MILK CAN Filed Sept. 29, 1924 Patented Nov. 23, 1926.
UNITED STATES e remesa PATENT OFFICE.
, DUNCAN J. FAHLMAN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO BUHL STAMPING COM- PANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
MILK` CAN.
Application filed September 29, 1924.v Serial No. 740,548.
l This invention relates to sheet-metal containers and relates particularly to milk cans and the like. v
In forming milk cans or other vessels re- 5 quiring frequent thorough cleaning it is highly desirable to avoid the presence of any interior crevices or recesses which may tend to retain dirt or food particles. AIn securing to the side wall of such a con- IU tainer its bottom or end wall, the resulting interior crevice at the joint has heretofore been filled with solder. The proper soldering of such joints requires skill and considerable time and is hencecomparatively ex I5 pensive.
It is the object of the present invention to apply a prefashioned filler member at the joint between the side and end walls of a sheet metal container and to thereby produce a smooth continuous interior surface less expensively than present methods permit. y
It is also an object to utilize such a filler member as a reinforcement for the end of the container to which it is applied.
A further object is to insure against any leakage of liquidspast the joint to which said filler member is applied.
These and various other objects the invention attains by the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l'is an axial sectional view of the bottom port-ion of a milk can or the like,
' disclosing one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing an alternative construction.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing still another embodiment of the invention.
In these views the reference character A designates the cylindrical side wall of a milk can orother sheet metal container, the bottom or end wall B of which is inserted some distance into said side wall and is formed with a marginal cylindrical flange C projecting toward the adjacent end of the container. The upper portion of ysaid flange is inwardly spaced from the wall A and its lower portion fits snugly within said wall, an annular shoulder C being formed between said upper and lower portions.
The space above the shoulder C is oc-k cupied by a metal ring D, prefashioned to accurately fill said space. The top face of height from the wall A. The ring said ring is beveled to conform to the ineline of the bottom B in case the latter is dished as shown by the drawing, andadjacent said facethe ring has an interior annular projection D', forming in effect a fillet the under face of which is rounded to snugly lit the bend resulting from the juncture. yof the bottom B and flange C. The ring D is rigidly connected both to the wall A and to the flange C by spot welding or in some other suitable manner.
While the, construction, as so far described, establishes a liquid seal, it is preferred to additionally safeguard the vessel against leakage by an interlock between the walls A and B. Thus the lower edge portion of the wall A is bent to a U-form, as indicated at E, snugly embracing the lower portion of the flange C. Preferably a metal band F is inserted in the lower yportion of the flange C, forming a reinforcement for the lower end of the vessel and assisting .in maintaining the described interlocking relation of the walls. As shown, the lower edge portion of the band F is outturned beneath the flange C so as to form a supporting base for the vessel. The band F the flange C, and the U portion E of the wall A are rigidly connected by spot welding or other suitable means.
VThe construction shown in Figure 2 corresponds to the' preceding description except for the use of a heavier reinforcing metal band G. yThis band is upwardly ex tended into proximity to the bottom B, its
inner face being of constant diameter and its outer facev having the annular shoulder G corresponding to the intermediate shoulder of the flange of the bottom, said band being relativelythick below the shoulder Gr.
The construction shown in Figure 3 employs `a ring H between the downturned flange I of the bottom of the container and the lower marginal portion of the side wall. In this construction, the flange I has no annular shoulder, being spaced throughout its corresponds to the describedring D except that it is substantially coextensive in height with the flange I, snugly filling the entire space vbetween the wall A and said flange, the latter being riveted to said ring and to the wall A as is indicated at J. Preferably the lower portion of the ring H is slightly thickened forming an exterior annular shoulder K, upon which the wall A seats at its lower edge.
It is characteristic oi' each of the described constructions that a smooth continuous surface is produced interiorly of the container at the joint between its side `and end walls at a reduced expense as compared to present methods, 'and that the container is strongly reinforced.
What l claim is:
l. A containei1 coniprising separate walls anda filler member 'fitted between said walls and pretashi'oned 'to :snugly fill thespace between said walls Vand having a face flush with one of said walls in'teriorly or" the container,
Athereby torniinga joint tree l'from crevices.
2. A. container comprising separate walls, one ot which 'is bent to overlap the other, :and a filler ineniber fitted between-said wallsand having a surface 'flush with the interior 'tace Yot said bent wall, a'ndhaving a pretashi'oned projection adjacent said surface rounded *to 'snugly 'contorni to the bend 'ot said wall.
A container compri-sing interlo'clred walls having' spaced portions adjacent 4their interlock, and n `liller ineinber'titt'ed between saidspaced portions and pretashioned to snugly till said spaceysaid member having' :a tace tlush with one ot said walls interiorly ot the container, thereby forini'ng a. joint tree Jtroni 'crevices il. A container compri-sing an `end wall and 'a lseparate side wall, the said walls having 4. side wall and a separate end wall `having` `a marginal dange interiorly spaced ltroni v'said side wall, and a filler ring iitted between and directly contacting 'with said flange and side wall, and having a Vtace interiorly flush with said end wall.
8. A container comprising` a cylindrical side wall 'and Yan end wall inserted within lsaid side wall and having .an out-turned 4flan-ge marginally interloclred `with said side wall, the inner portion lof said flange being spaced troni said side wall, and a liller ring "side w-all, -a separate end wall extending transversely lthereof provided with a transversely bent'tlange et'ent'lifnfg parallel 5to vsaid 'side wall andslightly spaced from the saine, and iilier lnen-iber inserted vbetween rsaid side .vfall and tlange preltas'hion'ed Ato Vsnugly AContact directly therewith forming a j'oin-t tree troni crevices.
ll. In a niilk can, v'the combination with 1a cj indrical body, of a separate bottom lthrerfefor having` a downturn-'ed cylindrical'flange ot adiaineter less than fthe iernal diameter of the body to 'leave ian annular l'space therebetween, and a liller strip between said 'flange and body, oil' a cross sectional contour to snugly lit about the bend between said botteni and 4flange .and'to also ii't the inner tace ot said body whereby Va'joint is providedtree from crevices 12. In la ini-lli can, the .combination with :a cylindrical body, of a separate sheet metal Vbottoni therefor, or" `concave y:torin having a downtnrned cylindrical 'flange forming a rounded -c-o-rner, vsaid :flange beinrr fof 'a dialneter slightly less than the `internal Vdiameter posed surface arranged flush with saidconcave bottom surface forming va 'continuation ot the saine.
-3. rllhe method ot torining mil-lr cans which consists in forming la cylindrical body and a separate sheet linetal bottoin therefor, having -a cylindrical flange ot a dianieter less than the internal'diameter ot'said body, inserting an annular filler'strip between said *flange and body, said strip being` ot-cross sectioi l contour to .tit vabout the bend of said cylindrical flange and forming `a joint tree trein crev-ic'es, and securing said lian-ge, `.body and `filler strip together in fixed relationship'.
