E. L. ANSON FOLDING DELIVERY BOX Filed June 1924 Z SheetSP-Sheet 2 ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 23, 1926.
EARL LEE ANSON, 0F WARRENSBURG, MISSOURI.
FOLDING DELIVERY BOX.
Application filed June 20,
This invention relates to foldable boxes and has for its primary object the provision of a foldable box that possesses great strength when in assembled position and is capable of being folded in an extremely compact form for storage purposes and the like.
A further object is to provide a foldable box where each part thereof is connected to its companion part with the result that none of the parts can be lost or misplaced.
Another object is to provide a foldable box that is extremely advantageous when used in the capacity of a. delivery box.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure l is a top plan view showing the respective parts of the box forming the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the box partially opened.
Figure 3 is a view of the box folded with the ends thereof shown open in dotted lines.
Figure 4 is a perspective detail view of one of the connecting means.
Figure 5 is a detail view of one of the bracing rods.
Referring to the drawings in detail the reference numeral 1 indicates the bottom which has secured to and rising from its end edges strips 2 for hingedly receiving the ends of the box 3. The ends 3 of the box are fixed to the strips 2 through the instrumentality of strap hinges 4 as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
Hingedly secured to one side edge of the bottom and which may be construed the rear side edge is one side 5 of the box which is also provided with strap hinges 6, while the opposite side edge 5 is secured to the opposite edge of the bottom through the 111- strumentality of similar strap hinges 6 and these last mentioned strap hinges are mortised into the side and the bottom respectively to allow the opposite side to restthereon when the box is arranged in folded position as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
edge of the rear side Serial No. 721.352.
The top of the box is indicated by the reference numeral 7 and is fixed to the upper 5 by connected members 8 and 9 which are in the nature of staples and provide a loose connection for the rear side and the top as suggested in Figure 2. The staples 8 are adapted to be driven in the rear side 5 while the staples 9 which are slightly modified from the construction of the staples 8 and are formed with penetrating points arranged at right angles to the arms thereof as shown in Figure 4, and these penetrating points are adapted to be driven in the top 7.
Secured to each of the ends 3 ranged in spaced relation are pairs of brace rods 10 provided with arms 11 which have their ends bent upon themselves as at 12 to be arranged in parallel with the body portion thereof. These ends 12 are adapted to be received in spaced apertured disk shaped catch members 10 which are disposed in the path of the ends and arranged on each of the sides 5 as su gested in Figure 3 of the drawings. By this structure it will be apparent that the sides and ends are held in substantial position when the box is assembled.
A bail 13 has its respective ends fixed to one of the sides 5 which may be construed as the front side and this bail is adapted to be utilized for arranging this side in an upright position when itis desired to assemble the box as will be readily apparent.
From the foregoing and the disclosure as presented by the drawings it will be apparent that the box which forms the subject matter of the invention is extremely rigid in its construction and possesses great strength when in assembled position, and is further capable of being folded in an extremely compact form as shown in Figure A box of this character is very useful for tie livery purposes as delivery boxes are subjected to great abuse. The foldable feature is also advantageous as they can be packed in delivery wagons to take up a minimum amount of space after the commodities which were previously contained therein have been delivered.
Arranged adjacent the upper ends of the sides 3 are recesses 13 which provide hand holds for handling the box as will be readily apparent.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
and ar- I desire'it to-be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall with in the scope of the appended claim.
That I claim is:
A foldable box of the character described strips rising from and comprising a bottom,
thereof, sides hingedly fixed to the end edges secured to-tli'eside edgesiof said bottom, a
top loosely secured by companion interlocked staples to one of said sides, and-together With said sides being mounted to be foldedon the bottonrin superposed relation thereWith, the staple for the top being formed with right angle disposed penetratingpoints to be driven into said top, ends hingedly secured to the inner upper edges ofsaid strips and adapted to be folded upon the sides and top, centrally apertured spaced disk shaped catches fixed to said sides, and substantially U-shaped brace bars fixed to said ends in parallelism and adapted to have theirends received in the catchesaWhen-the box is arranged in assembled position. v
