VALVE. f
This invention relates generally Ato valves, and more particularly to vthose known as plug valves wherein arotor isemployed to govern flow through them.,
The purpose` of the presentiimprovement is to provide in Connection with valves ofthe type referred to, means whereby theoperative or coordina-ting relation between the fixed .andinovable ports may be adjusted so that any desired degree of overlap or eclipse may be had between them suchas will be effective throughout theextent of valve moveinent, and whereby thegmaximum Vflow v ly .increasing numbers `with -the. discharge through the valves may be predetermined in adapting.themgtodiferent .conditions of use.
description hereinafterof a typical embodiment of my invention as illustrated by the accompanying drawings'whereof Fig. I is a plan view of the improved valve.
Fig. II is a side elevation of the sameas viewed from the bottom of Fig. I.
Fig. III is a vertical axial section of the valve.
Fig. IV is a diagrammatic view in linear development showing the. relation of the fixed and movable flow ports of the valve.
Figs. V to IX inclusive show'successive positions of the valve from complete closure to full opening.
In the embodiment illustrated, the valve casing designated 10 is cylindric in form and has an outlet 1 1 projecting laterally from one side thereof. A wall or diaphragm l2 extends across the inner end of the outlet 11, and is provided in the pre-sent instance with four discharge orifices 13 preferably arranged in square or diamond formation as shown in Figs. IV to IX. The wall or diaphragm 12 may be made integral with the casing 10, or, if the exigencies of manufacture should require, the same may be provided by employing a tubular insert such as shown at 14 in Fig. III which is made to fit snugly within the cylindric bore of the casing 10 and to rest uponv an annular ledge 15 within the latter. The upper end of the casing 1.0 is closed by a screw cap 16 arranged to clamp the tubular insert 14 against theI supporting ledge 15, said screw cap being characterized by an extended circumferential flange 17 useful in the manner to be hereinafter explained.
How thisY desidei-datum.may beg-'attained willbe readily-'apparent from the detailed t A diagrammatic lines 1-2-#3-4 in the last grouped'gas' tobe registrable' in progressiveorifices 13 as showniii F ige'.l VitoT IX iiiclu sive-when said. controlrmemberismoved in thedirectionl ofthe arrows, respectively in mentioned illustration are successively made to coincide with aline m on the part .14.
A stem 22, preferably integrally formed with the control member or rotor 18 extends tothe exterior of the valve casing 10 to-.afford attachment for an operating lever or handle 23. This handle 23 is equipped withv a depending spring-pressed pin 24 whose lower end is tapered so as to be capable, during operation of the valve, of riding into and out of depressions or apertures 1-23 4: in the top face of the circumferential flange 17 on the screw cap 16 of the valve casing 10, and yet to yieldingly maintain the control member 18 in successive shifted positions corresponding to coincidence of the lines 1-2-3-4 with the line m as previously explained in connection with Fig.
In order that the extent of overlap or eclipse between the`ports 2l and the discharge orifices 13 may be regulated to modify the range of flow throughout the extent of movement of the control member or rotor 18, as well as to predetermine the maximum flow through the valve, said control member or rotor is made axially shiftable by adjusting means in the form of a sleeve 25 that is independently rotatable on the .stem 22 and in screw threaded engagement within an axial opening 26 through the closure cap 16 of the valve casing 10. The protruding end of the sleeve 25 has a head 27 which is peripherally knurled or milled' as shown in Fig. II to facilitate its ready manipulation; and said sleeve 25 is held against axial Y movement on the stem 22 through abutment of its upper end With the boss of the con* trol handle 23, and Contact of its lowerend With the shouldered top of the control member or rotor l At the region of the contact just referred to, the rotor 18 is formed with an annular recess or groove of V-V shaped cross section and the contiguous end of the .sleeve 25 ris correspondingly accurate# ly configured t0 engage Sad gOQV'@ with a Wedge it, therebyto maintain a fluid tight joint to avoid possibility ottleakage from the valve.
Having thus Vdescribed my invention, I
claim:
1. A valvercomprising a casing having a discharge Vo'dianiond arranged orilices; and a control member rotatable in the casing, said member having staggered ports to govern graduated iiovv through the valve and capacity or axial adjustment to vary the centric registration of the ports relative to the casing orilices for the purpose 'oit modifying the range of flow through the valve.
2. A valve comprising a casing With dia mond arranged discharge orifices in the outlet thereof; and a movable control member and oritices'atore'said'may be varied to modilly the range or flow through the valve.
'3. A' valve comprising Vacasing with a discharge ot" diamond arranged oriiices in the outlet; a cylindric plug rotatable inthe casing and having staggered ports Which ford graduated 'Hou' through the valv said plug having a, stem and handle whereby it may be actuated; and a sl eve independently rotatable about the plug stem and in screw threaded engagement with the casin^,V
whereby the plug mayl be axially moved to vary the centric registration or' its ports relative to the casing oriiices iior thepurpcse of modifying the range of lioiv through the valve.
In testimony whereof,V I have herein'itol signed my name at Philadelphia, Pennsyl# vania,V this 17th dayof September 19211.Y
