My invention relates particularly to tables which have a fixed top and extension wings or sections which afford working surfaces in addition to the top of the table. In my improvement such an extension is applied to each end of the table in a form adapting the eXtensionto rest under the top of the table and to be drawn horizontally from under the table top,

The object of the invention is to provide such a table in a form adapting it to a variety of uses in homes and elsewhere.

Referring to said drawings, A is the top of the table. This is flat and rectangular in shape and is supported by the four legs or corner posts, A and the two side walls, A The ends of the side walls, A are mortised into the corner posts. At each end of the table, the lower parts of the corner posts, A are joined by a cross member, A which has its ends rigidly secured to the corner posts in any suitable manner. Said cross members are joined to each other by means of a horizontal staying member, A A horizontal bead or track rail, A is secured to the lower part of the inner face of each side wall, A said track rails being wide enough to make the space between them less than the distance between the corner posts at each end of the table structure. Said track rails support the slidable extension sections or structures, as will now be described.

At each end of the table-the space under the table top, A, and between the adjacent corner posts is left open, the stationary end wall usually placed into said space in ordinary tables being omitted. At each end of the table a slidable extension section or structure having the base, B, extends be-' tween the corner posts and is wide enough to fill the space between the corner posts and'to rest on the track rails, A so that each such section may be pushed inward on said track rails until the section is entirely within the body of the table. the outer edge of said section having passed the hinge edge of the door, C.

The door, C, has at each end and near its hinge edge a pintle, G which extends into a socket or bearing, C in the bearing plate,

G which is sunk into the face of the corner post. The width of the dooris such as to adapt its free edge to meet the lower face of the table top, A, whenthe door is turned into its upper position after the adjacent extension section has been pushed into its inner position. The pintles, C and the hinge edge of the door are placed at such height as to bring said edge to approximately the level of the upper faces of the track rails, A ,,when the door is open in order that said edge of the door may form a support for the base, B, when the door is open and said section has been drawn out into its outer position. The door is to be long enough to bring its ends close to the adjacent faces'of the adjacent corner posts, On what is the outer face of the door when the door is closed, there is placed a knob, G which may be grasped by the hand for opening the door. The door may be held in its closed position by frictional engagement of its ends with the corner posts and of its free edge with the lower face of the table top; or any suitable latch mechanism or locking device, not shown, may be applied to the door for holding it in the closed position. Then the door is opened, it will hang suspended from the pintles, C

From the inner edge of each base, B, a fixed wall, B rises approximately to the height of the lower face of the table top. Said wall bears against the lower face of the table top, A, whenever there is downward pressurev on the outer edge of the base, B, tendin to tilt said section. Thus the track rails, A and the table top, A, confine said section or structure to horizontal movement.

Extending outward from the wall, B and along each side edge of the base, B, is an upright wall, 13", which rises as high as the wall, B and extends toward the outer edge of the base, B, farenough to form compartments for receiving articles used by a person who is working at the table. At the right hand end of the table, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, these compartments are pigeon holes formed by placing partitions, B between the walls, B and extending from the wall, B outward as far as the length of the side wall, 13 These partitions are as much lower than the walls, B and B as the thickness of the cover wall, B, which is as wide as the length of the partitions, B and long enough to have its ends bear against the walls, 13 The walls, B B and the partitions, B and the cover wall, 13', are suitably joined to each other to make this slidable section a rigid structure.

As above indicated, this slidable end section may be pushed inward far enough to allow the closing of the door, 0, the door being closed by turning it outward and upward on the hinge line which extends through the pintles, C

At the left hand end of the table as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the walls, 13 and B are present as before; but the partitions, i and the cover wall, B are omitted. An outer wall, B joins the outer ends of the walls, 13 A partition, 13, is placed between and parallel to the walls, B and B and has its ends joined to the side walls, 13 A partition, 13, extends from the wall, 13, to the wall, Bf, approximately midway between the side walls, B Thus three compartments are formed which have a bottom and are surrounded by upright walls and are open at the top. These open-top compartments may be used to receive any kind of materials or tools used by a person working at that end. of the table. For example, if that person is sewing, those compartments may be used to contain threads and other sewing material, scissors, needles, etc.

At the other end of the table, the pigeon holes may be used to hold papers, writing material, and other articles used by a person engaged in work involving the use of such materials. 7

It will be observed that when both extension sections are in their inner positions and the end doors, C, are closed, the table will occupy only the space usually occupied by an ordinary table having a top of the same dimensions. Either extension structure may be drawn into its outer position independently of the other, whereby the space occupied by the table will be increased only to the extent that the one extension structure is drawn outward.

I claim as my invention,
