Description

Dec. 28 1926. 1,612,512
J. P. KEENE MANHOLE CONSTRUCTON Filed Feb. 5 i925 ltl Patented Dec. 28, 1926.
UNITED STATES JAMES P. KEENE, 0F YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
MANI-IOLE CONSTRUCTION.
Application led February The present invention relates to manhole constructions.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a manhole construction of increased strength and rigidity, as well as being economical and simple from the standpoint of manufacture.
Further objects of' my invention will appear from the following detailed. description thereof, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings:
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view of a manhole constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a diametric section of the manhole construction.
Figur-e 3 is a plan view of a modification.
Figure 4 is a diametric section of Figure 3.
The numeral l indicates the frame entering into a manhole construction, in accordance with this invention. Said frame is of unitary construction and may be circular, as shown in the drawings, oval, or any other` suitable shape. The frame consists of a U- shaped channel construction having sides 2 and 3 formed on a horizontal section 4. T he side 2 is provided with a flange 5. The flange 5 is secured to the tank or container G by welding or other suitable means. The edge of the side 3 is also secured to the rim of the manhole opening in the container 6, as shown at 7 by means of welding or other suitable method. The horizontal section 4 of the `trame is provided with perforations 8 adapted to receive bolts 9 by means of which the manhole cover l0 is secured to the frame. The bolts 9 may be permanently secured in the frame by means of welding or other suitable method. In Figures 3 and 4 I have shown a modified construction in which the cover l0 instead of being .secured to the frame 1 by means of' a plurality of bolts and nuts, is secured by means of a hinge ll and a hinged lock bolt l2, as will be clearly understood from the drawing.
From the foregoing descript-ion, the nature and value of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which the same appertains. By reason of the channel frame construction rigidly Secured to the tank or container, extreme strength is obtained, thus rendering it possible to obtain an absolutely tight and permanent closure, and the construction is thus adapted particu- 5, 1925. larly to containers requiring higher resistance properties.
It will also be observed that by the use of the above construction it is possible to obtain the benefits above mentioned by means of a cover attached to the outside of the manhole instead of the inside, as has generally been the case heretofore, thus rendering the construction particularly adaptable to convenient and expeditious use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In combination with a tank having a manhole opening, a manhole construction comprising a unitary frame of channel construction, the side sections of said channel being of substantially equal lengths, the edge of the inner side section being secured to said tank along the edge of the manhole opening, a cover, and means for .securing said cover to said frame.
2. In combination with a tank having a manhole opening, a manhole construction comprising a unitary frame of channel construction, the side sections of said channel being of substantially equal lengths, the edge of the inner side section being .secured to said tank along the edge of the manhole opening, a cover, and bolts permanently secured in said frame whereby said cover may be secured thereto.
3. In combination with a tank having a manhole opening, a manhole construction comprising a unitary frame, said frame having a horizontal and side sections forming a channel, .said side sections being of substantially equal lengths, the inner side section being secured to said tank along the edge of said manhole opening, a fiange on the outer side section arranged to be secured to said tank, a cover, and means for securing said cover to said frame.
4. In combination with a tank having a manhole opening, a manhole construction comprising a unitary frame, said frame having a horizontal and side sections forming a channel, said side sections being of substantially equal lenffths, the inner side section being secured to said tank along the edge of said manhole opening, a flange on the outer side section arranged to be secured to said tank, a cover, and bolts permanently secured in the horizontal section of said frame whereby said cover may be secured thereto.
' JAMES P. KEENE.
