CHECKER GAME.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in games and more particularly to the game of checkers. The mam object of the present invention is the pro-- vision of a metallic board having a checker board designated thereon with magnetized checkers used in playing the game whereby the device may be used on trains and the like and the magnetic action will prevent displacement of the checkers on the board and retain them in their proper positions during the playing of the game.

An object of my invention is the provis1on of a metallic checker board and playing pieces therefor wherein the playing pieces are provided with a magnetized member which is adapted to create magnetic action between the metal board and the magnetized members for retaining the playing members in their proper positions upon the board regardless of the position of the board but at the same time permit the playing members to be readily moved about by the hand while playin the game.

Another 0 ject of my invention 1s the provision of a checker game wherein the playing members are provided with sultable means to prevent lateral movement relatlve to each otherwhen they are placed in superposed relation which is known during the playing of the game as crownmg.

With the above and other objects in v1ew, my invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawmgs, in which:

Carrying out my invention I rovide a base member 1 preferably of thin sheet metal having the playing field 2 marked thereon as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings which conforms to the regulation game of checkers.

The playing members, generally indicated by the numeral 3, each comprise a disk like body member 4 one face of which is provided with an annular recess 5 and arranged within this recess is a plastic material 6 in which a magnetic member 7 is embedded. The magnetic member 7 comprises a split ring, the ends of which are arranged in spaced relation and rovide a negative pole 8 and a positive p0 e 9 to create magnetic action for causing the playing members to be retained in their relative positions with respect to the squares of the playing field 2 regardless of the position of the board.

The split rings 7 are arranged in the plastic material 6 when the same is in a semi-plastic condition and after the plastic material hardens the rings 7 will be securely retained in position. It will be apparent from the view shown in Fig. 2 that the outer edge of the ring 7 and the plastic material 6 is disposed flush with the lower surface of each playing member so that the playing members may be readily moved over the board. It is preferred to have the split ring 7 sufficiently magnetized, prior to embedding the same within the plastic material 2.

In order to prevent lateral movement of the playing members relative to each other when it is desired to arrange one of the playing members above the other or in crowning position as shown in Fig. 2 the upper face of each playing member is provided with a stud 10 arranged centrally of the playing member and the lower face thereof provided with a cavity 11 adapted to receive the stud 10 when the players are in superposed relation as shown in Fig. 2, this means retaining the players in crowning position. Both the stud 10 and recess 11 1n each player is arranged centrally thereof so that when one player is arranged above the other they will be disposed in vertical alignment.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided an inexpensive game board for use. in playing the well-known game of checkers which may be utilized on trains or in other places where there is a tendency of the main playing board being moved to an inclined or tilting position which, if there is no means for retaining the playing members against movement relative to the board, will result in confusion of the playing members u on the board. It will be apparent that w ile the magnetic action between the split rings 7 and the board provides means for retaining the playing members against normal relative movement, the playing members may be readily moved over the surface of the playin field b parties playing the ame.

ile I ave shown and descri ed the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the'appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim 1s:

1. A game of the class described including disk like playing members each having an annular recess in one face thereof, plastic material arranged within said recess, a magnetized member embedded within said plastic material and means whereby to prevent lat eral movement of the members relative to each other when arranged in superposed relation.

2. A checker including a bod definin an annular recess formed in one o the sur aces thereof, a plastic material filling said recess, and a magnetized split ring embedded in the plastic material with an edge portion thereof exposed and disposed flush with said one of the surfaces, the ends of said split ring being in spaced relation with respect to each other.
