The present invention relates toV a combined pocket knife and savings bank, the primary object of the invention being to provide a knife having a hollow handle providing compartments for the reception of coins.

An object of the invention is to provide means to lock the compartment so that unauthorized persons may not remove the coins therefrom.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a guard disposed adjacent to the slot through which coins are inserted to prevent the coins from being removed by gravity, through the slot.

`With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the body portion of the combined knife and bank which comprises sections 6 and 7 respectively, which sections are secured in spaced relar tion with each other by means of the pins 8 that also act as bearings for the knife blades 9 that are mounted therebetween. l

Each of the sections 6 embodies an inner wall l0 and an outer wall 11 which walls are held in spaced relation with each 'other by means of the Vflange l2 forming a part of one of the walls, the flange l2 extending around one end of each section to close one end thereof. y

Each section has one of its lends partially closed `as by means of a removable end piece l5 which is shown as spaced from one wall of the section providing a clearance or opening 26 through which a coinv such as indicated at 27 may be inserted. the coin being forced over the lingers 2l of the end piece to be hereinafter more fully described. Y

TheseV end pieces are identical, and as shown, `embody a plate 16 formed with cut out portions defining spaced fingers 17.- Secured to the plate 16 by means of the rivets 1 8 is a spring plate 19 constructed toprovide fingers 20 that are curved downwardly as at 2l to frictionally engage one wall o`f the compartment of which the end member forms a part.

Disposed between the lingers 2O is a lock l ing tongue 22 thatis of a length greater than the lingers 20, and as shown, is curved downwardly in a direction'opposite to the curvature of the lingers 20, where the same is designed to pass into y the opening 23 formed in one wall of the coin compartment to the end that when the end member is slid into position, the locking tongue 22, by .its engagement within the opening 23, will lock the end member against movement.

rEhe opening A3 is provided witlian olfset portion 24 that provides a clearance for the key to permit the key to pass through the opening while it is being operated to release the end member.

The key is indicated by the reference character 25 and is adapted to be inserted in the space between the sections, when the blades have been moved to their open positions, with the result that as the key contacts with the locking linger 22 of the end member which is being removed, the locking finger will be forced from its position within the opening 23 to the end that the end member will be forced outwardly disengaging the walls of the coin compartment.

Thus it will be seeny that when the end member has been removed, the coins contained within the coin compartment will fall therefrom. Y

When the end member is again positioned to close the end of the coin compartments, it is obvious that the locking tongue will automatically position itsel't within the opening Q3 to lock the end member against movement. y

It might be further stated that the ange l2 is out away to providel an opening 13 through which a key may be inserted to engage a coin held between the iingers 2l and one Vwall of the section in which the coin is positioned, to force the coin from the device, should it be desired to insert the key to remove the end piece l5. A guarding flange let extends inwardly adjacent to the opening to prevent coins from being removed by gravity or by shaking the body portion.

From the, foregoing it will be obvious tha coins may be inserted in the sections between the end sections and the outer walls 1l oii the lateral sections oit the body portion, the coins being forced over the lingers 21 that guard against coins beingremoved through this opening.

In a. device of the character described, a body portion embodying a substantially narrow compartment, one wall of the compartment having a key opening, one end of the body portion adjacent to the opening being open, a removable closure for closing the open end of the eompartmenntsaid removable closure being of a width to provide a lateral passageway to permit coins to be positioned in the compartment, said closure including a lookingiinger extended in one di rection and adapted to position itself` in the key opening to lock the closure in position, fingers forming a part of the closure and curved in the opposite direction from the locking finger, the last mentioned fingers adapted to frictionally engage lone wall of the compartl'nent t0 urge the locking .finger within the key opening, said last mentioned lingers adapted to prevent coins from passing ont of the lateral passageway, and said locking linger adapted to be forced from the key Iopening' to permit the closure to be removed.
