DETACHABLE BRACE FOR PLOW HANDLES.
Application filed November 21, 1925.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in plows and is more particularly adapted for bracing the handles thereof.
One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a detachable brace for the plow handles whereby the use of the usual stationary rings which extend between the handles is obviated.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which may be easily and conveniently placed in position for supporting the plow handles in a rigid manner, means being provided for preventing the accidental displacement of the device while the same is in use upon the plow.
A still further object is to provide a .device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapt ed for the purposes for which it is desig nated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the same,-
Figure 1 is a top plan View of my device showing the same in use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view. 7
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line -4 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on line 55 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred em-.
bodiment of my invention, the numerals 1 and '2 designate a pair of plow handles which are of the well known construction, the converging ends of which are connected to the plow beam 3 in the usual manner and the outer ends of which are spaced from one another. Heretofore the bracing means employed for holding the handles in properly spaced positionconsisted of the stationary rungs which extended between the handles adjacent the outer ends thereof. The present invention has for its particular purpose to provide a bracing means which may be detachably associated with the handles and Serial No. 70,496.
channels or guides 5 and 6, respectively, in
which are adapted to slidably operate the elongated arms 7 and 8, respectively. These channels 5 and 6 have their outer ends terminating at a point adjacent the respective ends of the plate 4.
Formed in the bottom face of the plate 4 in alignment with the longitudinally extending channels 5 and 6 are the similar channels 9 and 10 respectively. These channels extend to the outer ends of the plate 4: and the inner ends of the channels formed in the bottom face of the plate a and the outer ends of the channels formed in the upper face of the plate terminate in the openings 11 and 12 respectively, the purpose of which will be presently apparent.
The elongated arms 7 and 8 which are adapted for slidable movement in the longitudinal channels 5 and 6 respectively terminate at their outer ends in the downwardly extending portions 13 and 14 respectively and the latter are adapted to be received in the openings 11 and 12 formed in the plate 4. The lower portions of the downwardly extending members 13 and 14: have the shorter arms 15 and 16 extending outwardly therefrom and are disposed within the channels .9 and 10 provided in the outer ends of the bottom face of the plate 4, in the man-- ner as clearly illustrated in the drawing.
Secured to the outer ends of the shorter arms 15 and 16 respectively and extending transversely thereto are the strips 17 and 18 respectively. These strips 17 and 18 and the adjacent ends of the plate 4: when in position on the plow handles 1 and 2 will form a handle engaging means for holding the bracein position on the plow. For the purpose of controlling the actuation of the arms and the handle engaging portions carried thereby whereby the brace may be detached from or placed in position on the handles of the plow, I provide the lever 19. This lever is pivotally supported intermediate its ends on the top face of the plate 4; as shown in in the drawing, and is also connected to the inner ends of the arms 7 and 8 respectively by any suitable fastening means, as is illustrated at 21 and 22 in the draw ing. This construction enables the arms to be interconnected whereby the sinmltaneous action of the same is provided. The outer end of the lever 19 extends beyond the outer side of the plate 4 and is provided with a suitable aperture for the purpose of sup porting therein the pawl 23. This pawl is preferably constructed so as to provide a double acting :pawl for cooperation with the teeth 2% formed in the outer side face of-the plate 4 whereby a means is provided for holding the lever 19 and the arms 7 and 8 connected thereto in various adjusted p0 sitionsso as to cause the strips 17 and 18 to be held in a secured position with respect to the handles 1 and 2 when the device is in use.
Also carried by the outer'side face of the plate 4 and arranged in spaced relation thereto is the supporting member 25. The latter is adapted to act as a guide means for the outer end of the lever 19 and it is to'be understood that the same will form a rest for-the outer end o fthe lever when the lat-- ter is actuated. This supporting member further aids in '-preventing the accidental displacement of the double actimx pawl 23 from its-operative position with respect to the teeth 24.
Extending from the forward portion of the plate l are the crossed rods 26 and 27 respectively, the inner ends of which carry the sap porting elements 28. As each of the securing means associated with the lower ends of the crossed rods are substantially of the same construction, the description of one is thought to suflice for the description of both. The securing means consists of a slidablevmembcr 29 which has an elongated slot 30 formed ad-j acen-tthe inner end thereof and the purpose of which is to provide a means for cooperation with the adjusting screw 31 which extends therethrough and is adapted to be carried by the supporting member 28. The outer end of each of the slidable members has a shoulder 32 formed thereon and extends downwardly for the purpose of engaging the outer side face of the plow handles and cooperates with the side face of'the supporting, member. 28 in cl ar-npin g the handles of the plows there-- between.
An additional means for holding the slidable member29 in adjusted position with respect to th'esuppor-ting member 28'consisting in providing the inner end of the slidable 2 her with the down-turned portion -3.S -and adapted to extend tensverseliy therethroug-h is the set screw 34, the innerend of which will engage the inner side of the supporting member 28 whereby the slidable mem ber 29 may be adjusted with respect to the supporting member and to further hold the same in a claimied position on the plow handle.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that a bracing means has been provided for use in connection with plow handles whereby the same may be detachably connected. therefrom, means being associated therewith for preventing the accidental displacement of the plow handle enelements when the device is in use. Furthermore, by constructing a bracing means of the above mentioned character, the same may be moved longitudinally along the handles of the plow until the desired width or Space between the respectivewhandl'es has been obtained to meet the necessary requirements and thereupon the bracing means may be adjusted in a locked position upon'the handles to hold the same in its adjusted position.
The simplicity of my device furthermore enables the same to be easily and quickly actuated and will not in any Way interfere with the controlling of the plow.
From the "foregoing description o f thecons-truction of my improveddevi'ce, it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out/the obj- .lBS of the invention, and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion, and insthe minor details-of construction may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit or'sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: r
1. In combination withv 'a pair of plow handles; of bracing means therefor detachably supported therebetween comprisinga plate, handle engaging members slz'idably supported thereon, and means for actuating said members.
2. In combination 'witht apair of plow handles; of bracing means therefor detachabl-y supported thereb'etween comprising a plate, handle engaging members sli'dably supported thereon, means for actuating'sa'idmembers, and means for holding'the aforementioned handle engaging members in locked engagement with saidhandles.
In combination with a pair of plow handles; of' bracing means therefor detachably supported therebetween comprising: 'a plate, handle engaging members slid-ably supported thereon, means for actuating said n'iem'bers, supporting rods extending forwardly from said plate, and additional handle engaging members carried by said rod-s.
4. In combination with a pair of plow handles; of bracing means therefor detachably supported therebetween comprising a plate having longitudinally extending guide means formed therein, elongated arms slidably supported in said guide means and extending beyond the ends of said plate, handle engaging members carried by said extensions and cooperating wlth the outer ends .of said plate for engagement with said handles, means for interconnecting said arms, and actuating the same, and means carried by said last mentioned means and cooperating with said plate for holding the handle engaging members in locked engagement with said handles.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
