UNITED STATES Y 1,605,156 PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. BAKER, OF SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA.
BOOKIIOLDER.
Application filed April 12,
The present invention relates to a book holder and the like and has for its principal object to provide means whereby a book or the like may be supported in a convenient position to the read for example when a perton :is seated in a chair, in a bed or like de vice. The device .is also useful in numerous analogous situations and paper or the like could be substituted for a bookl so that the device might be used as a desk.
Other important objects of the invention is to provide a holder of this nature -which simple, efficient, durable, attractive in ap` pearance, inexpensive to n'ianufacture, easily operated, reliable, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other obs jects in view as will appear asthe description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the. drawing- Figure 1 is a top plan of the book holder,
Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof,
Figure 4 is a detail view in side elevation of the upper portion of the holder,
Figure 5 is a detail perspective of the hinge used with the device showing the ele ments thereof disassembled,
' Figure 6 is a detail perspective of a portion of the bracket, and
Figure 7 is a detail perspective of the clip used with the holder. f
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the holder proper includes a pair of panel leaves 1 which are hinged together for supporting a book or the like. The lower edges of these panel leaves are provided with a supporting flange 2 disposed substantially at right angles to the bodies of the leaves. The strips 3 are constructed with' curved bodies that overhang the upper edges of the panel leaves 1 and are xed to the rear faces thereof by means of screws 4 or the like passing through the transverse projections 5. The hinges for the leaves 1 each include a pair of leaves 6 suitably pivoted to each other and fixed -to the panel leaves 1. These hingev leaves 6 are pivoted to a bracket 7. A beam 8 supports two of the brackets 7 one at each end thereof. A bolt 9 projects from the upper end of the beam 8 and receives the slotted ends of a pair of rods 1923. Serial No. 631,706.
10 which are pivoted to the upper edges of the panel leaves l and a thumb nut 11 is disposed on the bolt 9 so that the angular relation which is desired between the panel leaves 1 may be Avaried and held stationary as desired.
A bracket arm 12 is preferably constructed of hollow piping and bent intermediate its ends at right angles so as to be substantially L-shaped. The formation, however, of this bracket arm may be varied to suit circumstances. One end of this bracket arm has a bolt 13 projecting therefrom and pierces an intermediate portion of the beam 8 so as to be lixed thereto by a nut 14 or other suitable means. 'l he other end of the bracket arm 12 is supported by a clamp. This clamp is indicated generally at 15 and includes a horse-` shoe shaped body 16 having a block projec tion 17 extending from an intermediate portion on its convex face.y This block projection 17 is provided with a pair of openings 18 disposed at right angles to each other for receiving the bracket arm 12 whereby this arm may be extended in different directions from the clamp as may be desired. A thumb screw 19 holds the bracket arm 12 securely in either of the apertures 18. In use the body 16 is disposed about an arm of a chair or some other similar portion thereof or some of a movable jaw 2O actuated by ashank 21 piercing one leg of the body 16 and the other leg thereof acts as a fixed jaw.
If desired the rods 10 may be duplicated on the lower edges of the panel leaves 1 as I have illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. The device allows of a plurality of adjustments and therefore may be disposed to support a book or the like in a convenient position for use on most any kind of a device such as a chair, pedestal, bed, etc. I have, in the'present instance, shown and described only the preferred embodiment of the invention which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, and it' is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is In a book support, the combination with a bracket, a substantially vertically arranged beam carried by one end of the bracket, hinges carried by the beam adjacent its op- `other device and is secured thereto by means posite ends, and a pair of panel leaves arpanel leaves and having their opposite conranged in advance of the beam and attached tacting ends provided with longitudinal to the said hinges, of' ineans for adjusting slots, and adjusting elements carried by the 10 the angles of the said ypanel leaves7 said opposite ends of the beam and passing -f means comprising; a pair of contacting conthrough the said slots.
