1,607,018 J. ROSENBLUM ENGINE CRANKING DEVICE Filed' March 6. 1923 l atented Nov. 16, 1926.
,UNETED stares JAMES ROSENBLUII, OF AMI'IE, LOUISIANA.
ENGINE-CRANKING DEVICE.
Application filed March 6, 1923. Serial 1\To.'623,18 6.
The invention relates to engine cranking devices, and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a bracket arching the engine drive shaft the forward end of a motor vehicle in which bracket a counter shaft is rotatably mounted. The counter shaft is provided with a large gear which meshes with a small gear carried by the engineshaft'and is also provided with a hand operated fly wheel and by means of which an engine may be cranked without danger of injury if the engine backfires. The hand operated fly wheel forms means for allowing momentum to the counter shaft in the driving'of the large gear, thereby insuring a quick and rapid rotation of the engine drive shaft.
A further object is to provide a gear drive for starting an engine, thereby reducing the amount of power necessary for starting the engine and insuring a rapid positive rotation of the engine shaft.
Viththe above and other ob ects in view theinvention resides in the combination claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figured is a front elevation of a portion of the forward end of an automobile showing the cranking device applied thereto.
Figure2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring to thedra-wing, the numeral 1 designates the radiator of a conventional form of automobile and 2 the spring receiving channel disposed beneath the radiator. Secured to the upper side of the channel 2 by means of U-bolts 3 are the.
arms 4c of an upwardly extending bracket 5 The arms l extend outwardly and upwardly and converge towards each other and terminate in an enlarged portion 6 having horizontally disposed bearing 7 therein.
Eotatably mounted in the bearing 7 is a horizontally disposed shaft 8 andsecuredf to said shaft 8 is a large drive gear-.9, which drive gear meshes with a small driven.
the said shaft is orovided with a hand 0 erated fly wheel 12, which when rotated adds momentum or" inertia to the drive gear 9. The operator grasps the rim of the wheel 12 and rot-ates the same and it will be seen that the wheel is smooth and consequently in case of backfire there is not-hing to come into engagement with the operators hands and cause injury.
From the above it will be seen that an engine cranking device is provided, which is simple in construction, the drive shaft is driven through gear connections thereby increasing the driving power and consequently insuring a rapid rotation of the engine shaft and one wherein it will be im possible for the operator to be injured on backfire of the engine. It will also be seen that the r Wheel h r yrotated will gain suiiicient momentum to insure a rapid and positive rotation of the engine shaft 11 through the gear connections 9 and 10.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed-as new and useful is The combination with a vehicle engine starting shaft, said shaft being disposed above a support, a radiator above said support, of a starting mechanism for said shaft,
said mechanismcomprising ajbracket can ried by the support and arching the shaft, said bracket being disposed forwardly of the support and radiator, a horizontally disposed shaft rotatably mountedin a bear- 1 ing in the upper end of the bracket,a gear carried by saidshaft, said-gear being disposed forwardly of the bracket, a gearcarried by the engine starting shaft and meshing with the. first mentioned gear, said last named gear being disposed forwardly of the'bracket, a hand operated fly wheel car-' ried by the'horizontal shaft, said fly wheel being disposed forwardly of the gear carried by the engine starting shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed my specification.
