This invention relates to combined desks and chairs for use in school or lecture rooms,
or elsewhere, as may be desired or possible.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a combined desk and chair which shall be readily adjustable for all positions and various sizes of occupants. Another opject of the invention is to provide a combined desk and chair which is readily portable or movable on account of its limited weight, certain important parts thereof being made of sheet metal. Other objects of my invention are mentioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front perspective view of my improved desk-chair; Fig. 2 is a fragment of the desk-chair in side elevation showing the desk elevated by lateral tilting thereof; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental view showing the supporting brackets, brace and other parts; Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of the vertically adj ustablesheet metal bracket of the supporting element; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the desk table and parts attached thereto; Fig. 6 is a fragment showing a slight modification; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one element of the modification; and Fig. 8 is a section, in fragment, taken longitudinally of the rod 7 and including the various parts associated therewith and carried thereby.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views on the drawings. In Figure 1 of the drawings a suitable type of chair is illustrated by the numeral 1, the chair being provided with an upright column 2 at one corner thereof for supporting the desk 3, as hereinafter described.
The numeral 4 indicates a vertical slot formed in the column 2 adjacent its upper end to enable vertical adjustment of the supporting element which includes the sheet metal bracket 5, the brace 6, and the transverse rod 7, said supporting element being adapted to carry the desk table or base 8 upon which the desk proper is mounted, as hereinafter described. The bracket 5 is preferably formed of heavy sheet metal, for
lightness, and has the integral endless marginal flange 9 formed thereon to reinforce it. The bracket 5 may carry a pair of studs 10 and 11 rigid therewith which extend into the column slot 4, one above the other, to maintain the bracket against forward and backward tilting. The lower end of the brace 6, which is preferably made of bar metal, is disposed opposite the lower end of the bracket 5 and a headed clamping bolt 12 operatively connects the two elements, said bolt projecting through an aperture in said bracket and is provided with a wing-nut 13 threaded thereon to enable the operator to clamp said brace and bracket upon said column in any desired position after vertical abjustment thereof. A headed bolt 14 also connects the brace 6 and bracket 5 above the bolt 12 and exteriorly of the slot 4, said boit 14 being sleeved by a spacer tube 15 to hold said brace and bracket suitably spaced.
The upper end of the brace 6 is bent out ward and upward at 16 and is rigidly connected with the upper end of the bracket 5 by a transverse rod 7, said rod being provided with the spaced nuts 17 and 18, threaded thereon, on oppositesides of said brace to enable a rigid connection therewith, said rod passing through a suitable aperturein said portion 16 of said brace. The opposite end of the rod 7 passes through an aperture 5 adjacent the upper end of the bracket 5 and may be provided with a head 19 engaging on the far side of said bracket, said rod being provided also with anut 20 threaded thereon between the bracket 5 and the nut The desk table 8 is preferably formed of heavy sheet metal in substantially triangular formation and is preferably provided with the integral dependingmarginal reinforcing flange 21011 the two converging sides thereof which converge upon the apex 38 of said table. The table 8 carries sheet metal hinge brackets 22 and 23 upon its under face which are preferably welded thereto for hinging said table upon the rod 7. The bracket 23is L shaped and is suitably apertured to allow the passage of the rod 7 the nut 18 being screwed close enough thereto to prevent longitudinal movement of said bracket on said rod.
The bracket 22 may. be and is L shaped in top plan view (Fig. 5) and is provided with a vertical leg 24 which is provided with an arcuate slot 25. The upper end of the bracket 22, where it is adapted to coact' with the inner face of the bracket 5, is suitably apertured to admit the passage of the rod 7 which serves a hinge pin therefor, and the nut may c screwed lightly against said bracket to maintain its juxtaposition and yet permit the table 8 to retain its hinged relation to the rod 7. A headed clamping bolt 26 is adjustably fixed in the bracket 5 in an aperture 26 adjacent the bolt 14 and penetrating the slot of the leg 24; ot' the bracket 22, the head of said bolt engaging on opposite sides of the arcuate slot 25. The out-- er end of the clamping bolt 26 may be provided with a wing-nut 27 threaded thereon, whereby the bracket leg 2% of the bracket 22 maybe adjustably clamped in any position within the limits of the slot .25.
The desk 3 may have a pair of spaced l. shaped hinges 28 and 29 rigidly secured to the under side thereof, each of said hinges havinga hinge eye 30 in slidable engag ment with a hinge rod 31 which is rigidly mounted in a-pair of eye-let bearing lugs 32 and 33 disposed adjacent the opposite ends of the straight untlanged edge or the table 8 and with which said lugs may be integral. The hinges 28 and 29 are so arranged on the desk 3 and with relation to each other and the bearing lugs 32 and 33 that a substantial sliding movemenai on ward and backward, on the rod 31 is permitted, said lugs servingalso as stop elements when engaged by the hinge eyes 30 in either position of the desk. @ne end of the desk overhangs the table 8 somewhat adjacent the hinge rod 31 and has a latch block 34.- rigidly secured to the under side tl'iereoi', said block being hemi-spherical in crosssection, and said block being adapted to engage detachably in the U shaped spring clamp catch element 35 (Fig. 3) when the desk 3 is swung to a vertical position on the hinges 28 and 29, whereby tne desk is nramtained in a vertical position. The catch 35 is rigidly secured to a sheet metal bracket 36 which is rigidly tastenethby welding or otherwise, to the under face of the table 8.
When the desk 3 is lowered to the horizon tal position and thetable 8 adjusted to an inclination, movement of said desk along the rod 31 is'prevented by the stud 37 rigid with the table 8 adjacent its end 38, said stud c1igaging in one of the series of apertures 39 formed in the channeled stop element 40 which is rigidly secured to the under face of the desk in any suitable manner.
The modification disclosed in Figures 6 and 7 is'provided to eliminate the lateral hinge movement of the desk 3 on the rod 31 and contemplates the substitution of a slotted channeled element 41 for the element 39, said element 41 being provided with the longitudinal slot d2. In this modification a headed bolt 43 is detachably mounted in the table 8, as a substitute :tor' the stud 37 and 'iassina' throu h the slot 42 of the element 1 a o 41 the head 491- of saidbolt being arranged within the channel of the element ll, whereby upward movement of the desk is prevented, the ends of the slot serving as stop means in cooperation with the lugs and 33 that respect. Adjustment of the nut 45 on the bolt and against the face 01 the element 8 prevents casual sliding movement of the desk 3 when the table 8 is adjusted to an inclination.
The preferred construction of the rod 7 ann the parts associated therewith and car-- ried thereby is illustrated in Figure 8 01 the drawings, Fl-herein the rod 7 is sleeve by the tubular bushings and 51, respectively, and the brackets and 23, respectively, are j ournaled on said bushings instear of on the rod 7 directly. Also, the bushings 50 and 51 are slightly lonner than the bean ing apertures in the brackets 22 and in which said bushings are arranged, whereby, the nuts 20 and 18 may be tightly screwed against the ends of said bushings and yet held slightly spaced from the brackets 22 and 23, respectively, thereby eliminating friction between said nuts and brackets and insuring ease of rotative movement or said brackets on said bushings.

I claim:
1. In combination with achair having a columi at one corner thereof, of a verica .1 adjustable sup iiorting element carried by said column, a substantially flat horizontally arranged table tiltabiy mounted upon said supporting element and vertically adjustable therewith, a bearing bar for said table, said bar being horizontally arranged beneath the table and having one end thereof mounted in said supporting element and the other end otherwise mounted, clamping means to maintain the table adjustment at different inclinations, and a desk hingedly mounted upon and above said table, the hinge axis thereof extending transversely of the axis of said table hinge axis to enable said desk to be swung laterally to an upright position.
2. In a device of the character described and in combination with supporting means, a sheet metal table, a desk tiltably mounted on said table. saidtable and desk being adapted for adjustment at different inclinations, said desk being adapted also to slide in its own plane, and a disengageable stud and recess connection between said desk and table to maintain the adjustment} of the former, said connection including a rigidly mounted stud and an element provided with a series of recesses adapted to be selectively engaged by said stud, disengagement of said stud and recess connection being effected by lifting said desk.
3. The combination with a chair having a column at one corner thereof, of a supporting element vertically adjustable on said column, said element comprising a; sheet metal bracket, a brace, and a transverse element connecting the upper ends ofv said bracket and brace; a table hingedly connected with said transverse element of said supporting element and adapted to be adjusted at different inclinations thereon; and a desk mounted upon said table and slidable in its own plane.
4:. The combination with a chair having a column at one corner thereof, of a supporting element vertically adjustable on said column; a table; an angular bearing bracket rigid with said table on the under side thereof and hinged to said supporting element; means to enable adjustment of the table at different inclinations, .said means including a slot in said bracket below the hinged point thereof and clamping means engaging in said slot; and a desk hingedly mounted upon said table and adapted to be laterally swung to an upright position, said desk being slidable in its own plane.
5. The combination with a chair having a column at one corner thereof, of a sup porting element vertically adjustable on said column, said element comprising a sheet metal bracket, a brace, a transverse rod connecting the upper ends ofsaid bracket and brace, and means connecting the lower ends of said bracket and brace, said means including adjustment means; a sheet metal table hingedly mounted upon said transverse rod; and a desk mounted upon said table and slidable in its own plane.
6. The combination with a chair having a column at one corner thereof, of a supporting element vertically adjustable on said column, said felement comprising a sheet metal bracket, a brace, a transverse rod con necting the upper ends of said bracket and brace, and means connecting the lower ends of said bracket and brace, said means including means for clamping said supporting element to said column; means carried by said bracket of said supporting element to prevent tilting movement of said bracket on said chair column; a table hingedly mounted upon said rod of said supporting element; and a desk mounted upon said table and slidable in its own plane.
.7. The combination with a chair having a column at one corner thereof, of a vertically adjustable supporting element carried by said column, an out-board brace carried by said column and movable vertically with said supporting element, a horizontal bearing rod connecting said brace with said supporting element, a substantially horizontal table arranged above said bearing rod, a plurality of bearing brackets connecting said table with said bearing rod to enable forward and backward rocking movement of said table thereon, one of said brackets having an extension which is swingingly arranged adjacent said supporting element, said bracket extension being provided with an arcuate slot, clamping means carried by said supporting element and adapted to engage said bracket extension slot to maintain the adjustment of said table at different inclinations, and a desk hingedly mounted upon and above said table and slidable in its own plane.
