" RING CLAMP.
"Application filed January a0, 1926. se ria'l 1\'l'o., 82,541.
This invention relatesto improvement in clamps for use uponpistons in compressing nately arranged cutout portions provided in.
. the piston ring within the -grooves defined therein to permit the insertion of the pistons and rings within cylinders.
Another object of my invention resldes in the specific construction of the clamp being relatively wide and split having one end of a relatively narrow strip 'plvotally secured adjacent one end. thereof" and -ex-.
tending across its opposite andv adjacent end and including an elongated slot-with alterits adjacent side edges for selective engagement with the headedstud provided on the clamp for compressing and locking the rings precedent to their insertion, with the piston, within a cylinder bore. e I
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes thefollowing novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a piston with my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2' is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the piston with the invention applied thereto when inserted within a cylinder.
Referring to the corresponding parts the reference character 10 indicates a pistonand 11;a plurality of piston rings fitted .within the, usual .grooves defined therein, all of the above being'of the usual and well known construction and forming nopart of the-present applicationfor Letters Patentbut being merely shown for. purposes of illustrat ng 1n bringing forward the" novel advantages of the above entitled invention.
a relatively wide and thin] split metallic clamp or band such as indicated atv 12 hav ing one end of a relatively narrow strip .7
13 "pivotally mounted as indicated at 14 adjacent one end andextending 'a ma or portion of its length along and against the opposite end of the band or clamp, as clear- .ly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing.
A relatively narrow band 13 "further includes anelongated slot 15 therein with a plurality of alternately arranged cutout each successive ring as the latter .within the cylinderbore 18.
drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote and in direct-alignment with a horizontal plan. with respect to the relatively narrow band Bend the elongated slot 15 provided therein.
portions 16 within its opposite. side edges 'foreselectivereception-'of a headed stud 17 er in mounted. po he ou e side, o t corresponding end of the clamp or band- 10 Inthe use and operation of the present invention it is clearly apparent and manifest that upon the partial insertion of the piston 10 within the .cylinderbore having walls 18 of a block 19 and upon applicationof the band or clamp12 upon the rings.
11 of the piston 10 in'compressing said rings cumference with the cylinder bore 18, as
11 to correspond with the diameter and circlearly illustrated in Figure 30f the draw-- ing that the piston 10 with the rings 11 mounted thereon may b6 readily and easily pushed downwardly within the cylinder bore 18; the lower edges of the band or clamp 12 engaging, the upper marginal r edges of, the cylinder bore 18 of the block 19 and exerting: the desired pressure against is forced I It is further to be noted that the inven- 'tion maybe applied equally and effectually as well upon pistons having rings adjacent "their lower ends and automobiles having large bearing boxes will pe-rmitthe said pistons to be shoved and fitted within their 7 cylinder below and obliterate the necessity of removing the cylinder head of the motor in accomplishing the result of inserting therefor. v p "The Invention. 1S- susceptible of various changes in its form,-proportions and minor properly fall within'the scopeofithe ap- The invention resides in theprovision of pended claims. v i 1 Havmg thus descr bed the invention, what is claimed 1s:
pivotally'mounted adjacent one end of the band and having its opposite end extending across the opposite end thereof, and means the pistons and rings withinthe cylinders I 1. A clamp forv use upon rings and pistons provided upon the opposite end of the relatively wide band for locking the relatively narrow band in a desired position upon the first mentioned band to compress the rings upon the piston.
2 A clamp for use upon rings and pistons therefor comprising a relatively Wide circumferentially split band a relatively narrow arcuate-shaped band having one end pivotally mounted adjacent one end of the first mentioned band and having its opposite end extending the major portion of its length across the opposed end of the relatively Wide band, the relatively narrow band including an elongated slot therein With-outout portions disposed in staggered relation Within its opposite side edges, and a. headed stud mounted upon the outer side of the corresponding end of the relatively Wide band and adapted for selective engagement within any one of a plurality of the cutout portions in the relatively narrow band for compressing the rings to permit the piston and rings therefor to be readily and easily fitted Within the bore of the cylinder block.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature.
