VICTOR ODQUIST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SHEET-METAL BOX COVER.
Application filed February 1, 1924.
My present invention relates to what is known in the art as padded covers for candy boxes and the like and has for a primary object the provision of means for preventing deformation of the outer member of a cover formed of separate spaced-apart metal sheets.
Sheet metal boxes employed for packaging candy, or the like, are at the present time o constructed in such manner as to provide both an ornamental appearance and a strong and rigid structure adapted to resist rough usage and handling in shipment.
To this end, covers for such boxes have i heretofore been provided com n'ising' spacedapart metal sheets, the outer one of which is domed, or given other pleasing configuration, the sheets being connected together and formed in such manner as to provide a relatively rigid construction in which sharp edges and other parts likely to become bent or marred in appearance are eliminated. It is also one purpose of such a construction to cause the cover to have a substantial and massive appearance. It has been found, however, that, even with such provisions against marring and deformation, the top sheet of the cover sometimes becomes-bent, or dented, and inasmuch as there is no way W to get at the under side of the sheet, it is very di'liicult to straighten out the metal when such deformation occurs.
My invention provides means interposed between the metal sheets of a cover of the type just described for the purpose of supporting and preventing deformation of the outer domed sheet.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan view, partially broken away, of a box cover in which my invention is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken substantially on the line 22 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the interior supporting member.
The cover which I have shown on the drawings for the purpose of illustrating my invention comprises an outer domed sheet 21,
Serial No. 689,856.
turned downwardly at its edge, as indicated at 22, and inwardly at 23 to engage an outwardly turned flange 24 on a vertical wall portion 25 of an inner sheet 26. Said sheet 26, inwardly of the wall portion 25, is preferably'bent upwardly, as shown at 2'7, and extends across the cover in substantially horizontal direction. Said wall 25 is adapted to frictionally engage within the box body and the flange 80, formed by the interfolded edges of the sheets 21 and 26, will contact with the edge of said body to limit the inward movement of the cover.
Between the sheets 21 and 26, I provide a supporting member 28, which may be of sheet metal and obviously may assume a variety of particular forms. As illustrated, said member comprises a body having side extensions 29, and end extensions 31 which are flanged downwardly as indicated, respectively, at 32 and Said flanges are adapted to engage the inner sheet 26 at the edges thereof and preferably just within the wall port-ions 25, the body of the supporting member being in contact with the domed sheet 21 throughout a substantial' area and thus positively holding the latter to its proper shape and preventing deformation thereof which might otherwise result from rough handling in shipment, or otherwise.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim: j
A hollow sheet metal cover for boxes composed of an upper sheet and a lower sheet having vertical sides, said sheets being spaced apart and united at their edges and forming a flange at the upper corner ofthe cover, and an inner sheet bearing against the underside of the upper sheet and having its edge formed with depending fiangeswhich bear against the vertical sides of the lower sheet and bearing at their bottom edges on the top surface of said lower sheet.
