Application filed December This invention relates to a holder or container for holding during use the box containing shoe polish, either blacking or any other kind of paste polish or dressing, and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will hold the box containing the paste in a convenient manner for use without soiling the fingers, and which will also hold a brush or dauber convenient for applying the paste.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an article of this type in which the containers or boxes in which the shoe dressing is sold may be mounted in a way such that the cover is exposed, so that the aovertising or other printing on the cover may be noted without opening the container, therefore, the device may be used for advertising purposes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, I have devised the constructions illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, similar reference characters being employed throughout the various figures to indicate corresponding elements. In these drawings,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of one form of my device with a portion of the cover broken away to show the interior arrangement.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the cover in raised position.
Fig. at is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly different construction, and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section through the form shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the holder comprises a cupped shaped body member with a plurality of spring clips 11 preferably formed by cutting and bending it upwardly from the bottom thereof to grip the sides of the lower or body member 12 of the box containing the dressing 18, such as blacking or other suitable dressing. This box is the regular container of paste dressing on the market, and has the usual cover 1% telescoping over the upper open end of the body. A certain kind of dressing is sold in boxes having a pivoted cam element 15 mounted at one side of the body to engage under the outwardly extending flange 16 of the cover 14 for raising one side of the cover from the box to give easy access to the box.

The body of my improved holder therefore, is provided with a depression 1? to give suiticient room for easy manipulation of this cam. The holder also includes a cover 18 pivoted to the rear end of the body 10, as shown at 19, and this cover is provided with an opening 20 to receive the cover 14 of the dressing box, so that when the cover 18 is closed this cover 14 of the dressing box is exposed where the printing or advertising thereon is exposed, and itis not necessary to open the holder to determine what type or brand of dressing is contained in the box.
A. spring 21 is provided mounted on the pivot 19 reacting against the body and the cover of the holder to tend to hold this cover in the open position, as shown in Fig. 8, and there is a spring clip or catch 23 at the other side of the cover arranged to engage over the top of the cover to hold it in closed position, in Figs. 1 and 2. This clip is provided with a thumb piece located over the handle 24 or holder so. that it is easily accessible for depression by the thumb or finger to release the catch 2:2 and allow the cover 18 to be swung to the open position to allow access to the dressing box. The handle 24 is preferably a looped wire of suitable size bent to substantially the form indicated, and is secured to the under side of the body 10 by means of the loops 25. These loops are provided by cutting slits 26 in the bottom wall of the body and pressing the material between these slits downwardly. Thus the free ends 27 of the handle may be forced into these loops and will be held thereby against the lower wall of the bottom of the body.
The holder is preferably shaped substantially as shown in Fig. 1, that is substan tially semi-circular at its forward end but straight at its rear end. The cover and body are provided to the rear of the dressing box with means for retaining a dauber or brush 28 for applying the dressing. For this purpose the cover and body are provided with transverse recesses 29 and 30 respectively in alignment with each other so as to receive the brush and cooperate to hold it when the cover is closed. Spring clips 31 may also be provided on the side adjacent the dressing box to hold it when the cover is open. In the form shown these clips are made by cutting the lower wall of the body on all except one side and then bending the clips upwardly.
In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the clips 32 for retaining the dressing box in the body 33 instead of being strucl: up from the bottom Wall of this body as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 comprise separate members secured to this bottom Wall by any suitable means such as rivets 34:. These clips are also provided with transverse grooves 35 to engage over the head 36 on the dressing boX. The handle 24 is secured to the holder in the same manner as in the first form, and the cover 37 and the body 33 are provided with complementary transverse recesses 38 and 39 respectively to hold the brush 28. The cover is retained in closed position by the same tvne of clip or catch 22 as in the first form, and has a spring 21 tending to move it to the open position. In this form, however, the cover 40 of the dressing box is not left on the box, but is inserted in the opening 41 of the cover 37 and is held therein by frictional engagement with the sides of the opening an so that as the cover 3'? ot the holder is raised by the spring 21 when the catch 22 is released the cover so car ried along with it. A suitable gasket of anv suitable material 42 mounted over the open end of this cover, so that when the cover oi the holder is closed this gasket will be seated on the upper edge of the body 12 of the dressing box and will be pressed thereagainst to make a tight closure. he regular cover of the dressing box is, however, exposed the same as in the first form so that the type and brand of dressing may be determined Without opening the holder. It will be apparent that in this type of holder, as the operator presses on the thumb piece 23 of the catch the spring 21 Will swing the covers and ac to open position exposing the dressing in the box tor use. In this ype oi hold-er it is not necessary to perform the separate operation of removing the cover from the dressing box after the cover of the holder is raisedf It will be apparent that this device pros a convenient mount and holder for the box --which raalres it easily and readavailable i? use, that the brush for applying the dress is also easily available .nd is carried Where it cannot soil other articles, and that the dressing may be used with out soiling the lingers. As the cover of the dressing he is exposed at all times this holder may be used for advertising purposes. Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
' e oi the character described a member, spring clips in said the sides of a dressing box in the inen'iber, a cover hinged oodv member, a spring tending to cover in raised position to allow to the dressing box, a spring catch to the cover in closed position, and a le tor the body member. testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
