Description

Dec. 28 1926.
E. G. GARTIN FEEDING MECHANISM Filed Dec. 22, 1922 object of my invention is to provide an im- Patented Dec. 28, 1926 UNITED STATES PAT ENT OFFICE.
ELMElRi G. GARTIN, OF CLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO SUILLIVAN MA- CHINERY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
FEEDING MECHANISM.
Application filed December 22, 19 22. Serial No. 608,455.
My invention relates to feeding mechanisms, and more particularly to feeding mechanisms for rock drilling motors.
1 An object of my invention is to provide an improved feeding mechanism. Another proved and very compact feeding mechanism for rocking drilling. motors. A further object of my inventiolr is to provide an improved fluid operated feeding mechanism for rock drilling motors in which the over-all length may be materially dimin ished while obtaining relatively long feed. ()therobjects and advantages of my invention will hereinafter more fully appear.
In'the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one form which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,
Fig. 1 is a view partially in elevation, but mainly in central longitudinal vertical section with parts broken away, illustrating one embodiment which my-invention -may assume in practice, J
Fig. 2 is atransverse vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the form of my invention, which I have selected for purposes of illustration I have shown the same in combination With a per-- cussive drilling'motor 1, which motor is adapted to actuate a drill steel 2 and is provided with improved feeding mechanism hereinafter described.
The motorl is provided with lateral gibs 3, the opposite sides of which gibs are guided in ways 4 formed in a shell 5. Extending longitudinally of the shell and journaled in bearings 6 and 7 respectively at the opposite ends thereof, is a rotatable threaded shaft 8 'whichmay be drive by a gear -9 and with this threaded shaft or I screw a nut 10, suitably fixed to the motor 1,
cooperates. Suitably attached to the shell 5 and herein formed integrally therewith is a cylinder member 12 in whose bore 13 a piston lat provided with suitablepackings '15 and. 16 'is reciprocable. For the purpose of pre-' venting rotation of the piston during its reciprocation, various meansmayb'e employed, but herein, with a view to simplicity of illustration, I have showna key member 17 carried by the piston 14 and cooperating with a longitudinal straight slot 18 cut in the wall of-the cylinder bore 13. The piston member 14 is internally threaded as indicated at 20 and these threads fit and cooperate with the threads upon a screw 21 which is journaled at its opposite ends in suitable bearings 22 and 23 formed in the opposite heads of the feeding mechanism. Fluid pressure may be alternatively supplied to 0pposite sides of the piston 14 by way of ports 24 and 25. A -suitable valve 26 having a supply port 27 and an exhaust groove- 28 which is arranged to communicate with 'a vent port 29 serves to supply and exhaust fluid in such manner as to cause opposite movements ofWhe piston member 14. A pinion 30 is secured in non-rotative relation to the screw .21. It will be observed that the pinion 30 is larger than the gear 9.
As a result, a given number of,revolutions is taken ofthis fact by making the lead of a the screw 21 materially greater than that of the screw 8 whereby the movements of the piston 14 will least be hindered by fric-' tion of the threads of the screw 21, and the reaction, during drillingyof the motor 1 upon the screw 8 tending to rotate the same, thereby diminshed. It will be noted, moreover, that the maximum possible feed of the motor 1 is less than the maximum possible .travel of the piston 14 and this permits a further variation in the leads of the screws;
From the foregoing description the mode of operation of my invention will be very clearly apparent. Assuming the valve 26 to be in the position indicated, it will be observed that fluid pressure is passed through the passage 24 to act upon the rear end of move forward in its cylinder 12'and will, reason of the factthat it cannot itself rotate,
causerotation of the screw 21 and so of the pinion 30. The pinion 30 will in turn rotate the gear 9 and so efi'ect rotation ofthe screw 8. The latter will cooperate with the nut 10. to cause longitudinal feeding 'movement too ofthe motor 1. When it is desired to reverse the feed, the port 27 may be brought opposite the passage 25 and the groove 28 caused to communicate withthe passage '24:.- The piston; will then. move in the opposite direction, the screw 21 will rotate in an opposite direction and the screw 8 will rotate in an opposite direction. v
While I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood thattliis form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of'the appended claims.
