Description

F Wm H n W' m [7 s. n. HOLT.
Farm-63m.
Patefitd March 30,1875.
THE GRAPHIC (IO-PHOTOrLITH-SQ L41 PARK PLACEJLY- SAMUEL R. HOLT, or WORTHINGTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,337, dated March 30, 1875 application filed July 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. HOLT, of Worthington, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; andIdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptlon of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in gates.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View, in horizontal section, of the same, showing my method of slotting the pales or pickets of my gate, and also the course taken by the stringers in the same.
My invention consists in the parts and combin ations, as hereinafter specified and claimed, wherein A A are two upright posts, from one of which the gate swings. B are stringers, of wire or light wrought-iron. C are pickets or pales, placed at an incline, as shown in the drawings. In the pales (J are provided slots 0, at such an angle to the length of the picket as to permit the horizontal passage of the stringers B. These slots are arranged horizontally upon one side and tlie'other, upon the body of the picket, and are made of a depth sufficiently beyond the middle of the picket to admit of the wire passing substantially through the center of the same. In placing the picket upon the stringers B the slots (J are made to face alternately in opposite directions against the stringer B in such a manner that the stringers and pickets are woven together.
I am perfectly aware that gates and panels have been constructed with the pickets strung upon stringers by holes made through them; also, that fences have been constructed with vertical pickets woven on the horizontal stringers; this, therefore, I do not claim.
The main feature of my invention, however, consists in inclining the pales and providing the slots 0 toaccommodate the horizontal passage of the stringers B. By this provision the par ts act as mutual bracings to each other, and constitute an exceedingly safe panel, and one capable of bearing great weight or pressure without sagging.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The gate herein described, composed of the end vertical posts A, horizontal stringers B, and pickets 0', said pickets provided on alternate faces with slots 0, and placed or woven in an inclined or slanting position on the horizontal stringers B, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of July, 1874.
SAMUEL B. HOLT.
