Description
Jan. 11 2 A..BILZ I FILE ARRANGEMENT IN SHEET FEEDING APPARATUS Filed Sept. 26, 1925 Patented Jan. 11, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PILE ARRANGEMENT IN SHEET-FEEDING APPARATUS.
Application filed September 26, 1925, Serial No. 58,918, and in Germany June 30, 1925.
This invention relates to an apparatus for the continuous pile-feeding for sheet feed ing apparatus which is of simpler construction and cheaper than similar apparatus of known type, as the commonly used wheelpawl and shaft gears and separate frames are avoided which increase the cost of manufacture, render the attendance difiicult and cause disturbances in service.
The apparatus according to the invention can be mounted easily and rapidly on any sheet feeding apparatus; its operation is reliable and it is cheap.
These advantages are obtained by fixing, underneath a sheet sucker of the sheet feeding apparatus a cage on said sheet feeding apparatus, which cage is open at the bottom end and at the rear, in the sides of which, curved in outward direction, endless chains, one in each side, are arranged which are driven from the driving shaft of the sheet feeding apparatus and in which, at intervals, bars are mounted which serve as supports for the pile-plates.
The arrangement of the cage open at the bottom end and at the rear presents the advantage that the paper piles can be conveyed to and into the apparatus on trucks, the walls of the cage limiting the movement of the truck, no bars, abutments or the like being necessary on the floor for this purpose, the side walls of the cage serving as guides for the ascending paper pile so that the sheets in the pile cannot shift and are fed. without special means, in correct position to the sheet feeding apparatus.
An embodiment of the invention is shown, by way of example, on the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a section on line AB of Fig. 1 at double the scale as used in Fig. 1.
On the lower side of the sheet feeding apparatus 1 of known type designed to feed the single sheets to the printing press with the aid of convenient lifting elements, a cage 2 is fixed which essentially consists of longitudinal bars and cross stays and is open at the lower end and at the rear. The cross stays at the two sides of the cage are each bent outwardly at the middle so that guides 3 for an endless chain 4 are formed, said chains being each guided over pulleys 5, 6, 7, 8. On the links of the chains supports 9 are fixed at uniform distances apart. The inner surfaces of these supports have longitudinal grooves, said grooves of two opposite supports being designed to receive a sheet metal plate 10 on which the paper piles are placed.
When the uppermost pile has been used the machine up to about 4 or 5 cm. height its supporting plate 10 is removed and inserted into the next lower supports 9 which are free, a new paper pile being placed upon this plate 10 while the pile on the upper plate 10 is being used by the sheet feeding apparatus, so that the machine works continuously.
I claim Apparatus for continuous pile-feeding for sheet feeding apparatus, comprising in combination with the feed sucker and with the driving shaft of t io sheet feeding apparatus, a cage open at the bottom end and the rear attached to said sheet feeding apparz-itus and having its two opposite sides curves at the middle in outward direction to form guides, an endless chain in each guide, means for driving said endless chains from said driving shaft of said sheet feeding apparatus, bars fixed on the opposite links of the endless chains at uniform distance apart and having each a longitudinal groove in the inner face, and sheet metal plates engaging with said grooves of two opposite bars and designed to carry a paper pile.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ANTON BILZ.
