POWER MACHINE WITI-I IIELICALLY-CURVED BLADES TO FORM CORRESPONDING-LY- SHAPED COMPARTMENTS.
Application filed. October 17, 1923, Serial No. 669,126, and in Austria November 21, 1922'.
This invention relates to a power machine with helically curved blades to form correspondingly shaped compartments, the said blades being rigidly secured to the shaft of the machine and also to the casing in which the blades are disposed.
According to the invention the essential features of the power machine consists in that the casing is reduced or tapered in the manner of a bottle or flask in the direction of flow of the driving medium (water under pressure), so that also the radial depth of the compartments is diminished towards the neck of the bottle-shaped casing.
One mode of carrying out the present invention is illustrated diagrannnatically. and by way of example on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Fig. 1 shows a power machine in longitudinal section, and F ig. 2 a bottom view of the same.
I-Ielically curved blades 2 are rigidly connected to the vertical shaft 1 of the machine, the bottom edge 2 of each blade extending straight and radially towards the centre -of the shaft 1 (Fig. 1). Compartments 3 are formed between the blades 2, which are enclosed at the outside by a casing 4 rigidly connected with the outer edges of the blades. According to the invention the casing 4 is reduced or tapered in the direction of the flow of the driving medium in such a manner, that its shape will substantially correspond to the shape of a bottle or flask. Therefore also the radial depth of the blades 2 and of the compartments formed between them is gradually diminished. The casing 4 is mounted freely rotatable on a ring or annular member 6, which is immovably secured to a base-plate 5, and a ring 7 secured to the ring 6 will prevent the casing 4 from being lifted off the last mentioned ring. The latter is furnished with an opening 01' port 8 through which the driving medium may pass from a supply pipe 9 into the casing.
The driving medium, for instance water under pressure, passes through the supply pipe 9 and the opening 8 into the hollow space of the ring 6 and subsequently passes into the compartments 8 of the machine. Owing to its kinetic energy the water rises along the helically curved faces of the blades 2 and thereby rotates the casing 4 and the shaft 1. The kinetic energy of the water is reduced in accordance with its extent of rising in the casing. Therefore the machine is of such construction, that the depth of the blades is reduced in the direction of How of the driving medium and the casing is reduced or tapered in the manner of a bottle or flash. Owing to this mode of forming the case 4 the water will be at a higher pressure in the upwardly narrowing passages and its flow will be at a correspondingly higher rate before it leaves the same through the opening 10, and the consequence thereof is an increased supply of power by the water to the rotating shaft. In view of the progressively increasing velocity of flow in the bottleshaped casing the effect of the same will be obvious without any further explanation.
I claim- 1. A power machine actuated by a driving medium, for instance water under pressure, comprising in combination, a freely rotatable casing which is upwardly tapered in the manner of a bottle in the direction of flow of the driving medium, a shaft passing through the said casing, and helically curved blades within the casing, the said blades be ing rigidly secured to the said shaft and casing to form correspondingly shaped compartments whose radial depth and whose width is diminished towards the neck of the bottle-shaped casing and means to admit a driving medium at the lower side of the easing, said casing having an outlet opening at its upper end.
2. A power machine actuated by a driving medium, for instance water under pressure, comprising in combination, a fixed base-plate, an annular member provided with an admission-port for the driving medium secured to the base plate, a casing open at the bottom and top ends attached freely rotatable to the said annular member, the said casing being tapered in the manner of bottle in the direction of flow of the driving of the bottle-shaped casing and means to ad medium, a shaft passing through the casing, mit a driving medium at the lower side of j and helically curved blades Within the casthe casing, said casing having an outlet open- 10 ing, the said blades being rigidly secured to ing at its upper end. 5 the said shaft and casing to form some In testimony whereof he has aflixed his spondingly shaped compartments whose rasignature. dial depth is diminished towards the neck ALOIS HEIBL.
