laps adjacent to the lower corners of the opening being horizontally slitted to permit of the insertion of the second-mentioned curtain through thelaps adjacent to the lower edge of the opening from the inner to the outer side of the laps so as to shed Water from the secondmentioned curtain outside of the lower lap.
8. An automobile curtain comprising a main curtain having an opening therein and a paneled curtain fitting in said opening, said main curtain including laps overlying the marginal edges of the opening, said marginal edges and laps being provided with coacting means detachably securing the paneled curtain to the main curtain, and said main curtain being provided with slits adjacent the lower corners of the opening, through which slits the paneled curtain may be inserted so as to overlap the outer side of the main curtain.
In witness whereof, I afiix my signature.
MILIVOJ MARTINGV.
