This invention relates to a device in the nature of a pincers, or tongs, and while the device capable of different uses, it part1 J is designed as a clinker removing 'ce for removing clinker-s from fire boxes furnaces.
As is well known, clinkers are usually formed from the fuel in domestic furnaces, and their removal is frequently necessary. It is a dfficult and awkward task to remove clinkers with a straight poker or with a plain hook which is ordinarily provided about the furnace. I
it an object of this invention to provide an extremely simple but eflicient derice, by means of .which the clinkers can readily be engaged and removed.
It is afurther object of the invention to provide a clinker removing device having one jaw formed as a substantially straight bar which can also be used as a poker.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of the device, certain of the parts being indicated in different positions in dotted lines;

Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, the device comprises a bar 4 and while this bar may be variously formed, it preferably and in the embodiment of the invention illustrated is formed a plain square bar. The bar 4 at its outer end 4 is somewhat curved and pointed to form one jaw of the device. At its other or inner end the bar 4 has a portion 4' bent laterally and as illustrated, subst tially at right angles, the portion 4 b g provided with an aperture adjacent its enc Another member 5 illustrated as made from a flat bar, is pivoted to the bar 4 somewhat adjacent the end of said member and said member curved so as to have its concave side toward the jaw 4 and said member also has its outer end bent laterally a short distance as shown at 5. The bars 4 and 5 are connected by the headed and nutted pivot bolt 6. The inner end of the member 5 is disposed between the portions 7 of the bifurcated or forked end of a rod 7 and pivotally connected thereto by the headed and nutted bolt 8. The rod 7, which in the embodiment of the invention illustrated is shown as a round r.od, extends rear wardly and through the aperture in the portion 4 of the bar 4. The rod 7 carries a handle 9 at its outer end beyond portion 4 and while this handle may be variously formed and shaped, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated it is shown as an ordinary grip handle. secured to the rod 7 by the pin 10. r v
In operation the device will be manipulated by the operator grasping the bar 4 adjacent the portion 4 with the right hand and grasping the handle 9 with the left hand. The rod 7 can thus be reciprocated by the handle 9 to move the aw 5 toward and from the jaw 4. The jaw 4 will be disposed at one side of the clinker and the jaw 5 closed thereon. The clinker can then be easily and quickly removed from the furnace. The handle 9 is arranged to contact the outer side of the portion 4 as a stop and when in this position, the bar 4 can be used as a poker to break up lumps of coal or clinkers or for similar use, by merely holding the handle 9 against the portion 4 and reciprocating the bar 4 and the rest of the device bodily.
From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided an extremely simple and efficient clinker removing implement. The device comprises very few parts which can be easily and inexpensively made and assembled. The device has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and found to be very successful and efficient.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the novel parts and combination of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. A clinker removing device having in combination, a fixed comprising a bar having longitudinally extending portion bent and formed with an aperture at one end and slightly curved to form a clinker engaging portion at its other end, a movable jaw formed of one integral bar pivoted to said bar and having an outer end'curved to co-operate with said fixed jaw, an operating rod pivoted to the inner end of said movable jaw passing through and slidable in said aperture, and a handle on said rodebeyond said aperture for operating said movable jaw and adapted to engage said fixed jaw to form a stop with said jaws separated whereby said fixed jaw can be used as a poker.
2. A clinker removing device comprising a bar rectilinear throughout the gr ater portion of its length and constituting one portion of a clinker engaging means at its outer end, said bar having a portion extending laterally at its other end, having an aperture therein, a curved bar pivoted to said first mentioned bar adjacent its outer end and constituting a movable jaw, a rod pivotally connected to the inner end of said last mentioned bar and passing through said aperture, said rod carrying an operating handle at its inner end adapted to engage the outer side of said laterally extending portion of said first mentioned bar when the jaws are in substantially wide open position, whereby the first mentioned bar can be used as a poker.
3. A clinker removing device having in combination, a substantially square bar rectilinear throughout the greater portion of its length and curved and tapered slightly atits outer end to constitute a fixed jaw,
said bar having a portion extending laterally substantially at right angles at its inner end and provided with an aperture, a curved member formed of a flat bar pivoted adjacent its end against the side of said first mentioned bar and having its outer end bent laterally substantially at right angles for a short distance and constituting a movable jaw, said last mentioned bar being pivotally connected at its inner end to the forked end of a round rod, said round rod extending through said aperture and carrying a handle at its outer end adapted to engage the outer side of said laterally extending portion of said first mentioned bar.
4;. A clinker removing device having in combination a bar, rectangular in cross section, constituting a fixed jaw, and being straight throughout the greater portion of its length, said bar being bent at right angles at one end and formed with an aperture and being slightly bent at its other end to form the jaw portion, a movable jaw formed of a fiat bar pivoted to one side of said bar forming said fixed jaw and having an outer end adapted to aline with and cooperate with said fixed jaw to engage the clinkers, around operating rod pivoted to the inner end of said movable jaw passing through and slidable in said aperture in said first mentioned bar and a handle on said rod beyond said aperture for operating said movable jaw and adapted to contact said bar torn'iing the fixed jaw.
