The invention relates to ribbon-vibrating mechanism, and is applied to a typewriting machine in which the platen is on a frame shiftable between case-positions, and in which the ribbon- *ibrator is carried by the shift-frame and has a variable throw for of the type-keys, it is convenient to actuate the ribbon-vibrator through, and by means of, the universal bar which controls the stepby-step letter feed of the platen carriage upon operation of any type-key. It follows that certain of the mechanismfor operating the ribbon-vibrator is on the main frame of the machine, whereas the ribbon-vibrator itself and certain actuating means therefor are on the shift-frame.
An object of the present invention is the provision of novel and simple means whereby to connect the vibrator parts on the main frame with the vibrator parts on the shiftframe, so that there will be no interference with the movement of the shiftframe, and so that the movement of the vibrator, in either case-position of the shift-frame, may be the correct movement truly to present any selected color-zone of the ribbon to the printing point, without so-called bleeding of the ribbon, that is to say, without possibility of the type overlapping the boundary zones of the ribbon in its impact against the platen.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of novel and simple means, in
mechanism of the character mentioned,
whereby the vibrator-actuating parts may as set in neutral position; that is to say, in a position where the vibrator is silenced so that the *ibbon cannot cover the printing point, when the types are operated in any case-position of-the platen, as in stenciling.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

The machine herein illustrated is of the front-strike type, and comprises characterkeys 10, which throw type-bars 11 upward and rearward against the front of a platen 12, which is journaled in a sheet-metal carriage 13. The carriage travels to the left under the control of escapement mechanism, not shown, and is provided with roller-bearings 1a and 15, by which it travels on sheetmetal tracks 16 and 17. The tracks 16 and 17 form part of a shift-frame, which also includes a downwardly-extending rear member 18 and forwardly-extending side members 19; the latter being provided with pivot-screws 20, by means of which the shift frame is pivoted at either side to one of a pair of upper long links 21, these links being, in turn, pivoted to the main frame 22 by pivots 23 nearly behind but somewhat below the normal position of the pivots 20.
For guiding the shift-frame, there is provided a pair of links or rock-arms 24, one at each side of the machine, and each provided with a stub-shaft 25, on which rests a yoke 26 formed in the corresponding side piece 19 of the shift-frame; the links '24. being fast at their rear ends to-a transverselyextending rock-shaft 27, which is encircled by a spring, not shown, so tensioned as to assist in lifting the shift-frame to upper case.
For lifting theshift-frame, there is provided, at one. side of the keyboard, a shiftkey 29, fulcruined on a short shaft 30 on a standard 31 rising from a cross-tie 32, which connects the sides of the main frame. The shift-ke lever is provided with a rearward extension 33 underlying the elbowed end 34 c of a sheet-metal rock-arm fast on the shaft 275 follows that, when the Shift key 2 9 is depressed, its rearward extension S3 lifts the roclr-arin 35, thereby rocking the arms 2 upward so that the stub-shafts on the latter will lift the shift-frame. The shift-key 29 may be depressed until the shift-fraine is arrested by inwardly-turned heels 36 thereon, one on each side plate 19 thereof, and such heels strike set screws 37 on the turned-over ends 38 of arms or brackets 39 secured to a cross-piece 40 which connects the side plates ofthe main frame at the lower rear portion of the latter. When the shift-frame is shifted to this position, the types ll on the type-bars 11 are eifective to print, instead of the normally effective lowercase types Set screws 43, one at each side of the machine, in the brackets 39, by engagement with the under faces of the heel or flanges 36, arrestthe shift-frame in normal lower-case position when it is allowed by gravity to return to such posit-ion upon release of the shift-key.
The charactereye 10, when actuated, niove characterkey-levers 44L around a common fulcrum-plate 45, supported on the cross-tie ll). Each l'ey-lever 44, when actuated, inoves against the tension of a spring 46 to swing a bell-crank, not shown, and, through the latter, to pull on a link, not shown, to cause its type-bar 11 to swing.

Except when the ribbon is to remain in neutral position, as, for instance, in steucih ing, the ribbon is to be vibrated upon each operation of a characteulre-y, whether the platen is in lower or upper caseshi-i't posh tion; and, in accordance with the present invention, a bichronie ribbon may be employed, in which event the ribbon may have a va ible vibration to present one or the other of the color-zones thereof to the printing point. The ribbon comprising colorzones 53 and 54-, and wound upon spools, not shown, is threaded through the eyes 55 of a ribbon-vibrator or carrier, which comprises arms 56, conneted at. their lower ends to form a U-shaped structure 57. The ribbonvil'n'ator has up-and-down movement on a guide 58, secured by screws 59 to a rail 60, which is unitary with the front carriage-- guide-rail 16 of the shift-frame, and w iich depends vertically froin the forward edge of the latter, and extends lengthwise of the shift-frau'ie, being secured at each end at 61 to hr ets ($2 on the side plates 19 of the shift-frame. The ribbon-vibrator guide comprises a pair of upright urins 63, which are embraced by cars 6% turned around the same, one from each of the arms 56 of the ribbon-\dbrator. The base-piece of the ribbon-vibrator guide is slotted at 65 to provide a guideway for a stud 66, by means of which the ribbon-vibratoris connected to one arm 67 of a bell-crank pivoted at 68 to the shif fra ne rail 60. it follows fro-1n theforegoing that, at eachloperation of the shift-key-lever 29, the ribbon-vibrator guide and ribbon-vibrator, as a unit, together with the ribbonvibra'tor actuating arm 67, move with the shift-fraine between case-positions.
Connections from the vibrator-arm 67 to the universal. bar a7, for actuating the ribb'onwibrator upon operation of each typelrey, are as follows. A depending arm 69, which forms a bell-crank lever with the arm 67, is connected bya wire link 7'0 to an arm 71 of another, and horizontally disposed, bell-crank lever pivoted 'at- 72 on a bracket '73 secured at 75 to the cross-piece 40ofthe main frame. The bell-crank, of which the arm 71 is one part, comprisesanother arm 76 which lies in the path of movement of an upright arm 77 on the rock-shaft 49, to which the universal bar is made fast. lV-hen the universal bar is depressed to rock the shaft 49, the arm 77, which protrudes upward behind the bell-crank lewer-arin 76, swings forward and rests the latter counte-rclockwise to cause the arm 71 of that bell-crank to draw on the link 70, thus rocking the bell-crank couliter-clockwise, looking from the front, and lifting the ribbon-vibrator with the ribbon. A coil spring $8, on the pivot of the bell-crank ?l?3, when free to do so, turns the bell-crank and the ribbon-vibralor to normal po, ition, and, by causing the bell crank to bear against the arm 77, may serve to impel the universal bar position; In order that the ribbon-vibrator may a v riable stroke from a normal position of rest to the color-Zone intended to be used, the wire link '?0 has an adjustable connec tion to the hell-crank ari'n'll. s shown iii-ore particularly in Figures 3 a right-hand end is offset into a slot 79 in t arm 71. In the Figure 4 position of the l nk 70, it engages the arm 71 intermedif the ends of the slot 79, so that, when the arm 76 is actuated by the arm 7. from the universal bar, only such movement vof the link takes place as will sufiice to raise the 5, its

ribbon sufiiciently far to cause the black zone thereof to cover the printing point. When, however, the link '70 is swung to bring it to the forward end of the slot 79, as shown in F igure 5, the movement of the arm 71 will result in a greater movement of the link and this greater movement will be such as to cause the lower, or red, zone of the ribbon to cover the printing point. In event no vibration of the ribbon is desired, the link 70 is swung back, as shown in Figure 6, until it registers with a slot or recess offset from the slot 79. This slot or recess 80 is of sutficient depth to permit movement of the arm 71 by the arm 77 without movement or the link 70. The left-hand end of the link 70 is so hooked into the arm 69 of the ribbon-vibrator lever as to permit the link 70 to be swung from one to another of the Figures l, 5 and 6 positions. The righthand end o1 the link 70 is so hooked into the arm 71 as to permit free movement of the ribbon-vibrator between case-positions, and up and down swing of the link 70, without actuation of the ribbon-vibrator, until and unless a type-key is struck.
For setting the link 70 in its selected Figure l, 5 or 6 position, a finger-piece 81 is provided. This finger-piece is supported on the end of an arm 82 on a sleeve83, adapt ed to be rocked on a stub-shaft 84;, set into an upright extension 85 of the bracket 73. Also fast to the sleeve 83 is a depending arm 86 terminating in a bifurcation 87 which straddles the draw-link 70, and which, when the finger-piece 81 is pushed backward or forward, causes the link 70 to be correspondingly moved backward or forward in the slot 79. The upright 85, to which the finger piece 81 is pivoted, may terminate in an of? setplate 88, graduated as indicated at 89, 90 and 91; and a pointer 92, on the arm 82, by registration with either of the graduations 89, 90 or 91, may indicate the proper pos tion of the finger-piece 81 for writing in the black or red zones of the ribbon, or for stenciling, respectively.
As the face-area of the bichrome ribbon fields is very limited, the adjustment of the several parts intermediate the universal bar and the ribbon-carrier is usually a painstaking operation. The upper edge of the ribbon must be adjusted to an inoperative position just below the printing line and from this normal position it must be adjusted to the two shift positions that the types may strike the center of each narrow ribbon field. For th s purpose, the long link 70 of Figure 2 is "formed with an offset section, to provide means to increase or diminish the distance between the two pivoted ends of the link. In the assembly of the various tool-made parts, variations are always present, and should the first assembly of the parts develop a position for the top edge of the ribbon below the posit on of Figure 2, the ends of the link may be drawn together to raise the ribbon and carrier, or, it the ribbon is high, the links ends may be expanded by fiattening the offset section. In either case, whether the ribbon rides high or low at the first assembly, this condition is corrected by the longitudinally adjustable features incorporated in the link.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, a platen, a ribbon-vibrator, a lever movable in a substantially vertical plane for operating the ribbon-vibrator, a link connected to the vibrator-lever, a bell-crank lever operating in a horizontal plane, to one arm of which the link is also connected, means for adjusting the connection of the link along the bellcrank lever toward and from the fulcrum thereof, to vary the stroke of the ribbonvibrator to present to the printing point the selected color-zone of a bichrome ribbon, type-keys, and means engaging the other arm of the bell-crank lever for operating the bell-crank lever from the type-keys.
2. In a typewriting machine, a platen, a ribbon-vibrator, lever for operating the ribbon-vibrator, a link connected to the vibrator-lever, a second lever to which the link is also connected, means for adjusting the connection of the link along the second lever toward and from the fulcrum thereof, to vary the stroke of the ribbon-vibrator to present to the printing point the selected color-zone of a bichrome ribbon, type-keys, and means for actuating the second lever from the type-keys; said link-adjusting means con'rprising a lever pivoted at an intermediate point thereof to have two arms, one of which has a bifurcated end to receive the link, and the other of which carries a finger-piece for throwing the lever in a plane crosswise of the link.
3." In a typewriting machine, a platen, a ribbon-vibrator, a lever tor operating the ribbon-vibrator, a link connected to the vi ln'ator-lever, a second lever to which the link is also connected, means for adjusting the connection of the l nk along the second lover toward and from the fulcrum thereof, to vary the stroke of the ribbon-viln'ator to present to the printing point the selected color-zone of a bichrome ribbon, type-keys, and means for actuating the second lever from the type-keys; said link-adjusting means comprising an arm slotted to receive the link, means for rocking the arm, an n dicator on the link-adjusting arm, and a fixed plate having graduations thereon with which the indicator maybe brought into registration for determining the setting of the link and the consequent throw of the ribhon-vibrator.
4. In a typewriting' machine, a platen, a frame for the platen, means for shifting the platen-frame between case-positions, a ribbon-carrier on the case-shift frame, a lever on the case-shift frame for operating the ribbon-carrier, a second lever on the main frame of the machine, a link having connections to the two lovers such that the platenframe may be shifted between case-positions without actuation of either lever, type-keys, means for operating the second lever from the type-keys, the second lever being slotted lengthwise thereof to receive the link, and means for shifting the link along said slot to vary the throw of the ribboncarrier from a uniform normal position for presentation of a selected color-zone of the ribbon to the printing point, upon operation of the typekeys.
5. In a typewriting machine, a platen, a frame for the platen, means for shifting the platen-frame between case-positions, a ribbonvibrator on the case-shift frame, a lever on the case-shift frame for operating the ribbon-vibrator, a second lever on the main frame of the machine movable crosswise with respect to the plane of movement of the first lever, a link in the nature of a stiff wire hooked at one end into a recess in the first lever and hooked at the other end into a slot extending lengthwise of the second lever, so hat the shift-frame may be moved between case-positions with the ribbon-vibrator and the first lever without causing the link to operate either lever, type-keys, and means for actuating the second lever from the typekeys.
6. In a typewriting machine, a platen, a frame for the platen, means for shifting the platen-frame between case-positions, a ribbon-vibrator on the case-shift frame, a lever on the case-shift frame for operating the ribbon-vibrator, a second lever on the main frame of the machine movable crosswise with respect to the plane of movement of the first lever, a link in the nature of a still wire hooked at one end into a recess in the first lever and hooked at the other end into a slot extending lengthwise of the second lever, so that the shift-frame may be moved between case-positions with the ribbon-vibrator and the first lever without causing the link to operate either lever, type-keys, means for actuating the second lever from the type-keys, and means for adjusting the link along the slot of the second lever to vary the throw thereof to present a selected color-zone of a bichrome ribbon to the printing-point, upon actuation of the type-keys; said link-adjusting means comprising an arm on the main frame slotted to receive the link and means for rocking such slotted arm.
7. In a typewriting machine, a platen, a
frame for the platen, means for shifting the platen-frame between case-positions, a ribbon-vibrator on the case-shift frame, a lever on the case-shift frame for operating the ribbon-vibrator, a second lever on the main frame of the machine movable crosswise with respect to the plane of movement of the first lever, a link in the nature of a stiff wire hooked at one end into a recess in the first lever and hooked at the other end into a slot extending lengthwise of the second lever, so that the shift-frame may be moved between case-positions with the ribbon-vibrator and the first lever without causing the link to operate either lever, typekeys, means for actus ating the second lever from the type-keys, and means for adjusting the link along the slot of the second lever to vary the throw thereof to present a selected color-Zone of a bichrome ribbon to the printing point, upon actuation of the type-keys; said linkadjusting means comprising an arm on the main frame slotted to receive the link and means for rocking such slotted arm, said slot having a recess offset therefrom, whereby, when the link is in registration with such recess, the second lever may be actuated from the type-keys without actuation of the link.
8. In a front-strike typewriting machine, a frame for the platen, means for shifting the platen-frame up and down between case, positions, a ribbon-vibrator on the case-shift frame, a lever on the case-shift frame movable in a substantially vertical'plane for operating the ribbon-vibrator, a second lever on the main frame of the machine movable crosswise with respect to the plane of movement of the first lever, alink extending lengthwise of the platen, hooked at one end into a recess in the first lever and hooked at the other end into a slot extending length wise of the second lever, so that the shiftframe may be moved between casepositions with the ribbonvibrator and-the first lever without causing the link to operate either lever, type-keys, and means for actuating the second lever from the type-keys.
9. In a front-strike typewriting machine, a frame for the platen, insane for shifting the platen-frame up and down between case posi ions, a ribbon-vibrator on the case-shift frame, a lever on the case-shift frame movable in a substantially vertical plane for operating the ribbon-vibrator, a second lever on the 1 frame of the machine movable crosswise with respect to the plane of movement of the first lever. a link extending lenggt iwise of the platen. hooked at one end into a recess in the first lever and hooked at the other end into a slot extending lengthwise of the second lever, so that the shift frame may be moved between case-positions with the ribbon-vibrator and the first lever without causing the link to operate either lever, type-keys, means for actuating the llO second lever from the type-keys, and means for adjusting the link along the slot of the second lever to vary the throw thereof to present a selected color-zone of a bichrome ribbon to the printing point, upon actuation of the type-keys.
10. In a front-strike typewriting machine, a frame for the platen, means for shifting the platen-frame up and down between casepositions a ribbon-vibrator on the case-shift frame, a lever on the caseshift frame movable in a substantially vertical plane for operating the ribbon-vibrator, a second lever on the main frame of the machine movable crosswise with respect to the plane of movement of the first lever, a link extending lengthwise of the platen, hooked at one end into a recess in the first lever and hooked at the other end into a slot extending lengthwise of the second lever, so that the shif frame may be moved between case-positions with the ribbon-vibrator and the first lever without causing the link to operate eithcr lever, type-keys, a universal bar operable by the several type-keys, a rock-shaft to which the universal bar is connected, and an arm on the rock-shaft for engagement with the second lever to rock the latter and actuate the link upon operation of the type keys. 7 a
11. In a front-strike typewriting machine, a frame for the platen, means for shifting the platen-frame up and down between casepositions, a ribbon-vibrator on the case-shift frame, a lever on the case-shift frame movable in. a substantially vertical plane for operating the ribbon-vibrator, a second lever on the main frame of the machine movable crosswise with respect to the plane of movement of the first lever, a link extending lengthwise of the platen, hooked at one end into a recess in the first lever and hooked at the other end into a slot extending length wise of the second lever, so that the shiftframe may be moved between case-positions with the ribbon-vibrator and the first lever without causing the link to operate either lever, typekeys, a universal bar operable by the several type-keys, a rock-shaft to which the universal bar is connected, and an arm on the rock-shaft for engagement with the second lever to rock the latter and actuate the link upon operation of the typekeys; the second lever being a bell-crank lever, one arm of which is engaged, as aforesaid, by the link, and the other arm of which lies across the path of the arm on said rockshaft.
12. In a front-strike typewriting machine, a frame for the platen, means for shifting the platen-frame up and down between casepositions, a ribbon-vibrator on the case-shift frame, a lever on the case-shift frame movable in a substantially vertical plane for operating the ribbon-vibrator, a second lever on the main frame of the machine movable crosswise with respect to the plane of movement of the first lever, a link extending lengthwise of the platen, hooked at one end into a recess in the first lever and hooked at the other end into aslot extending lengthwise of the second lever, so that the shiftframe may be moved between case-positions with the ribbon-vibrator and the first lever without causing the link to operate either lever, type-keys, a universal bar operable by the several type-keys, a rock-shaft to which the universal bar is connected, and an arm on the rock-shaft, for engagement with the second lever to rock the latter and actuate the link upon operation of the type-keys; the second lever being a bell-crank lever, one arm of which is engaged, as aforesaid, by the link, and the other arm of which lies across the path of the arm on said rock-shaft and in front of the latter so as to be struck and rocked forward when a type-key is operated;
13. In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination of a platen and a platen-frame shiftable up and down to different case-positions, a vibratory ribboncarrier, a lever fulcrumed on the platenframe and connected to the ribbon-carrier, a key-actuated universal bar, a lever pivoted on the framework to swing from side to side and be vibrated by the universal bar, a link pivotally connecting the two levers, and key-actuated means to shift the link relatively to one lever to vary the throw of the ribbon-carrier from a uniform normal position.
14. In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination of a platen and a platen-frame shiftable up and down to clifferent case-positions, a vibratory ribbon-carrier, a vertically-disposed lever fulcrumed upon the platen-frame and connected to the ribbon-carrier, a key-actuateduniversal bar, a horizontally-disposed lever pivoted on the frame-work to swing from side to side and be vibrated by the universal bar, a link pivotally connecting the two levers, and keyactuated means to shift one end of the link relatively to one lever to increase or diminish the throw of the ribbon-carrier from a uniform normal position.
15. In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination of a platen and a platen-frame shiftable up and down to different case-positions, a vibratory ribbon-carrier, a bell-crank fulcrumed upon the platen frame and connected to the ribbon-carrier, a key-actuated universal bar, a bell-crank pivoted on the framework to swing from side to side and be vibrated by the universal bar, a link pivotally connecting the two bellc "anks,and key-actuated means to shift one end of the link relatively to one arm of one bell-crank to increase or diminish the throw erated by the universal bar, a. link pivotally.

link pivotally connected to one bell-crank and pivotally arranged within the slotted arm of the other boll-crank, and key-actuated means to shift the: link between two pre determined positions within the long slot to increase 1' diminish the throw of the ribboncarrier or shift the link to register with the clearance slot in the first mentioned arm to; prevent transmission from the arm to the link.

In a type writingmachine, having a framework, the combination of a platen and a platen-frame shift-able up and down to diiferent case-posi ions, a vibratory ribboncarrier, a bell-crank fulcrnn ed upon the platen-frame and connected to the ribboncarrier, a key-actuated universal bar, a bell crank pivoted on the framework comprising a slotted arm tofswing from side to sidev and a second arm to engage with a member of the universal bar, as spring to maintain engagement between the second arm and the member of tlieuniversalbar, alink pivotally connected to one bell-crank, and positioned within the slot of the other bell-crank, and key-actuated means to shiftthe link within the slot to raise the ribbon carrier and align a predetermined ribbon field to the printing position.
20. In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination of a platen and a platen-frame shiftable up and down to different:case-positions, vibratory ribboncarrier, a bell-crank fulcrumed upon the plater-frame and connected to the. ribbon:
carrier, a key-actuated universal bar, a bellcrank pivoted on the framework to swing from side to side and vibrated by: the universal bar, a link pivotally connecting the two bell-cranks, and a key having a part connected to said link perable'to shiftone end of the link relatively to one bell-crank to increase'ordiminishthe opera ive throw of the ribbon-carrier from a uniform'normal position.

In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination of a platen and a platen-frame shiftable up and down to different case-positions, a vibratory carrier for a two-color ribbon, a bell-crank f'ul crnmed upon the platen-frame and connected to the ribbon-carrier, a key actuated universal bar, abell-crank pivoted on the framework, a link pivotally connecting the two bell cranks, and means connected to the universal bar to uniformly vibrate one bellcrank in one direction to vibrate the ribboncarrier to either ribbon field and serve as a uniform stop for the bell-crank in a reverse direction to determine thesame normal inoperative position of the ribbon below the printing line for both ribbon-throw move ments.
22, In a typew-riting machine having a framework, the combination with a platen and a platen-frame shiftable up and down to different case-positions, ofa *ibratory ribbon-carrier, a lever fulcrumed on the platen-frame and connected to the ribboncarrier, akey-actuated universal bar, a lever pivoted on the framework and vibrated by the universal bar, and a link pivotally con necting the two lovers and operative to provide for a fine, close adjustment of the ribbon fields between a normal inoperative position below the line of print to the printing posit-ion of the types.

In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination witlra platen and a platen-frame shiftable up and down to different case-positions, of avibratory ribbon-carrier, a lever fulcrumed on the platen-frame and connected to the ribboncarrier, a key-actuated universal bar, a lever pivoted on the framework and vibrated by the universal bar, and a long link pivotally connecting the two levers and operative to vibrate with one lever during the case-shifting movements of the platen, and throw the ribbon-carrier for either field of the ribbon from a uniform normal stop position.
In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination with a platen and a platenfra1ne shiftable up and down to different case-positions, of a vibratory ribbon-carrier, a lever fulcrumed on the platen-frame and connected to the riboncarrier, a key-actuated universal bar, a lever pivoted on the framework and vibrated by the universal bar, an adjustable link connecting the two levers and variably settable relatively to one lever to vary the throw of the ribbon-carrier from a uniform normal inoperative position, and means for variably setting the link.
25. In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination with a platen and a platen-frame shiftable up and down to difierent case-positions, of a ribbon-vibrator having up and down movements relative to the platen, a bell-crank comprising an arm fulcrumed upon the shifting frame and connected to said vibrator to operate the same, said arm provided with a downwardly-extending operating arm, a link connected at one end to said downwardly-extending arm and extending longitudinally of the platen to vibrate idly at the shifting operations, an arm pivoted upon the framework of the machine to swing from side to side and con nected to said link, type-key-operated means to vibrate the last-mentioned arm, and a ribbon-shifting key having a part connected to the link to shift it relatively to the last-mentioned arm.
26. In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination with a platen and a platen-frame shiftable up and down to different case-positions, of a ribbon-carrier vibrating for up and down movement relative to the platen, a bell-crank comprising a horizontal arm fulcrumed upon the shifting frame and connected to said carrier and a vertically-disposed arm extending downwardly, a vibratory lever pivoted on the framework to swing at right angles to said bell-crank, a slot in said said lever, a link connected to the ell-crank and to the slot in the lever in such a manner as to vibrate idly at the case-shift positions, so as not to change a predetermined ribbon-throw movement at the printing position, keyoperated means to vibrate said lever, and a ribbon-shifting key having a part connected to the link to shift it relatively to the slot in the lever.
27. In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination with a platen and a platen-frame shiftable up and down to different case-positions, of a ribbon-carrier vibrating for up and down movement relative to the platen, a bell-crank comprising a horizontal arm fulcrumed upon the shifting frame and connected to said carrier and a vertically-disposed arm extending downwardly, a vibratory lever pivoted on the framework to swing at right angles to said bell-crank and having a long slot terminating in a short transverse slot adjacent the fulcrum thereof, a link connected to the bellcrank and to the slot in the lever in such a manner as to vibrate idly to the case-shift positions, so as not to change a predetermined ribbon-throw movement at the printing position, and a ribbon-shifting key having a part connected to the link to shift it to one of two positions within the'long slot to change the ribbon field at the printing position or to shift said link to a third position to register with the short transverse slot in said lever to prevent vibration of the link and silence the ribbon-carrier.
28. In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination of a shiftable platen and a platen-frame, an inverted bellcrank fulcrumed on the platen-frame, a ribbon-carrier vibrated by a horizontal arm of the bell-crank, a link connected to the other arm of the bell-crank and extending longitudinally of the platen to vibrate idly at the shifting operations, a bell-crank pivoted upon the framework of the machine to swing from side to side and connected to the link, a key-actuated universal bar to vibrate the last-mentioned bell-crank, and a ribbonshifting key having a part connected to the link to shift the link relatively to the lastmentioned bell-crank.
29. In a typewriting machine having a framework, the combination of a shiftable platen and a platen-frame, an inverted bellcrank fulcrumed upon the platen-frame, a ribbon-carrier vibrated by a horizontal arm of the bell-crank, a link connected to the other arm of the bell-crank and extending longitudinally of the platen to vibrate idly at the shifting positions, a bell-crank pivoted upon the framework of the machine to swing from side to side, having one arm formed with a slot within which the link is connected, a key-actuated universal bar to vibrate the last-mentioned bell-crank, and a ribbon-shifting key having a part connected to the link to shift the link relatively to the last-mentioned bell-crank and another part in registry with an index that determines the setting of the link relative to the slotted arm of the bell-crank.
